    A systematic review of the effectiveness of community-based interventions aimed at improving health literacy of parents/carers of children

    Aim: the aim of this systematic review was to examine the effectiveness of community-based health literacy interventions in improving the health literacy of parents.Methods: a systematic review of six databases - MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Education Source - was conducted to identify relevant articles. Risk of bias was assessed using version two of the Cochrane risk of bias tool for randomised controlled trials or the Cochrane collaboration risk of bias in non-randomised studies of interventions. The study findings were grouped and synthesised following the synthesis without meta-analysis framework.Results: eleven community-based health literacy interventions for parents were identified. Study design included randomised controlled trials ( n = 4), non-randomised studies with comparison group ( n = 4), and non-randomised studies without a comparison group ( n = 3). Interventions were delivered digitally, in person or a combination of the two. The risk of bias was high in over half the studies ( n = 7). The main findings of the studies showed some potential for both in person and digital interventions to increase parental health literacy. Studies were heterogeneous preventing a meta-analysis. Conclusion: community-based, health literacy interventions have been identified as potential methods for enhancing parental health literacy. Due to the small number of included studies and their potential for bias, these results must be interpreted with caution. This study emphasises the need for additional theory and evidence-based research on the long-term effects of community interventions.</p

    Assessment and Management of Risk for Intimate Partner Violence by Police Officers Using the Brief Spousal Assault Form for the Evaluation of Risk

    The management of intimate partner violence (IPV) typically falls to police. For assistance, officers are increasingly using violence risk assessment tools like the Brief Spousal Assault Form for the Evaluation of Risk (B-SAFER). This study replicates the methodology of Belfrage et al. but examines the B-SAFER as used by Swedish police officers when assessing and managing IPV. Results revealed a positive relationship between risk and management. Total scores and overall risk ratings predicted recidivism (AUC [Area under the curve] = .70 and .69, respectively). Finally, a pattern where management recommendations were associated with decreased recidivism in high risk perpetrators but increased recidivism in low risk perpetrators was found. Results validate the use of the B-SAFER by police and reveal mostly comparable findings between the B-SAFER and the Spousal Assault Risk Assessment Guide, as examined by Belfrage et al., but suggest that the B-SAFER may be better suited for police

    Health literacy profiling of parents in two disadvantaged inner-city areas in the United Kingdom

    Background : Health literacy refers to the skills needed to access, understand, and navigate health information and services. Limited parental health literacy is associated with ineffective preventive behaviours and worse child health outcomes. People with limited financial and social resources are more likely to have limited health literacy. Profiling health literacy strengths and limitations of a population allows the multidimensional nature of health literacy to be considered and highlight patterns of need. Aims : This study aimed to identify the health literacy profiles of parents of children aged 0–4 years in two cities in the United Kingdom with high levels of deprivation (Portsmouth, Southampton), and develop vignettes to illustrate their diverse experiences. Methods : A mixed-methods approach was employed using the Optimising Health Literacy and Access framework. Quantitative data were collected using the Health Literacy Questionnaire-Parent version (HLQ-Parent) among parents from two cities. Hierarchical cluster analysis was performed on the HLQ-Parent data to identify clusters reflecting varied health literacy strengths and limitations across its nine domains. Demographic data enriched the profiles. Qualitative data from semi-structured interviews contextualized the clusters, with vignettes created to represent each profile in an explanatory sequential design. Results : A total of 175 participants (mean age 33 years; 98% female) completed the HLQ-Parent. Eight clusters with distinct health literacy profiles emerged. In both cities, one cluster (44% of participants) exhibited high scores across all domains, while another cluster (20% of participants) displayed significant challenges across all domains. Eight vignettes were created to represent the lived experiences of parents within each health literacy profile, highlighting the unique strengths and challenges faced by each cluster. Discussion : This study provides a deeper understanding of how parents use health information and navigate services to manage their children’s health and wellbeing. The findings highlight that a one-size-fits-all approach to improving health literacy would overlook those with the greatest needs, emphasising the importance of developing interventions to the unique characteristics of each identified health literacy cluster. The vignettes developed will inform future research, including stakeholder workshops, to co-design targeted health literacy interventions and solutions, ensuring they address the specific strengths and challenges identified in this study

    Identification of the phosphorylation site in vitro for cAMP-dependent protein kinase on the rat adipocyte cGMP-inhibited cAMP phosphodiesterase

