Lana Bastašić, born in Zagreb in 1986, grown in Banja Luka (Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina), schooled in Belgrade where she graduated, published in 2018 the novel Uhvati zeca (Kontrast publisher, Belgrade). The novel soon becomes a huge success in the Western Balkan area so as to reach three more editions (2019, 2021 and 2022) in Sarajevo/Zagreb and one in Slovenia (2021). In 2020 the novel was awarded the European Prize for Literature and in 2021 the Premio Latisana per il Nord-Est, which she shared with her Italian translator, Elisa Copetti. After that, in 2021 the book gets published in the United States of America by editor Restless Books (New York) in the author’s own self-translation. The aim of this research is to extrapolate and analyze a series of translation examples in order to determine the applied strategies and the deviations from the original text caused by the author/translator’s hybrid-self. The investigation will also take into consideration the awarded Italian translation and compare the solutions, focusing especially on the transposition of culturally specific elements that this novel is abundant with, given the fact that it mostly takes place in Bosnia and Herzegovina before and after the war in the ‘90s. The research objective is to find out how the author handles her role as a translator, how many and what kind of authorial liberties does she allow herself within the rigor of translation and with what results, if compared to the Italian translation

Pulmonary Embolism Presenting with Pulmonary Infarction: Update and Practical Review of Literature Data

    No full text
Pulmonary infarction (PI) is a possible consequence of pulmonary embolism (PE). The real incidence of PI could be underestimated considering only non-fatal PE presentation. However, following postmortem examination, the prevalence of PI is considerably higher. This evidence suggests the necessity of proper diagnostic protocol for identifying PI. Unfortunately, PI diagnosis can sometimes be challenging, due to the overlapping of symptoms with other diseases. Nowadays, the diagnosis is mainly based on radiological evaluation, although the combination with emerging imaging techniques such as ultrasound and nuclear scanning might improve the diagnostic algorithm for PI. This review aims to summarize the available data on the prevalence of PI, the main predisposing factors for the development of PI among patients with PE, to resume the possible diagnostic tools, and finally the clinical and prognostic implications

Exploring an On-Chip Sensor to Detect Unique Faults in RRAMs

Memristive devices have become promising candidates to complement and/or replace the CMOS technology, due to their CMOS manufacturing process compatibility, zero standby power consumption, high scalability, as well as their capability to implement high-density memories and new computing paradigms. Despite these advantages, memristive devices are also susceptible to manufacturing defects that may cause different faulty behaviors not observed in CMOS technology, significantly increasing the manufacturing test complexity. This work proposes a Design-for-Testability (DfT) strategy based on the introduction of a on-chip sensor that measures the current consumption of Resistive Random Access Memories (RRAMs) cells to provide the detection of unique faults. The new On-Chip Sensor (ON_CS) was validated using a case study 3×3 RRAM cell array with peripheral circuitry implemented based on a 130 nm Predictive Technology Model (PTM) library. Experimental results show that the proposed DfT strategy is able to detect not only traditional faults, but also unique faults that can affect RRAM cells. Finally, this paper proposes an DfT strategy that can detect unique faults with an unique operation and can be used during the normal operation of a RRAM.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Quantum & Computer Engineerin

The success in endodontic therapy in deciduous teeth is related to the knowledge of variations in the internal anatomy of the canals. This study aims to analyze the anatomy of root canals of deciduous molars using computed microtomography (micro-CT). This laboratory study involved 40 roots of upper and lower deciduous molars without the crown and with their roots sectioned, being 23 buccal e 17 palatines, 17 mesials and 3 distals . After scanning the samples, the NRecon®, CTan®, CTvol® and Blender® programs were used for quantitative and qualitative analyses. The canal with the longest mean length was the mesiobuccal and the one with the longest length was the distal one. The anatomical position of the foramen mostly coincides with the apex, both in upper and lower molars. The palatine root was shown to have a smaller dentin thickness at 1mm and 2 mm from the apex. The distal root has a smaller dentin thickness at 1 mm from the foramen. The mesial root proved to be the most thick .The upper molar canals were more angled than the lower ones. Being the buccal root more angled than the palatine. In order to perform endodontic treatment effectively and safely, it is necessary to know the internal anatomy of the canals

