No full textDissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas, Programa de Pós-graduação em História, Florianópolis, 2013Em Florianópolis, a primeira Sociedade de Regatas organizada, meados do século XIX, contaria com a participação dos Coronéis da Marinha e da Escola de Menores e Marinheiros da Canhoneira. Na virada do século, a fundação do Clube 29 de Abril permitiria que as atividades relacionadas ao Remo fossem oferecidas a todos que se associassem ao Clube. No entanto, somente entre os anos de 1915 e 1918, com a fundação dos Clubes Náuticos Riachuelo e Martinelli e o Clube de Regatas Aldo Luz, é que o Remo adquiriria sua característica de prática física salutar ao homem. Entre as transformações urbanas que ocorriam em Florianópolis, que visavam higienizar a cidade e dar ares modernos aos seus habitantes, o Remo e sua prática seriam incentivados. Intelectuais, imprensa e sociedade se intrincariam com a prática náutica, pois durante as regatas os remadores tornar-se-iam verdadeiros heróis ao exibirem sua força, beleza e disciplina. Assim, esboçar a presença do Remo e as suas relações com um corpo, a cidade e uma intelectualidade na capital catarinense, do início do século XX, é o principal objetivo desta dissertação. Abstract: In Florianópolis, the first Society of Regattas organized, mid-nineteenth century, would include the participation of the colonels Navy and School of Minors Marines and the Gunboat. At the turn of the century, the foundation of the Clube 29 de Abril, activities related with the Rowing were offered to all who associate the Clube. However, only between the years 1915 and 1918, with the founding of the Clubes Náuticos Riachuelo and Martinelli and Clube Regata Aldo Luz, the rowing is that acquire their characteristic physical practice and healthy man. Among the urban transformations that occurred in Florianópolis, which aimed to sanitize and give the city its modern air inhabitants, Rowing and his practice would be encouraged. Intellectuals, media and society had spoken of nautical practice, rowers would become real heroes to showcase their strength, beauty and discipline. Sketch the presence of Remo and their relationships with one body, the city and Intellectuality in the capital of Santa Catarina, in the early twentieth century, is the main objective of this work
Caracterización de la dieta del pez espada (Xiphias gladius Linnaeus, 1758) en la costa occidental de Baja California, México
No full textLa ecologia trofica del pez espada (Xiphias gladius) ha sido insuficientemente estudiada en el océano Pacifico donde, sin embargo, se realizan la mitad de Jas capturas mundiales de esta especie. Se examinaron los contenidos estomacales de 173 peces espada capturados en ocho viajes de pesca comercial en la costa occidental de Baja California, durante 1992 y enero de 1993. Los cefalopodos dominaron en la dieta durante los primeros cuatro cruceros, realizados en el sur de Baja California, con el 85% en numero, 90% en peso y 96% en frecuencia de ocurrencia y su composicion en la dieta fue constante con el ommastréfido Sthenoteuhtis oualaniensis como especie mas relevante. Los peces dominaron en la dieta en los ultimos cuatro cruceros, correspondientes al norte de Baja California, con un 62% en -numero, 84% en peso y 65% en frecuencia de ocurrencia y su composicion en la dieta vario especificamente entre los distintos cruceros, estando encabezada por peces mesopelagicos. Sin embargo, se encontrarondiferencias altamente significativas en la composicion numérica -de las presas entre todos los cruceros, incluso entre aquellos mas similares (G=15.23, g.1.=3,p0.8, p<0.01), pero no con el asignado por el indice de importancia relativa. El tamafio minimo de muestra estimado fue de 20 estomagos y se colectaron suficientes estomagos para describir la dieta tanto en el norte como en el sur de la costa. No se encontraron diferencias significativas en el indice de llenado de los estomagos (F=0.988, g..=7, 157, p=0.441). Se discuten dos interpretaciones distintas relacionadas con este hecho. Se hallaron diferencias significativas en el contenido caldrico de las presas, pero probablemente el aporte caldrico de éstas en la dieta del pez espada depende en mayor medida de suparticipacionen la dieta. El pez espada result6 ser un depredador eficaz y oportunista cuyadieta refleja la abundancia de sus presas en el medio. Este hecho permitid obtener informacion sobre la ecologia algunas presas. Se discute también la metodologia empleada en el estudio de la dieta de grandes depredadores.Trophic ecology of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) has not been sufficiently studied in the Pacific ocean where half of the world catches occur. Stomach contents of 173 swordfishes caugth along Baja California western coast in eight comercial fishing trips during 1992 and January 1993 were analyzed. Cephalopods dominated the diet over the first four cruises, made off southern Baja California: 85% by number, 90% by weigth and 96% by frequency of ocurrence. Their composition in the diet was constant, ommastrephid Sthenoteuhtis oualaniensis was the most important species. Fishes dominated the diet in the last four cruises, off northern Baja California: 62% by number, 84% by weigth and 65% by frequency of ocurrence. The fish species composition in the diet varied specifically over distinct cruises, being mesopelagic species the most important class. However, highly significant differences were found in numerical composition of prey species between all cruises, even between the most similar cruises (G=15.23, g.1.