    Rat adipocyte cGMP-inhibited cAMP phosphodiesterase (cGI-PDE) appears to be dually regulated in intact cells by serine phosphorylations induced by isoprenaline and insulin, respectively (Degerman, E., Smith, C. J., Tornqvist, H., Vasta, V., Belfrage, P., and Manganiello, V. C. (1990) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 87, 533-537; Smith, C. J., Vasta, V., Degerman, E., Belfrage, P., and Manganiello, V. C. (1991) J. Biol. Chem. 266, 13385-13390). Since cAMP-dependent protein kinase (cAMP-PK) catalyzes the beta-adrenergic effects, the site in the isolated cGI-PDE phosphorylated by this kinase was explored. A peptide, LRRSSGASGLLTSEHHSR (P18), corresponding to the amino acid sequence Leu423-Arg440 in the putative regulatory domain of the rat adipocyte cGI-PDE was synthesized. It contains a consensus substrate sequence -RRXS- for cAMP-PK within two tryptic cleavage sites and was readily phosphorylated by cAMP-PK. Two phosphopeptides, identified as RS-[32P]SGASGLLTSEHHSR and S-[32P]SGASGLLTSEHHSR, were obtained after stoichiometric phosphorylation and trypsinization of the peptide. These two peptides and the two main tryptic phosphopeptides obtained from immunoisolated [32P]cGI-PDE phosphorylated with cAMP-PK in a solubilized crude adipocyte membrane fraction were immuno-precipitated by an affinity-purified polyclonal antibody raised against P18 and exhibited the same chromatographic and electrophoretic profiles in three different separation systems. Similar radiosequencing profiles indicated that the second most N-terminal serine, corresponding to Ser-427 in the intact cGI-PDE, was phosphorylated by cAMP-PK in both P18 and authentic cGI-PDE. It is concluded that serine 427 is the target for cAMP-PK phosphorylation of the rat adipocyte cGI-PDE in vitro

    Stimulation of rat adipocytes with insulin and isoproterenol results in serine phosphorylation and activation of the adipocyte cGMP-inhibited phosphodiesterase (cGI PDE), events believed to be important in the antilipolytic action of insulin (Degerman, E., Smith, C.J., Tornqvist, H., Vasta, V., Manganiello, V.C., and Belfrage, P. (1990) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 87,533-537). Here we demonstrate, by two-dimensional phosphopeptide mapping, that the major phosphopeptide generated by trypsin, or trypsin followed by Asp-N protease digestion of [32P]cGI PDE phosphorylated in adipocytes in response to isoproterenol and/or insulin, in each case co-migrates with the phosphopeptide released by the same treatment of M297FRRPS(P)LPCISREQ310. This peptide was synthesized based on the deduced sequence of the cloned rat adipocyte cGI PDE and phosphorylated by cAMP-dependent protein kinase (protein kinase A). Radiosequencing of authentic and synthetic tryptic 32P-peptides showed that a single site in cGI PDE (Ser302) was phosphorylated in adipocytes incubated with isoproterenol and/or insulin. The more than additive phosphorylation and activation of cGI PDE in response to the two hormones found in this report and previously (Smith, C.J., Vasta, V., Degerman, E., Belfrage, P., and Manganiello, V.C. (1991) J. Biol. Chem. 266, 13385-13390) is proposed to reflect cross-talk between their respective signal transduction pathways at the level of the cGI PDE serine protein kinase or upstream regulatory component(s)

    El presente artículo examina la representación de las dinámicas de poder anglo-escocesas en los relatos de Alasdair Gray ‘You’ (1993) y ‘Mavis Belfrage’ (1996) desde un marco teórico interdisciplinar que combina historia de Escocia, teoría poscolonial y estudios de género. El análisis de los personajes escoceses e ingleses como potenciales símbolos de la nación proporciona conocimientos esclarecedores sobre la conceptualización literaria de la identidad escocesa versus la identidad inglesa en Alasdair Gray. Ambos relatos incorporan las desigualdades nacionales y de género: los débiles escoceses son dominados por poderosos ingleses. Finalmente, la representación de personajes ingleses y escoceses como símbolos de la nación en estos dos relatos retrata la unión con Inglaterra como una pérdida de poder para Escocia enfatizando la necesidad de conseguir la independencia

    Assessing Violence Risk Among Female IPV Perpetrators: An Examination of the B-SAFER

    Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global problem and one in which frontline assessment and management falls primarily to police. Although IPV is often conceptualized as a male-perpetrated crime, evidence substantiates female IPV perpetration and increased arrest rates, raising important issues for police. This article examines police use of the Brief Spousal Assault Form for the Evaluation of Risk (B-SAFER; Kropp, Hart, & Belfrage, 2005, 2010), a violence risk assessment tool for IPV. The B-SAFER was used to assess and manage 52 women arrested for IPV. When compared to Belfrage and Strand (2008), who examined men arrested for IPV in the same sample, women possessed fewer risk factors. Risk factors were related to summary risk judgments, although differences existed between genders and risk judgments were not related to management recommendations. Results suggest that risk factors, in addition to those in the B-SAFER, are required to assess risk for female IPV
