The first defence of ladies on the American continent was a poem published in Lima, in 1603, by Diego Dávalos y Figueroa. Defensa de damas was written as a second part of the Miscelánea Austral (1602), an extensive dialogue where Delio and Cilena (the author Diego Dávalos and his wife Francisca de Briviesca) talk about multiple subjects, including love and ladies’ qualities and behaviour. This essay pays attention to female cultural roles in Davalos’ works. It suggests the possibility that his wife had also taken part in his production.

Léon-Gontran Damas, genre and resistance : an alternative trajectory of Négritude
This thesis offers a new perspective on Leon-Gontran Damas through a postcolonial reading of his works. It integrates genre theory into its analysis in order to demonstrate how his conceptualisation of Negritude modulated. In particular, it theorises that the modulation in Damasian Negritude ideology occurs alongside the adoption of certain literary forms. The introduction establishes the background for research on Damas's work and contextualises it through recent approaches to postcolonial studies and genre theory, and the four chapters of the thesis analyse how generic experimentation allows different perspectives of Damasian Negritude to emerge. The first chapter examines Damas's Pigments (1937), and how the different voices within this poetry collection together represent an emergence of anti-colonial consciousness, or a Saidian 'voyage in'. Following this, the second chapter, which examines Retour de Guyane (1938), analyses Damas's encounter with colonialism in Guyane through his ethnographic essay. The third chapter on Veillees noires (1943) explores how Damas returns to his own Guyanese cultural traditions, contesting colonialism through his representation of folk tales. Finally, the fourth chapter, on Black-Label (1956) suggests that the long poem is a reflection upon colonialism and its afterlives. In demonstrating that the evolution of Damasian Negritude is linked to generic experimentation, this thesis presents the author's alternative trajectory of Negritude as an imaginative and mutable process of a voyage, encounter, return and reflection. An original contribution to postcolonial studies and Francophone studies is made in three ways. Firstly, this research develops the notion of Damasian Negritude as a dynamic and unstable process of literary expression. Secondly, it considers Damas as an author who wrote in opposition to French empire. Thirdly, the study combines a postcolonial approach to literature with genre theory for the first time, and thus aims to further expand the purview of the literary dimension of postcolonial studies.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo
De la litt?rature d\u27expression fran?aise de L?on-Gontran Damas ? la litt?rature-monde
Thanks to the evolution of critics and reception of literary texts written in French either by non-hexagonal authors or by migrant writers, the works of the earliest francophone writers can be well thought-out. Mainly, we could consider L.-G. Damas? works as one of the first examples of ?litt?rature-monde?. ISEM has been studying these reading hypotheses throughout a collaboration net and exchanges about both this Guyanese author and ?litt?rature-monde? in French.
The article focuses the novel Juego de Damas by Rafael Humberto Moreno Durán (Tunja, 1948) from three perspectives. First, it locates the author and his work in the Latin American generation of writers formed in the spirit of rebelliousness of the 60’s. Then, it is concentrated in the humoristic demystification that the novel does of the university left movement of the time. And finally, it analyzes the image of women and the feminine presented in the text. In each one of these three subjects, it is emphasized in the formal resources turning this novel a verbal poliphony.
Abstract: In this article we study the representation of the Tirailleur s\ue9n\ue9galais dating from the poetry of L.G. Damas (Pigments 1937; “Mine de riens”, posthumous edition 2012) up until Fr\ue8re d’\ue2me, the second novel by Senegalese author David Diop. A character in the margins of Antillean and Guyanese literature, the black war veteran is a figure of relay between two worlds of oppression: first of all, the French colony, and secondly, the “Zone occup\ue9e” (occupied zone) or concentration camps. A mostly onedimensional character in Caribbean literature, the black soldier is also depicted in the novels of Andr\ue9 and Simone Schwarz-Bart. In their project of a series of novels bringing together black and white worlds and histories, one senses that a Senegalese warrior may have crossed Mariotte’s path. The protagonist of Un plat de porc aux bananes vertes () evokes the memories of a Senegalese friend. However, considering the incompleteness of the schwarzbartian series one could speculate that this Senegalese friend could have been a soldier or a black “resistance” fighter who had to meet with the Afro-Caribbean woman who died in solitude in Paris. The 2018 novel by Senegalese author David Diop, Fr\ue8re d’\ue2mes, which was published in concurrence with the centennial commemoration of the end of the Great War, seems to complete the Schwarz-Bartian series and provide missing answers
Kreyol Intertextuality and Decolonizing Narrative in Veillées noires
This essay identifies three levels of intertextuality in the short story, “Echec et mat” by Léon-Gontran Damas. Incorporating folkloric tales, lyrics from popular music, and 19th Century satiric writing in Kreyol, “Echec et mat” offers a microcosm of the intertextual techniques employed throughout the entire collection, Veillées noires. In particular, I analyze Damas’s embedding of a satire written and published in Kreyol by Guadeloupean author Paul Baudot. While this Kreyol satire—written by a white béké author from the mid-19th Century—is ambiguous politically, and must be determined by musical and folkloric references, Damas nevertheless signals the importance of earlier Caribbean writing in Kreyol. Such writing co-exists with other forms of cultural production and is part of the reservoir from which Damas draws to assemble his complex anti-colonial discourse. These intertextual traces reveal a cultural identity that is plural as well as anti-colonial.
