Archaeology and Hydrogeology in Sicily: Solunt and Tindari
This contribution concerns the relationship between the hydrogeological and archaeological characteristics of Solunt and Tindari (North Sicily), within the framework of the Watertraces project. The two cities face the Tyrrhenian Sea, on the northern coast of Sicily, are characterised by a relatively recent urban history compared to other Greek or Phoenician cities, being founded in the 4th century BC. The Hellenistic-Roman city of Solunt was moved from the promontory of Solanto to Mount Catalfano after the devastation of the first in 397 BC. The new position of the habitat offered advantageous defensive conditions and allowed it to control a vast territory, from the Gulf of Palermo to the Gulf of Termini and the hinterland. The steep slopes of Mount Catalfano did not prevent the inhabitants realising a regular urban network. Considering the hydrogeological characteristics of the mountain, the rise of hydrothermal waters along fracking planes led to the formation of small surges which were used by the inhabitants and whose waters were collected through tanks and basins. In this way, the city could benefit from a double supply of water: precipitation and natural rises.
Tindari is also located on a cliff overlooking the sea. The site was founded at the beginning of the 4th century BC. The city soon became an important commercial centre due to its advantageous geographical location. As for Solunt, the orographic features provided an important natural defence of the site, reinforced by powerful ramparts embracing the contour lines. The discovery of travertine formations close to a cistern underlines, as in Solunt, the importance of the hydrogeological context, here characterised by karst exes whose waters served the city and more probably the public area.
In Solunt and Tindari, the hydrothermal and karstic springs are now dry. This could be related to a seismic event described in the ancient sources. We know in fact that the city of Tindari was shaken by several earthquakes during its history. One of them is reported to us by Pliny and dates back to the 1st century BC. Another one would have caused several devastations in the city during the late period. Ongoing analyses at the archaeological, geomorphological, hydrogeological and palaeosimological levels, coupled with geochronology and isotopic water geochemistry, little by little, we discover the history of the water supply and management of these two key cities of the Hellenistic-Roman Sicilian world

What is the current state of the lithic complexes that are the marae of Bora Bora in comparison with the very brief description of some of them more than a century ago and what new knowledge can we provide? This is the purpose of this work on 5 marae studied with 3 objectives: 1. To describe with precision the lithic assemblage and specify the nature of the stones, standing or not, that constitute them - 2. To establish the origin of the coral stones that make up these structures and to try to determine the time of construction of these complexes – 3. To emphasize the risks that the marae along the coast run in the face of the projected rise in sea level, which made it urgent to describe them accurately before their destruction.Quel est l’état actuel des ensembles lithiques que sont les marae de Bora Bora en comparaison de la description très sommaire de quelques-uns d’entre eux il y a plus d’un siècle et quelles connaissances nouvelles pouvons-nous apporter. Tel est l’objet de ce travail sur 5 marae étudiés avec 3 objectifs : 1. Décrire avec précision les alignements lithiques et préciser la nature des pierres dressées ou non qui les constituent - 2. Limitations to U/Th dating of reef-platform carbonate boulders produced by high-energy marine inundations in the Tuamotu Archipelago (French Polynesia)
International audienceOn intertropical coastlines, coral boulders located on the reef platform are often used to characterize high-energy marine inundations of the past. Precise U/Th coral dating provides opportunities to assess the timing and recurrence of these events. However, this method of dating is subject to several limitations, as revealed by studying live coral cover at five islands in French Polynesia, since the early 1990s. We show that live coral assemblages experience very different changes within the islands of the same archipelago. Moreover, our observations show that the passage of a cyclone causes almost complete disappearance of the most recent coral in the coral boulder formation zone. This analysis shows that the probability of taking coral samples that were alive on the day of the high-energy marine inundation is extremely low. We have clarified the limitations of this method based on the dating of coral assumed to be alive on the day of the well-documented high-energy marine inundation of 1903 AD. The dating of 24 samples taken from 22 boulders from 3 islands of the Tuamotu Archipelago shows that important parts of the coral were dead when displaced by the marine inundations, thereby overestimating the timing of the disturbance event. As such, U/Th coral dating has limited application for establishing the precise timing for high-energy marine inundations with a return period of less than a century, but may be useful for exploring infrequent and extreme events such as the cyclone that ravaged the Tuamotu atolls in 1903. Indeed, we observed that this cyclone is the one that produced the world’s largest reef-platform coral boulders (more than 100 m³). We also provide evidence of an earlier event in the center of the Tuamotu Archipelago, during the middle of the first century AD
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
