Auteur et éditeur au prisme de contraintes et d’affinités : Pierre-Henri Simon, le roman et les Éditions du Seuil
No full textAuteurs et éditeurs sont pris dans un jeu de contraintes multiples qui régit les conditions de possibilité de la création littéraire tout autant que la mise à disposition des œuvres aux différents publics. Selon les ressources dont ils disposent (sociales, culturelles, politiques, financières...), retraduites par les logiques propres des champs de production culturelle de leur époque, ils construisent la réception de leur production. Le cas du compagnonnage de Pierre-Henri Simon, écrivain d’inspiration traditionnelle, avec les Éditions du Seuil, jeune maison émergente aux lendemains de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, montre les inflexions d’une relation dont les intérêts ne peuvent toujours converger. Les romans du romancier-essayiste catholique, apparemment en phase avec l’identité engagée et religieuse de son éditeur, ne trouvent pas la reconnaissance souhaitée. L’éditeur, par le biais de son directeur littéraire Paul Flamand, infléchit, en partie sous contrainte, la ligne éditoriale de son catalogue, qu’il souhaite voir s’ouvrir vers des recherches esthétiques et des publics qui l’éloignent de l’ancrage catholique des origines de la maison. Des archives inédites et l’analyse des trajectoires biographiques de Pierre-Henri Simon et des caractéristiques du Seuil permettent de retracer le processus de construction d’une certaine forme d’obsolescence esthétique.Authors and publishers face numerous challenges when in comes to literary creation as well as the distribution of the works. With the resources available, be they social, cultural, political or financial, both author and publisher conceive ways to launch the work. The case of the association between Pierre-Henri Simon, an author who found inspiration in traditional subjects, and the Éditions du Seuil, a publishing company created shortly after the Second World War, makes it clear that the interests of one do not always converge with the interests of the other. The novels of the catholic essayist, seemingly appealed to the religious views of the publisher, did not always receive the recognition initially sought. The publisher and its literary director Paul Flamand, were unconvinced, partly because of the editorial policy, and wanted to widen its scope to include aesthetic works that would appeal to a readership that was moving away from Catholicism. With the help of archival material and biographies of Pierre-Henri Simon, the author charts the progression of a certain form of aesthetic obsolescence.Autores y editores se ven atrapados por un juego de múltiples tensiones que rige las condiciones de la creación literaria, así como la disponibilidad de las obras para distintos públicos. En función de los recursos disponibles (sociales, culturales, políticos, financieros), que vuelven a ser traducidos por la lógica propia de los campos de producción cultural de su época, elaboran la recepción de su producción. El caso de la asociación de Pierre-Henri Simon, escritor de inspiración tradicional, con la editorial Seuil, que surgió en las postrimerías de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, refleja las inflexiones de una relación en la que los intereses no siempre convergen. Las novelas de este novelista y ensayista católico, que aparentemente coinciden con la identidad comprometida y religiosa de su editor, no obtienen el reconocimiento deseado. El editor, influenciado por su director literario, Paul Flamand, desvía, en parte bajo presión, la línea editorial de su catálogo, que desea ampliar hacia la búsqueda estética y hacia un público que lo aleje del catolicismo original de la editorial. Gracias a una serie de archivos inéditos y al análisis de las trayectorias biográficas de Pierre-Henri Simon y de las características de Seuil, es posible seguir el proceso de construcción de una determinada forma de obsolescencia estética