Strong evidence of sexual dimorphic effect of adiposity excess on insulin sensitivity

    No full text
Aims: Our aims were to investigate in several large samples, with a wide range of adiposity, whether: (1) the effect of BMI on insulin sensitivity is different between sexes; (2) also waist circumference plays a sex-specific role on insulin sensitivity; and (3) serum adiponectin and resistin are mediators of such sex-dimorphic effect. Methods: Samples used were: Gargano study 1 (GS1), GS2 and Catania study (CS) comprising 3274 individuals. Adiponectin and resistin were measured by ELISA. Associations between variables were tested by linear models. Results: In all samples, relationship between BMI and HOMAIR was steeper in males than in females (BMI-by-sex interaction p = 0.04–0.0007). No interaction was observed on serum adiponectin and resistin (p = 0.40–059), which are therefore unlikely to mediate the sex-dimorphic effect of BMI on insulin resistance. Relationship between waist circumference and HOMAIR was similar between sexes in GS1 and GS2 but not in CS (waist-by-sex interaction p = 0.01), comprising much heavier individuals. This suggests that a sex-dimorphic effect of abdominal adiposity on insulin resistance is observable only in the context of high BMI. Conclusions: Our findings represent a proof of concept that BMI and insulin sensitivity are associated in a sex-specific manner. This may explain why females are protected from diabetes and cardiovascular disease, compared to males of similar BMI

Characterization and Test of Intermittent Over RESET in RRAMs

Resistive Random Access Memories (RRAMs) are being commercialized with significant investment from several semiconductor companies. In order to provide efficient and high-quality test solutions to push high-volume production, a comprehensive understanding of manufacturing defects is significantly required. This paper identifies and characterizes the over-RESET phenomenon based on silicon measurements. In our case study, 30% cycles suffered from intermittent extremely high resistance state exceeding the high resistance state criteria. The paper shows the limitations of conventional defect modeling based on linear resistors. To address this challenge, the Device-Aware (DA) defect modeling method is applied; a model of the defective RRAM device is developed and calibrated using measurements to accurately describe the impact of the defect on the electrical behavior of the memory device. Afterward, fault analysis is performed based on the DA defect model, and appropriate fault models are introduced; they show that the DA defect model will sensitize deep (extremely high resistance) state faults. Finally, dedicated test solutions for over-RESET devices are proposed.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Computer Engineerin

Torsion and anomalies in the warped limit of Lifschitz theories

    No full text
We describe the physics of fermionic Lifschitz theories once the anisotropic scaling exponent is made arbitrarily small. In this limit the system acquires an enhanced (Carrollian) boost symmetry. We show, both through the explicit computation of the path integral Jacobian and through the solution of the Wess-Zumino consistency conditions, that the translation symmetry in the anisotropic direction becomes anomalous. This turns out to be a mixed anomaly between boosts and translations. In a Newton-Cartan formulation of the space-time geometry such anomaly is sourced by torsion. We use these results to give an effective field theory description of the anomalous transport coefficients, which were originally computed through Kubo formulas in [1]. Along the way we provide a link with warped CFTsThis work is supported by FPA2015-65480-P and by the Spanish Research Agency (Agencia Estatal de Investigación) through the grant IFT Centro de Excelencia Severo Ochoa SEV2016-0597. A Memoir of Jane Austen is the first biography of that famous author. It was published in 1870 by her nephew James Edward Austen-Leigh. Due to his position as her relative, as a gentleman and as a man of his time, there is nothing inappropriate or indelicate in his book, which was very well received at the time. This book forged the image of Jane Austen as a pleasant, calm and affable lady who writes light and innocuous novels. This idea persisted for almost two hundred years, and even today there are those who subscribe that. Since then, other biographers, literary critics, writers and researchers have studied Austen’s life and work, and new facts and perspectives been opened on the subject. The aim of this monograph is to investigate the intentions and the motivations that led James Edward Austen-Leigh to write this first biography; the role played by this book in the creation of the public image of the author; and the way it influenced the course of Austen’s critical fortune. The work is divided in two sections. The first, about biography as a genre, considers the different aspects of the process of turning a person’s life into fiction. The second examines the way this process is triggered in A Memoir of Jane Austen. I rely on Benito Bisso Schmidt (2014) and Nigel Hamilton for the theoretical support about biographies. For the contrast with recent biographies I go to Deirdre Le Faye (2002) and Janet Todd (2006). And I count on the qualified critical material we have about the author, especially in the area of gender studies. This research is meant as my contribution to the studies regarding Jane Austen's life and image, especially the ones that explore the connections between author and subject and consider the context of production and the writer's motivations

