More than just a book repository, the new library at École Polytechnique de Montréal can be better described as a hotbed of intellectual activity. The library was specifically designed to foster learning, encourage research, facilitate collaboration and stimulate new ideas through its combination of technology, information, science and culture. From spatial planning to equipment to furnishings, everything was designed around the idea of an “intellectual forum.” This article presents the process by which the idea became reality

The laser wakefield acceleration experiment at Ecole Polytechnique
International audienceA laser wakefield electron acceleration experiment has been set-up at Ecole Polytechnique. An electron beam with 3 MeV total energy is injected in a plasma wave generated by laser wakefield using the new LULI CPA laser (400 fs [FWHM], I<1017 W/cm2). The first results show an effective acceleration of the order of 1 MeV, with a maximum when the electron density is close to the optimum value for which the laser pulse length is about half the plasma wavelengt

In dedicated experiments, plasma formation, plasma wave generation and saturation, and particle acceleration were successively studied and understood in detail. A maximum energy gain of 1.3 MeV was obtained, which is compatible with an accelerating gradient of 0.7 GV/m
