Pola Komunikasi Pada Komunitas Daring Pelajar Pendidikan Jarak Jauh (StudiNetnografi Pada Komunitas Daring Mahasiswa Universitas Terbuka)

    No full text

Group Communication Patterns of Universitas Terbuka Students’ Online Community on WhatsApp

    No full text
This qualitative constructivist research focuses on understanding the group communication patterns that emerged from interaction within distance learning student’s online community. Although distance learning has allowed students to pursue higher education without being bound by time and space constraints, this learning mode also separates students from one another. Communication technology, such as the instant messaging platform WhatsApp, becomes an option for students to replace in-person interaction with virtual interaction. This research uses DeVito’s concept of group communication patterns to analyze the communication between students as a member of an online community on WhatsApp group chat. Based on the online observation data and interviews, this research has found that two group communication patterns emerged from the online community interaction: wheel pattern communication and star pattern communication. The patterns themselves depend on the conversation topic between group members. Wheel pattern typically emerges in a Q&A type of conversation where one member would ask questions and receive responses from multiple group members. Meanwhile, star pattern communication is found only in conversations related to sharing personal experiences as distance learning students.

    No full text
Students’ well-being has become a recent concern in education. Many related literatures mentioned that well-being is one of the significant factors in determining students’ success. However, many distance education students experience loneliness and alienation because of lacking social presence and social connectedness. Those problems resulted in a low level of well-being. To deal with the problem, the department carries out Caring and Sharing regularly. The program includes an e-lecture, webinar, greeting from the department, and alumni’s story. The present research aims to explore the students’ perception of Caring and Sharing in improving well-being. To achieve the purpose of the study, a narrative inquiry is employed. Three students from English Literature Department who joined Caring and Sharing were interviewed to know their perception and experience in the program. The finding shows that the students have positive reactions regarding Caring and Sharing and they agree that the program helps improve their well-being. It builds the students’ sense of belonging, confidence, and motivation to study. Moreover, it also identifies aspects influencing their well-being in distance learning. The limitations of the findings are discussed for future research

This research aims to develop learning designs in Massive Open and Online Courses (MOOCs) of Public Speaking. This research is compiled based on the previous research results, which show that MOOCs Public Speaking is not yet optimal regarding program learning design, learning materials, and competency evaluation. The results of this study will benefit improving the MOOCs Public Speaking program developed by Universitas Terbuka (UT) to meet the feasibility aspect. This research used the research and development method to design a syllabus or learning strategy for the MOOCs Public Speaking program. Data collection techniques were conducted through in-depth interviews with informants, including public speaking experts, public speaking practitioners, instructional design experts and UT lecturers who developed MOOCs. The study findings show that, ideally, distance learning Public Speaking course still requires synchronous mode with no more than 15 participants in one class to achieve the learning program's effectiveness. On the other side, when applied to the massive and self-paced MOOCs program, it is considered challenging to accommodate the ideal learning needs of MOOCs Public Speaking

Factors Influencing The Success of The Transformation from Face-To-Face Tutorial Mode to Web Tutorial During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Managerial Approach

    No full text
The Covid-19 pandemic that started in March 2019 was the biggest disruption of this century. All organizations make adjustments to their systems to suit the pandemic situation, including the Open University (UT). This transformation is not easy because it must be done quickly and on a large scale. Web tutorials are web-based online tutorials. The Open University is a university with a long-distance mode in Indonesia that has a reach throughout Indonesia and 52 cities in the world. The current number of UT students is 347,000 students. Internet penetration in Indonesia is still not good. There are still many areas that have not been reached by the internet. Another factor is the competence to use the internet and the learning management system is not sufficient. The process of transformation through innovation is not a simple thing. Successful educational innovation and transformation must be based on sustainability, scope, and scale (Carolan et al., 2020). During the COVID-19 pandemic, the transformation to online learning is not easy. The finding of Morales, et.al (2021) states that the various actors in the learning processes (students, professors, universities) encountered several barriers in adapting to this new setting. This study investigates the factors that influence the transformation of face-to-face tutorials into web-based tutorials. This research is qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. This study investigated 18 informants who worked at UT headquarters and some regional offices. The speakers are unit leaders and employees related to the implementation of web tutorials. Interviews were conducted face-to-face and using the media. The results of the interviews were processed using the NVivo application. The results of data processing show that there are 5 (five) factors that cause the transformation from face-to-face tutorials to web tutorials to take place effectively. The five factors are academic, IT risk, transformation design, supporting factors, and policy risk. These findings indicate that the transformation of face-to- face tutorials into web tutorials in times of disruption requires change in design, consideration of changing risks including informational technology (IT), risks, meeting supporting factors, and taking policy risks into account. The five components of the model can be composed of strategic factors, namely policy, then the main component, namely academic, and supporting components which include supporting factors, IT, and risk management. To obtain an effective model, these five components need to be integrated into a balanced and sequential design. This model is compiled from the information submitted by the informants. This model still requires field testing and refinement. Further research is needed to test the model of the transformation of face-to-face tutorials into web tutorials

Abstract:  Tidung Island is one of the tourist destinations that have the potential to become a prima donna for domestic and foreign tourists. The stunning natural panorama opens up the potential as one of the main destinations in Indonesia and its projections can provide benefits for the government and the surrounding community. Supposedly the potential of nature needs to be socialized to potential tourists. In this case, it needs a thorough effort from all parties, especially the local government and state apparatus in Tidung Island, Kepulauan Seribu. All officers or village employees need to be an example and pioneer in the use of social media as an effort to destination branding Tidung Island, Thousand Islands. Ironically, in Tidung Island itself, both the village and the community do not optimize various promotional media such as social media to publish as widely as possible about the beauty of Tidung Island. Tidung Island itself is considered by tourists as the second Maldives Island in Indonesia for tourists who have come to the island. Therefore, the existence of community service activities that focus on training the use of social media, namely Instagram as the main promotional media aims to improve the destination branding of Tidung Island, Thousand Islands. Hopefully, in the future, Tidung Island tourism can experience an increase in tourists and make Tidung Island one of the favorite destinations of domestic and foreign tourists
