Artists' Initiatives in the Global South and Their New Economy

    No full text
Valerio Rocco Orlando’s ongoing research South of Imagination recognizes in the cultural horizon of the Global South the social resource required to establish an unconventional educational experience at Matera in a state-owned building granted to the artist for the next thirty years. The Epistemologies of the South by Boaventura de Sousa Santos and the Southern Question by Antonio Gramsci foster this process. A series of workshops involving independent and multidisciplinary communities of artists Adrian Paci in Shkodër (Art House), Wael Shawky in Alexandria (MASS,) Yto Barrada in Tangier (Cinémathèque de Tanger) represent the educational action able to draw on the unconventional knowledge of the southern demo-diversities

Hermann Kant. Ein bio- bibliografisches Profil

The proximity to the power apparatus has cast dark shadows on the literary work of Hermann Kant, who is regarded as one of the most read authors of the GDR. Valerio Furneri embeds Kant's life and work in the all-German context of the 20th century and reinterprets his classics such as Die Aula or Der Aufenthalt. The author does not pursue the claim to rehabilitate the GDR, nor to trivialise Kant's role in it. Instead, the attempt is made to look at Kant's entire work from a temporal distance and to re-evaluate it. Through his works, Kant was able to accompany and depict not only the German-German history, but also European history.

The theme of this thesis is the legal sociability as a link between sociability and Right in Kant. The concept of legal sociability occurs only and properly in the § 60 of Critique of Judgement, the KU. Kant does not define it, he limits himself to say that a people constitutes a everlasting community through it and that it fought to unite freedom and coercion. In this sense, Valerio Rohden, in an article titled Sociabilidade legal uma ligação entre direito e humanidade na 3ª Crítica de Kant, text that will serve as a kind of key interpretation of Kant throughout this thesis, will design the legal sociability as the capacity and willingness to be guidedfor the principles of Right and, therefore, as a prerequisite for a political constitution, environment in which, according to Kant, all the human arrangements may be developed. It aims to show, in a general way, that the concept of legal sociability, even though it appears only on the § 60 of KU, pervades other works in the sense of Kant.s own understanding of the term sociability in these works, in the meaning that while a sociability that leads to Right, more properly as a society capacity that is linked to a capacity and a willingness of imposing rational obligations, rules of coexistence, capacity and willingness without which society is impossible. To show you that, this work is developed in four chapters. The first one makes a rebuilding of the sociability concepts approach and Right in the work Idea for a Universal History with a Cosmopolitan Purpose (IaG). In this work, the concept of sociability appears in the form of a sociability which is unsociable, the one which will orc individuals to enter in a civil state according to laws and will lead the States to enter in a nation federation. Such a sociability may be considered as a legal one. This is what is specifically sought to defend. The second chapter shows the concepts of sociability and Law in the work Conjectural Begining of the human History (MAM). I this work, the concept of sociability is considered en passant as the highest end of human determination and also as a human art, which resulted from the begining of a culture which highly aims the perfect civil constitution. Such a sociability can also e considered as a legal sociability. The third chapter focuses in the work Critique of Judgement (KU), which is the only one, as referred before, in which the concept of legal sociability occurs in the text. In this sense, the chapter rebuilds the Kant.s text until it reaches to the approach of sociability conceptsand, particularly, the one of legal sociability, and, because of that, it holds on an examination of these two concepts. The fourth and last chapter refers to the work Doctrine of Right (RL). This work does not shows the concept of sociability, so it shows the concept of Right and the principle honeste vive, attributed to Ulpiano, considered by Kant a duty of law. This principle, also named juridical honesty, refers, according to Alessandro Pinzani in his text called Der systematische Stellenwert der pseudo-ulpianischen Regeln in Kants Rechtslehre, to a pré-juridical condition, because its an internal attitude and, thus, precedes the existence of legal rules and, therefore, of Right in general. Thus, this principle can be considered as legal sociability. This is what advocates here

The intentionality of matter: the personal character of nature in Edith Stein's "Potency and act"

    No full text
In the closing chapter, Francesco Valerio Tommasi elaborates upon the analogy between person and nature in Stein. As he emphasizes, Stein attributes to nature an objectively spiritual dimension, a hidden form of intentionality. As the author suggests, for Stein nature turns out to be a living sign of the spirit—thus, a sign expressing spiritual values, such as emotions. This perspective is present in both the lectures on The Constitution of the Human Person and Potency and Act: the phenomenological reflection on personhood is combined, Tommasi argues, with a Thomist view that brings Stein to conceiving the life of the entire cosmos as a spirit (or act) informing it and shaping it into a living sign of the creation

Tuning a linear quadratic regulator for point absorber wave energy converters

    No full text
A Wave Energy Converter deployed in Italy uses Proportional—Derivative control to optimise its Power Take-Off system. Different controllers were obtained for different sea states, but this cumbersome process takes a long time. This paper explores the alternative possibility of a time invariant control law (a Linear Quadratic Regulator) based upon optimal control theory, relying upon simulations of a simpler heaving point absorber

This volume documents the Proceedings of the 1st Workshop on Resources and Techniques for User and Author Profiling in Abusive Language (ResT-UP), held online on 12 May 2020 as part of the LREC 2020 conference (International Conference on Language Resources and Evaluation). The workshop aimed at bringing together researchers and scholars working on author profiling and automatic detection of abusive language on the Web, e.g., cyberbullying or hate speech, with a twofold objective: improving the existing LRs, e.g., datasets, corpora, lexicons, and sharing ideas on stylometry techniques and features needed for profile information extraction and classification. ResT-UP targeted Profiling scholars and research groups, experts in Statistic and Stylistic Analysis of texts as well as computational linguists who investigate author profile and personality both in short texts (social media posts, blog texts and email) and in long texts (such as pamphlets, (fake) news and political documents). ReST-UP represented an opportunity to share profiling experiments with the scientific community and to show automatic detection techniques of abusive language on the Web. Despite the cancellation of LREC 2020 due to the COVID-19 international emergency, ResT-UP was organized online on Microsoft Teams on May 12th 2020 and the programme included three oral presentations and featured an invited talk by Paolo Rosso. ResT-UP was attended by about fifty representatives of academic and industrial organisations

The paper examines how Valerio Evangelisti took inspiration from Dante’s Inferno for his Eymerich saga. Evangelisti considers the Middle Ages a mirror of the present and depicts history as a complex system of interrelated events and characters which are mutually linked. In creating a medieval atmosphere which is synchronous with other eras, the author often evokes images and characters from Dante’s Inferno.
