The Absence and Influence of Genesis 48 (the Blessing of Ephraim and Manasseh) in the Book of Jubilees

While scholars have acknowledged the literary dependence of Jubilees 31 (the blessing of Levi and Judah) on Genesis 48 (the blessing of Ephraim and Manasseh), little work has been done to understand the purpose of this intentional intertextuality. This article examines the literary influence of Genesis 48, the effect of its absence, and the altered roles of Levi, Judah, and Joseph in Jubilees in order to determine why the author made the literary decision to pattern one scene of blessing after the other. This article suggests that the author's decision to omit Genesis 48 and to present not one but two similar scenes of blessing in its place is part of a larger strategy to negotiate the interpretive problem of the prominent status given to Joseph's sons in Genesis 48. By replacing Ephraim and Manasseh with Levi and Judah, but allowing Joseph to receive the double portion of land, the author of Jubilees reflects an interpretive tradition, also found in the Targums, Genesis Rabbah, and the Testaments of the Patriarchs, that understands the inheritance of Jacob to be threefold and distributed three ways—the birthright to Joseph, the priesthood to Levi, and the kingship to Judah. </jats:p

This audio recording features a church service at Central United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. The service proceedings include songs, followed by a prayer, and musical selections by the church's choral ensemble . At 00:33:00, Joseph E. Lowery gives a sermon about the art of infanticipating, which he defines as preparing for the blessing of a child to be born, and metaphorically compares it to preparing for a blessed event. Lowery provides the three ways of preparing for a spiritual experience and blessing by 1) Watching your diet by finding balance, thinking healthy, and being loving and grateful. 2) Exercising through prayer, worship, and service. 3) Creating a layette to wear the armor of God, love, and light through the darkness. The recording ends with Lowery leading the choir in singing songs. Audio cuts out from 00:45:21 to 00:45:31, then becomes low.The Atlanta University Center Robert W. The Participation of Homosexual Persons in the Liturgical Life of the Church: The Doctrinal Guidelines of Joseph Ratzinger and the New Pastoral Proposals of Pope Francis The author of the article presents the evolution of pastoral care for homosexual persons in light of the Church's most recent documents, with particular attention to their participation in liturgical life. The doctrinal foundations of pastoral care for homosexual individuals were formulated by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger in the 1986 letter of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Homosexualitatis problema. A new shape of this pastoral care is proposed by Pope Francis in the 2023 declaration Fiducia supplicans. A comparative analysis of these and other documents leads to the conclusion that, although the Church's position on the phenomenon of homosexuality has not changed, a more open pastoral approach towards homosexual individuals has been developed. This approach ensures greater participation in the liturgical life through the introduction of the possibility of blessing homosexual couples within the context of popular piety. The explanation of the form, meaning, and purpose of this blessing helps to better understand Pope Francis' pedagogical intuition, which does not conflict with the teachings of Joseph Ratzinger but rather develops them in the pastoral field. Keywords: liturgy, sacramentals, blessings, popular piety, liturgical life, pastoral care, homosexuality, blessing of homosexual couples, Joseph Ratzinger, Pope Francis, Fiducia supplicans.

Do high and volatile levels of public investment suggest misconduct ? the role of institutional quality

No full text
This paper investigates the impact of institutional quality on public investment levels over the period 1984-2008. Moreover, it studies how the volatility of public investment and the quality of infrastructure are affected by institutional quality, and explores the contribution of other critical factors. The findings suggest an inverse relationship between public investment levels and institutional quality, supporting the idea that governments use public investment as a vehicle for rent-seeking or to compensate for the fall in private investment due to the poor business environment. In addition, aid flows, revenues and abundance of natural resources contribute positively to the level of capital spending. The author also finds that high volatility of public investment is associated with a lower quality of governance. An increase in revenues is associated with a reduction in the volatility of capital spending, suggesting that proper macroeconomic management smoothes the investment cycle. Finally, the paper provides some tentative evidence of a positive relationship between institutional quality and the quality of infrastructure.Investment and Investment Climate,Debt Markets,Non Bank Financial Institutions,Public Sector Economics,Emerging Markets

Historia Józefa — „podręcznikiem" wychowania młodego Izraelity

The narrative of Genesis 37.39-50 abouth Joseph and his brothers has been the subject of many recent scholarly publications. The author reviews the va: rious opinions without expressing his own views regarding the particular theses and then concentrates on the question of the didactic nature of the story, quite independent of its literary genre. The point is whether it is indeed possible to read the story of Joseph as to some degree a reflection of Israelite didactic educational ideas and to what extent that could affect the interpretation of the text. Of the many views on the literary classification of the narrative the one which regards the story as a true historical account cast in the form of a novel or novelette seems to the author to be the most correct. The religious message of the narrative is enhanced, in the author\u27s opinion, by certain special qualities: the function of the sound structure of the name „Joseph", the role of religious "motifs (Joseph\u27s faithfulness to Yahweh, Yahweh\u27s blessing on Joseph\u27s undertakings, Joseph\u27s a bili ty to see the intention of God in human dreams and to recognize the hand of God in the many mysterious events experienced by himself and his hrothers), and same psychological aspects. An analysis of these qualities enables the author to say that the story of Joseph additionally functions as a didactic „manual" which teaches about the necessity and the method of acquiring wisdom; its religious message is that man\u27s highest value lies in leaving, God freedom to exercise His mysterious and sovereign control over our lives.

The Riddle of the Modern World: Of Liberty, Wealth and Equality. By Alan Macfarlane. New York: Palgrave, 2000. Pp. xiii, 326. $65.00.

Alan Macfarlane is a distinguished British social anthropologist, celebrated for giving that discipline an historical turn. He is the author of important books claiming that the English had become individualist in familial matters as much as in economic life in the late Middle Ages. This view had the mixed blessing of an endorsement by Sir Keith Joseph, the intellectual powerhouse of early Thatcherism, thereby making Macfarlane a decidedly controversial figure. The present book draws on these early views, but is very much the product of sustained interaction with the thought of the late Ernest Gellner (who spent most of the last years of his life at Cambridge chairing the department in which Macfarlane teaches). What we are offered in this book then is a summary of a particular line of argument, drawing on philosophy and anthropology, which speaks to the interests of economic historians in a slightly abstract but decidedly high-powered manner. The presupposition of the whole is stated in the title, albeit that the riddle is in fact twofold. One riddle is the blocking of sustained development: given human ingenuity and obvious early development, why was it that most agrarian civilizations eventually hit some sort of ceiling? The second conundrum then concerns the fundamental breakthrough to capitalist and industrial modernity.
