Abstract: Palliative Care as an aid model which involves the threshold of finitude of life, although not restricted to the last days of life requires much more than technological resources, requires reflection and ethical position favoring a process of dying with dignity. And to favor the process of dying with dignity, the practice of palliative sedation has been characterized as an important resource for orthothanasia. Therefore, the ethical conflicts faced by the professional staff, the daily actions of palliative care, have a major presence in decision-taking about the use (or not) of palliative sedation to relieve the suffering of the sick person at the end of a life process; particularly in the relation between palliative sedation and euthanasia since the boundaries between the practices have narrow limits. Faced with this problem, the study aimed to understand the overall process of discussion and decision on the practice of palliative sedation in assistance to people in advanced stages of oncology disease and in final stages of life, in the Palliative Care Oncology department at a Southern Brazil Hospital. This is a descriptive exploratory qualitative study whose data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews with ten professionals within the health care team: nurses, doctors, nursing staff, social workers, psychologists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, nutritionists and occupational therapist. Data were organized using the qualitative data analysis software Atlas.ti 7.1.5. The analytical process revealed two themes that are discussed in this essay: meanings attributed to palliative sedation, values involved and the process of decision taking. The results indicate that the practice of palliative sedation requires a thorough analysis of the clinical facts and values involved in the decision-taking process with a constant ethical reflection on the part of the multidisciplinary team, as well as the consideration and respect for the values of the sick person and their families. In other words, in order to take a prudent decision, it is necessary a process of Moral Deliberation that, in its turn, is in constant developing and learning process by the interviewed health professionals, because among ethical considerations, the principles are not seen as absolute and also considering the values, analyze the circutamstances and consequences that permeate the decisions. Thus, bioethics states the process of decision making of palliative sedation at a new level, being one of the conductors of the practices of health professionals in cancer palliative care

First-Principles Density Limit Scaling in Tokamaks Based on Edge Turbulent Transport and Implications for ITER
A first-principles scaling law, based on turbulent transport considerations, and a multimachine database of density limit discharges from the ASDEX Upgrade, JET, and TCV tokamaks, show that the increase of the boundary turbulent transport with the plasma collisionality sets the maximum density achievable in tokamaks. This scaling law shows a strong dependence on the heating power, therefore predicting for ITER a significantly larger safety margin than the Greenwald empirical scaling [Greenwald et al., Nucl. Fusion, 28, 2199 (1988)NUFUAU0029-551510.1088/0029-5515/28/12/009] in case of unintentional high-to-low confinement transition

Heterogeneous and tissue-specific regulation of effector T cell responses by IFN-gamma during Plasmodium berghei ANKA infection.
IFN-γ and T cells are both required for the development of experimental cerebral malaria during Plasmodium berghei ANKA infection. Surprisingly, however, the role of IFN-γ in shaping the effector CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cell response during this infection has not been examined in detail. To address this, we have compared the effector T cell responses in wild-type and IFN-γ(-/-) mice during P. berghei ANKA infection. The expansion of splenic CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells during P. berghei ANKA infection was unaffected by the absence of IFN-γ, but the contraction phase of the T cell response was significantly attenuated. Splenic T cell activation and effector function were essentially normal in IFN-γ(-/-) mice; however, the migration to, and accumulation of, effector CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells in the lung, liver, and brain was altered in IFN-γ(-/-) mice. Interestingly, activation and accumulation of T cells in various nonlymphoid organs was differently affected by lack of IFN-γ, suggesting that IFN-γ influences T cell effector function to varying levels in different anatomical locations. Importantly, control of splenic T cell numbers during P. berghei ANKA infection depended on active IFN-γ-dependent environmental signals--leading to T cell apoptosis--rather than upon intrinsic alterations in T cell programming. To our knowledge, this is the first study to fully investigate the role of IFN-γ in modulating T cell function during P. berghei ANKA infection and reveals that IFN-γ is required for efficient contraction of the pool of activated T cells
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
