A Doppler broadening positron annihilation technique for the study of defects in bulk samples

    No full text
A Doppler broadening positron annihilation technique which allows for the study of near surface defects in bulk samples is described. The method is capable of observing changes in the homogeneous bulk defect concentration in a sample acid is also able to characterize spatially localized near-surface defects in bulk materials with a resolution of about 1 mm. The applicability of this method is demonstrated by measurements on a sample of polycrystalline aluminum into which defects have been introduced by mechanical deformation. Isochronal annealing studies have been used to characterize the defect recovery in this material and are compared with results of conventional Doppler broadening measurements.PT: J; CR: BOURASSA RR, 1976, J PHYS F MET PHYS, V6, P1405 BRAUER G, 1987, PHYS STATUS SOLIDI A, V102, P79 CAMPBELL JL, 1977, APPL PHYS, V13, P365 DUNLAP RA, 1988, CAN J PHYS, V66, P476 DUNLAP RA, 1992, NONDESTRUCTIVE COMPU HUTCHINGS MT, 1995, J PHYS IV, V5, P119 LAWTHER DW, 1990, J PHYS-CONDENS MAT, V2, P6239 LAWTHER DW, 1993, KEY ENG MATER, V81, P95 LAWTHER DW, 1993, UNPUB CAN J PHYS MACKENZIE IK, 1967, PHYS REV LETT, V19, P946 MACKENZIE IK, 1970, PHYS LETT A, V33, P279 MACKENZIE IK, 1993, COMMUNICATION MCKEE BTA, 1967, THESIS TALHOUSIE U SCHULTZ PJ, 1981, CAN J PHYS, V59, P325 SMITH FA, 1977, R8894 AERE WAMPLER WR, 1978, J PHYS F MET PHYS, V8, L1; NR: 16; TC: 0; J9: NUCL INSTRUM METH PHYS RES B; PG: 4; GA: TY120Source type: Electronic(1

Frances Ellen Colenso, 1849-1887 : her life and times in relation to the Victorian stereotype of the middle class English woman

    No full text
Includes bibliographical referencesThe stereotype of the Victorian middle class woman, which generally characterised her as a passive, ornamental, helpless and dependent creature, has been one of the most popular caricatures of the nineteenth century. Recent research into this hitherto largely ignored social class has begun to re-adjust this image. The stereotyped distressed gentlewoman who emigrated to Australia and New Zealand for instance has recently been critically examined, but so far the female emigrant and settler in colonial South Africa has been ignored. It is only since the early 1970s that academic research into feminism began to appear. The influence of the women's liberation movement and of the increasing interest in social history, while stimulating research into Victorian women in England and her colonies, has only penetrated historical research within South Africa in the last decade

Compliance with Prehospital Triage Protocols for Major Trauma Patients

    No full text
Background: The extent to which severely injured patients receive definitive care at trauma centers is determined by the accuracy of prehospital major trauma criteria in predicting severe injuries and by the level of compliance with these triage instructions by prehospital providers. This study was conducted to evaluate the level of compliance with triage criteria in an established trauma system. Methods: The study involved a retrospective analysis of the 1995 Maryland statewide prehospital ambulance data. Prehospital providers in Maryland are instructed to consider transporting patients meeting any of the three nonexclusive major trauma criteria-physiology, injury, and mechanism-to designated trauma centers. Compliance with these criteria was defined as the proportion of patients transported to designated trauma centers among those meeting prehospital triage criteria as documented on the ambulance trip report. Special emphasis was placed on differences in the levels of compliance by age of the trauma patients. Results: A total of 32,950 transports were analyzed. Patients meeting injury. criteria were most likely to be transported to trauma centers (86%), followed by those meeting mechanism criteria (46%), and physiology criteria (34%). When the level of compliance was stratified by age, there was no age difference in the level of compliance for patients meeting injury criteria (90.5% for patients aged 0-54 Sears vs. 88.7 % for patients aged 55+ years; p = 0.197 ), For older patients meeting physiology criteria only or for those meeting mechanism criteria only, however, compliance was differentially ion. For patients meeting physiology criteria only, the compliance was 40. 3% for patients aged 0 to 54 years and 23.9% for patients aged 55 years and older (p = 0. 0001); for patients meeting mechanism criteria only, compliance was 47.0% for patients aged 0 to 54 years and 39. 7% for patients aged 55+ years (p = 0.002). Conclusion: The majority of patients meeting prehospital major trauma criteria were transported to designated trauma centers. Patients meeting only physiology criteria, however, were much less likely to be transported to trauma centers, and there was a differentially low compliance for elderly trauma patients meeting physiology criteria alone. The causes and consequences of lower compliance with triage instructions for the elderly population deserve further investigation

Cholecalciferol as an alternative toxin for the control of bait-shy possums in the Mackenzie Basin

    No full text
The objective of this trial was to assess the effectiveness of cholecalciferol as a toxin for control of free-ranging, bait-shy possums in the MacKenzie Basin. A field trial was undertaken between January and March 1993 to evaluate the use of the toxin cholecalciferol for control of possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) in the MacKenzie Basin. The work was done in an area containing possums that exhibited bait-shy behaviour towards standard sodium monofluoroacetate (1080) baits. The trial was undertaken by staff from Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research, Christchurch, with assistance from the senior author of this report
