    No full text
The American Wind Symphony Orchestra (AWSO) commissioned over 400 works from 1957 to 2019 under the direction of Robert Austin Boudreau with the C. F. Peters Corporation publishing about 200 works. In 2022, Boudreau donated the AWSO works to the University of Maryland Bands and were cataloged by the author of this dissertation with the assistance of Jeffrey Renshaw’s book The American Wind Symphony Commissioning Project: A Descriptive Catalog of Published Editions, 1957-1991 which catalogs 159 works. Discoveries were made to include 255 AWSO works not included in Renshaw’s book. This dissertation is divided into three parts. The first (Chapters 1 and 2) focuses on the history of AWSO, its commissioning project and general programming practices, funding and operations, and the key individuals who created and developed the ensemble over its 62-year history. The second part (Chapter 3) catalogs 255 AWSO works listing the instrumentation, important musical characteristics, program notes, and research resources. It is also intended to act as a supplement to Renshaw’s book for wind band and orchestra conductors searching for wind repertoire. The third part (Chapters 4-6) examines the potential limitations and marketability of the AWSO works as well as future research

Histoire et Historicité, Intertextualité et Réception dans Louis Mailloux (1975) de Calixte Duguay et Jules Boudreau

In 1975, two Acadians, Calixte Duguay and Jules Boudreau, in order to commemorate the centenary of the Revolt of Caraquet, presented Louis Mailloux, an historical drama which was received with much acclaim and which was to return regularly to the stage. As with all historical fiction, this play implicitly proposes an interpretation of the gaps inherent in the recounting of events of history. The author of this paper does, however, point out therein an essential intertextuality with other nineteenth-century French-Canadian texts contemporaneous with the action of the play. In analyzing these texts, he elaborates a theory which permits him to determine how their structure allowed the Acadian playwrights to impose an original historical philosophy on their theatrical work. Contrary to what the title may suggest, this philosophy has less to do with the simple creation of a national hero than with the concept of a collective one.

    No full text
The author examines the complex relations between space, language discrimination and language minorisation processes that are the basis for social hierarchies and inequalities between Francophones in Canada. The author shows how bilingual Francophones from peripheral regions whose language practices are characterized by the mixing of French and English in some songs and slogans are often used as scapegoats by the Center (especially the media) to show how the French language is threatened throughout the country. Considered illegitimate by those who cling to the ideology of the standard, some Francophones often internalize these negative discourses and perceive them as natural, therefore reducing themselves to silence when in contact with speakers from the Centre in order to escape being judged because of their mixed practices. Others, however, mostly from the artistic sphere, put forward different strategies in order to defy these hegemonic views, and, for example, purposely showcase stigmatized practices. These processes will be discussed in light of examples taken from L’Acadie

What influence did the electroacoustic music of Karlheinz Stockhausen have on musical production in this genre in Quebec? Various Quebec composers of different generations were asked this question: Kevin Austin (1948), Walter Boudreau (1947), Yves Daoust (1946), Jean-François Denis (1960), Marcelle Deschênes (1939), Francis Dhomont (1926), Gisèle Ricard (1944), Stéphane Roy (1959), Alain Thibault (1956). Enforcing the Charter: The Supervisory Role of Superior Courts and the Responsibility of Legislatures for Remedial Systems

    No full text
In this paper, the author examines the implications of the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision in Doucet-Boudreau v. Nova Scotia (Minister of Education) on a superior court’s jurisdiction to supervise government compliance with remedial orders in constitutional litigation. Drawing parallels between constitutionally-based judicial supervision and the traditional remedies judges exercise in equity, the author argues that the former is a natural extension of the latter types of equitable remedies and that the apparent stark division between the majority and minority decisions in the Supreme Court can be more readily explained by procedural preferences and the degree of deference each would afford the governmental decision-making body

Libidinal life : Bram Stoker, homosocial desire and the Stokerian biographical project

    No full text
This paper offers an examination of the Stokerian biographical project and shows how many biographies of Bram Stoker are invested in uncovering the elusive relationship between this little-known author and the actor Henry Irving. An exploration of Stokerian biographies reveals how Stoker has been constructed as a man who experienced same-sex desire, as revealed through his own "autobiographical" texts, such as Personal Reminiscences of Henry Irving and Dracula. Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick's concept of "homosocial desire" provides a useful theoretical framework within which to explore a sample selection of Stokerian biographies, including those of Daniel Farson, Phyllis A. Roth, Barbara Belford and Paul Murray. This paper maintains that the theories surrounding Stoker's libidinal life are generally well-grounded, yet to this day several questions remain unanswered. For many biographers, the life of the author of Dracula continues to be shrouded in mystery. This paper offers an examination of the Stokerian biographical project and shows how many biographies of Bram Stoker are invested in uncovering the elusive relationship between this little-known author and the actor Henry Irving. smcq : faire durer le présent

It’s been 50 years now since the smcq began presenting “today’s music,” and voices have been complaining about the representativeness of its programs since almost as long. Looking at some of the critiques made against smcq through the years and meeting with Walter Boudreau, its current artistic director, the author shows that The Times They Are a-Changin’ indeed. There are many more contemporary music ensembles now than back then, while the number of composers has exploded. So it’s become vital to preserve a repertoire that did not exist before while also making way for new voices. Looking at smcq’s 51st season program, we can see how Boudreau manages to meet this challenge
