Research Slices: Core Processes for Effective Iteration in EDeR
Full text linkEducational Design Research (EDeR) methodologists argue that iteration is a core component of EDeR. Iteration is currently defined as a process of gathering more information through actions, such as testing, and using that information to improve the design. In this paper, we seek to tighten the definition of iteration to help EDeR teams conduct iterations more effectively. We argue that EDeR teams should organize their research in slices that deliver small but real value to end users while informing the design research. EDeR should pick slices that are: (a) minimal and focused, (b) deployed in a real context, (c) valuable to the end users, and (d) informative to the research. Slicing helps EDeR teams increase ecological validity when they test because it allows testing which is within real-world educational contexts or with the stakeholders who will use and be impacted by the design. Increasing ecological validity of testing is particularly important because EDeR projects tackle highly complex real-world problems with many unknown elements and relational complexity—this means it is challenging to predict what designs will have the desired impact without real-world deployment. Effective iteration through organizing research in slices helps EDeR teams to better support stakeholder goals, develop more impactful theory, and have greater and earlier impact upon education

Full text linkGradbena jama je začasen objekt, ki ga po končani gradnji zasujemo. Gradbena jama mora biti izkopana pravilno in kakovostno, v nasprotnem primeru se lahko sesuje oz. poškoduje, kar podaljša čas in poveča stroške gradenj. Ker pomeni izkop za določen objekt vedno poseg v zemljino v različnih globinah, je potrebno takšne izkope oz. gradbene jame ustrezno varovati pred porušitvijo.
V geotehnični praksi se najpogosteje uporabljajo racionalne kombinacije podpornih konstrukcij s sistemskimi sidranji, brizganim cementnim betonom, uvrtanimi tirnicami, sidranimi berlinskimi stenami ter mnoge druge. Pri tem so za opredelitev zahtevnosti podpornih konstrukcij zelo pomembni geotehnični pogoji, ki izhajajo iz mehanskih lastnosti tal, vplivov talne in precejajoče se vode, občutljivosti tal na spremembe napetostnih in deformacijskih stanj v tleh ter predvsem potencialna ogroženost objektov in okolja v vplivnem območju podpornih konstrukcij.The construction pit is a temporary facility, which after construction work is finished is filled in. The construction pit must be excavated properly and according to standards of quality, contrary to this it can collapse or cause damage, which increases the time of construction as well as work costs. Because excavation for defined buildings always involves intervention into the soil at various depths it is necessary that such excavations or construction of pits respectively be suitably protected prior to demolition.
In geotechnical practice a rational combination of support constructions with systematic anchoring, cement spray concrete, bored rails, anchored Berlin walls are most frequently used, along with many others. For determination of the complexity of support structures the geotechnical conditions are of great importance, and arise from the mechanical properties of the ground, the impact of underground and filtered water, ground sensitivity to changes caused by stress and the state of ground deformity and above all the potential threat to buildings and the surroundings in the impact area of support construction

MeSH term explosion and author rank improve expert recommendations
Full text linkInformation overload is an often-cited phenomenon that reduces the productivity, efficiency and efficacy of scientists. One challenge for scientists is to find appropriate collaborators in their research. The literature describes various solutions to the problem of expertise location, but most current approaches do not appear to be very suitable for expert recommendations in biomedical research. In this study, we present the development and initial evaluation of a vector space model-based algorithm to calculate researcher similarity using four inputs: 1) MeSH terms of publications; 2) MeSH terms and author rank; 3) exploded MeSH terms; and 4) exploded MeSH terms and author rank. We developed and evaluated the algorithm using a data set of 17,525 authors and their 22,542 papers. On average, our algorithms correctly predicted 2.5 of the top 5/10 coauthors of individual scientists. Exploded MeSH and author rank outperformed all other algorithms in accuracy, followed closely by MeSH and author rank. Our results show that the accuracy of MeSH term-based matching can be enhanced with other metadata such as author rank
