Adult-onset muscular dystrophy in a cat associated with a presumptive alteration in trafficking of caveolin-3
A 10-year-old spayed female domestic longhaired cat was referred for evaluation of thoracic limbs weakness and lameness. Muscular hypertrophy and firmness involved mainly proximal muscles, particularly the infraspinatus, supraspinatus, triceps and extensor carpi radialis of the right thoracic
limb and semitendinosus, semimembranosus and gluteal muscles of the right pelvic limb with no neurological deficits. Moderate increase of creatine kinase activity was also revealed. Muscle biopsy showed myopathic features such as rounded atrophic and hypertrophic fibres, increased number of
centrally located myofibre nuclei, scattered rimmed vacuoles, mild perimysial and endomysial fibrosis.
Myofibre necrosis with phagocytosis were present in the gluteal muscle. By immunohistochemistry,
absence of sarcolemmal caveolin-3 was observed in almost all muscle fibres and sarcoplasmic accumulation of the protein was observed in approximately 30% of myofibres. Since a normal
expression of caveolin-3 was detected by immunoblotting, a protein mislocalization in the sarcoplasm due to an aberrant trafficking towards the sarcolemma was suspected. This case represents the first
case of muscular dystrophy due to a caveolinopathy in animals

All authors participated in the discussion of the results, corrected, read, and approved the final manuscript. All authors have read and agreed to the published version of the manuscript.Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is a prevalent canine cardiac disease typically diagnosed and classified using echocardiography. However, accessibility to this technique can be limited in first-opinion clinics. This study aimed to determine if machine learning techniques can classify MMVD according to the ACVIM classification (B1, B2, C, and D) through a structured anamnesis, quality of life survey, and physical examination. This report encompassed 23 veterinary hospitals and assessed 1011 dogs for MMVD using the FETCH-Q quality of life survey, clinical history, physical examination, and basic echocardiography. Employing a classification tree and a random forest analysis, the complex model accurately identified 96.9% of control group dogs, 49.8% of B1, 62.2% of B2, 77.2% of C, and 7.7% of D cases. To enhance clinical utility, a simplified model grouping B1 and B2 and C and D into categories B and CD improved accuracy rates to 90.8% for stage B, 73.4% for stages CD, and 93.8% for the control group. In conclusion, the current machine-learning technique was able to stage healthy dogs and dogs with MMVD classified into stages B and CD in the majority of dogs using quality of life surveys, medical history, and physical examinations. However, the technique faces difficulties differentiating between stages B1 and B2 and determining between advanced stages of the disease.Depto. de Medicina y Cirugía AnimalFac. de VeterinariaTRUEpu
Love and social customs in the Spanish Golden Age: amorous and exemplary novels by María de Zayas y Sotomayor
The main objective of this work is to delve into the social and amorous customs
of the Spanish Golden Age, with special emphasis on the 17th century, as well as on the
life of noble women in that period. All of this is based on two pillars: the first, the
Amorous and Exemplary Novels (1637) by the Spanish author María de Zayas y
Sotomayor. The second, the main philosophical treaties and conduct and behaviourial
books for young people that were developed in the period we are dealing with. For a
better understanding of the reader of what is being explained with the treatises, we will
proceed to exemplify what is exposed in these treatises with the plot of the work of María

Life at oxygen minimum zone: bacterial symbiosis in the gills of the bivalve Kelliella miliaris
Kelliella miliaris (Philippi, 1844) is a minute bivalve, living on the surface of soft sediments, from the continental shelf to bathyal depths, commonly in the oxygen minimum zones (OMZ) and/or in reducing habitats. The scarcity of data on the biology of Kelliella prompted us to investigate, at ultrastructural level, specimens found in southern Spain. Kelliella miliaris shows several morphological characteristics that would be adaptive for living in the OMZ: (1) presence of numerous muscular fibers in the mantle, mantle edge and gills-visceral mass connection; all of which would allow to actively move the gills and/or enable a better control of the ventral opening in relation to vertical movements of the animal; (2) high number (in relation to body size) and large size of gill filaments, mainly in the large inner demibranch; and (3) long cilia which would provide a large surface for capture of oxygen and a highly effective uptake of oxygen from water. We have observed in all the specimens examined the presence of numerous rod shaped bacteria among the gill cilia. These bacteria show the typical double membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. The analysis of the bacterial DNA revealed that Gammaproteobacteria is the most abundant class, with 53.69% of total reads. The latter, together with the peak of oxygen and the presence of sulfur inside the electron dense granules from the bacteria, determined by TEM-EDX analysis, point to the involvement of these bacteria in the oxidization of the sulfide to thiosulfate. The presence of bacteria in the gills of Kelliella miliaris highlights the importance of the chemosynthetic symbiosis in the OMZs of the oceans that has been probably overlooked up to now. The presence of different microorganisms in the stomach indicates heterotrophy. We have found spermatozoids inside the female gonad, which confirms internal fertilization in K. miliaris. However, the presence of protoconch I and protoconch II, indicates planktotrophic larval development. The author(s) declare that financial support was received for the research and/or publication of this article.
The goal of the latest historical novel (also called historiographical metafiction) in Spain is to “de(con)struct”, that is to say, to interpret again and even to destroy the official history, and not so much to reconstruct it. This goal is directly related to the aesthetic paradigm to which it belongs: the postmodernism. At the same time, it is realist in a broader sense, as it mimetises the plural ontology of the advanced industrial societies, in which reality is not a stable concept any more, but it is identified with fiction. This is what Fabulosas narraciones por historias, by Antonio Orejudo Utrilla (1996), shows: the author turns the history of Spanish literature upside down and rallies for the postmodern historical revisionism, at the same time as he offers us a very critical glance at Occident past.