=3, p<0.01). Modified volume method’s order of prey ranking was high significantly correlated in most cruises with that of gravimetric method but it was not correlated with that of index of relative importance. Estimated minimum sample size was found to be 20 stomachs, enough stomachs were collected for diet description in both, southern and northern coasts. Significant differences were not observed in stomachs fullness index between all cruises (F=0.988, g.1.=7, 157, p=0.441) and two related interpretations with this fact are discussed. Significant differences were found between prey species caloric contents, but each prey’s caloric contribution to swordfish diet depends mainly on their proportion in the diet. Swordfish prove to be an efficient and opportunistic predator, whose diet reflects prey abundances in their environment. This allowed to obtain additional information about some prey’s ecology. Methodologies used in marine predators diet studies are also dicussed
Szczerbiec (la espada mellada) – la espada de coronación de los reyes de Polonia
No full textThe paper presents the results of newest research on the Szczerbiec – the Polish coronation sword. Technological examinations revealed that the blade was manufactured of bloomery steel, with C contents of c. 0.3-0.6 %. The blade was thermally treated (quenched and tempered) in its part below the hilt. The X-ray revealed no pattern welding or composite structures. All this testifies to the authenticity of the sword as a genuine medieval weapon and not (as sometimes suggested in scholarship) a 19th c. replica. The pommel and the crosspiece were made of silver and then coveted with nielloed gold plates. A combination of typological, stylistic and epigraphic data suggests a date of c. 1250 for the sword. As suggested by the lavishness of ornament and inscriptions of the all-metal hilt, as well as by the rectangular cross-section of the grip, the Szczerbiec may have been influenced by swords of the Mediterranean (especially Iberian) cultural sphere. The swords of Sancho IV of Castille and Léon, of Santa Casilda, of Friedrich II von Hohenstaufen, of the Comtés de Dreux and a sword from the Museo Arqueológico Nacional in Madrid seem to be especially relevant analogies. Of particular significance is a Hebrew or Hebrew-Latin inscription on the crosspiece, which fits into a tradition of Hebrew-inspired voces magicae. The first owner of the sword was in all probability Boles?aw Pobo?ny (the Pious), Duke of Great Poland (died 1279). For Duke Boles?aw the sword was his gladius iustitiae and a protective talisman. The weapon was then inherited (probably through marriage to his daughter Jadwiga c. 1293) by Duke Bolesław Pobożny (the Short or the Ell-high) (the future King of Poland). It was in all probability Duke Vladislao Łokietek who first used the sword as a coronation insignia.Este trabajo presenta los últimos resultados de la investigación sobre la Szczerbiec – la espada de coronación polaca. El examen tecnológico revela que la espada se fabricó a partir de hierro forjado acerado con un contenido de carbono del 0.3-0.6%. La espada recibió tratamiento térmico (templado y revenido) en la hoja por debajo del puño. El examen radiográfico no revela pattern welding o una estructura compuesta. Todo ello demuestra la autenticidad de la espada como una genuina arma medieval y no como una réplica del s. XIX (según se ha propuesto en ocasiones). El pomo y la guarda son de plata cubierta con placas de oro nielado.
La combinación de análisis tipológico, estilístico y epigráfico sugiere una fecha de c. 1250 d.C. para la espada. La rica decoración y las inscripciones del puño metálico, así como las inscripciones, sugieren que la espada puede haber sido influida por armas de la esfera cultural mediterránea, y especialmente de la Península Ibérica. Las espadas de Sancho IV de Castilla y León, de Santa Casilda, de Federico II Hohenstaufen, de los Condes de Dreux, y una espada del MAN de Madrid parecen paralelos especialmente relevantes. Es significativa la inscripción Hebrea-Latina en la guarda, que entronca con una tradición de voces magicae de origen hebreo. El primer dueño de la espada fue probablemente Bolesław Pobożny (el Piadoso), Duque de Polonia (fallecido en 1279). Fue para él su hacia el 1293) por el Duque Vladislao Łokietek, futuro rey de Polonia. Fue probablemente el Duque Vladislao quien por primera vez empleó la espada como insignia en la coronación

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
No full textWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