As técnicas narrativas de William Wordsworth em The Prelude

The Prelude (1850), by the English poet William Wordsworth, is considered the first autobiography in verse written in the language, however, it is more than this. In its composition, it mixes the lyric and epic genres, the philosophical essay and the spiritual autobiography. Its generic plurality, thus, naturally evokes special structural questions, which we intend to explore in this essay through the perspective of narratology. Thus, we take the categories of analysis of Wayne C. Booth (1961) in order to investigate the agreements, deviations, and particularities of the Prelude’s narrative in relation to formal expectations. We proceed by sections where we explore the narratologic categories of: 1) person; 2) narrator, author, and character; 3) scene, summary, and commentary; 4) variation of distance. We concluded that each of the categories explored raises particular question in the work, specially the interaction between author, narrator, protagonist, and implied author, four distinct and independent functions that, in an autobiographical work as The Prelude, answer to the same name as the historical author, and whose relation is even more complexified in a work of such generic diversity. Adrenalectomy Improves Blood Pressure and Metabolic Control in Patients With Possible Autonomous Cortisol Secretion: Results of a RCT

    No full text
OBJECTIVE: The best approach to patients with adrenal incidentaloma (AI) and possible autonomous cortisol secretion (PACS) is debated. The aim of this study was to assess the metabolic effect of adrenalectomy in AI patients with PACS in relation to cortisol secretion parameters, peripheral activation, and glucocorticoid sensitivity. DESIGN: This is a multicenter randomized study (NCT number: NCT04860180). METHODS: Sixty-two AI outpatients (40–75 years) with AI >1 cm and cortisol after overnight dexamethasone suppression test (F-1mgDST) between 50 and 138 nmol/L were randomized to adrenalectomy (Arm A) or a conservative approach (Arm B). Fifty-five patients completed the 6-month follow-up, 25 patients in Arm A (17 female patients, aged 62.5 ± 10.4 years) and 30 patients in Arm B (24 female patients, 66.1 ± 9.1 years). Plasma adrenocorticotroph hormone (ACTH), 24-h urinary free cortisol, 24-h urinary free cortisone, F-1mgDST, glucose, lipids, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, blood pressure (BP), body weight, and treatment variations were assessed. The 24-h urinary free cortisol/cortisone ratio (an 11-beta hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 activity marker), BclI, and the N363S variants of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) polymorphisms were also evaluated. RESULTS: BP control improved in 68% and 13% of the subjects in Arm A and Arm B, respectively (p = 0.001), and the glycometabolic control improved in 28% and 3.3% of the subjects in Arm A and Arm B patients, respectively (p = 0.02). Arm A subjects more rarely showed the BP and/or glycometabolic control worsening than Arm B patients (12% and 40%, respectively, p = 0.03). The surgical approach was independently associated with BP amelioration (OR 3.0, 95% CI 3.8–108.3, p < 0.001) but not with age, F-1mgDST levels, BMI, and hypertension and diabetes mellitus presence at baseline. The 24-h urinary free cortisol/cortisone ratio and the presence of sensitizing GR polymorphisms were not associated with the surgical outcome. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed that the BP control amelioration was associated with F-1mgDST [area under the curve (AUC), 0.82 ± 0.09 p = 0.012]. The F-1mgDST cutoff with the best compromise in predicting the BP amelioration was set at 75 nmol/L (sensitivity 77%, specificity 75%). CONCLUSIONS: AI patients with PACS benefit from surgery in terms of BP and glycometabolic control
