Application of low-cost alginate-based biosorbents for effective recovery of rare earth elements
Rare earth elements are used in many high-tech applications but their rarity and availability require the development of methods for their recovery from low-quality sources and recycling from waste materials. Sorption processes, including biosorbents, are an interesting method for their recovery from dilute solutions. This work investigates the sorption of lanthanum(III) ions using cheap, renewable biosorbents: calcium alginate and biochar (considered as reference materials) and an alginatebased biosorbent named alginate-biochar composite (ALG-BC). Sorption properties of these materials were compared using batch-adsorption techniques, under various sorption conditions. The obtained sorption results show the applicability of the biosorbents for rare earth elements recovery. The research was funded by the National Science Centre in accordance with decision No. 2019/35/N/STS/01390.Dominika Fila: [email protected] Fila - Department of Inorganic Chemistry, Institute of Chemical Sciences, Faculty of Chemistry, Maria Curie-Sklodowska University, Maria Curie Sklodowska Sq. 2, 20-031 Lublin (Poland)Zbigniew Hubicki - Department of Inorganic Chemistry, Institute of Chemical Sciences, Faculty of Chemistry, Maria Curie-Sklodowska University, Maria Curie Sklodowska Sq. 2, 20-031 Lublin (Poland)Dorota Kołodyńska - Department of Inorganic Chemistry, Institute of Chemical Sciences, Faculty of Chemistry, Maria Curie-Sklodowska University, Maria Curie Sklodowska Sq. 2, 20-031 Lublin (Poland)Anastopoulos I., Bhatnagar A., Lima E.C. Possibilities of recovery and separation of rare earth elements
Rare earth metals are a group of elements widely used in high technology products. They are included in the group of critical mineral resources for the EU economy. Rare earth elements are found in computers and mobile phones, as well as in low-emission energy technologies. They are also applied in chemical processes as catalysts in the oil refining. Some of them occur even in considerable quantities in the earth's crust but not very often in the concentrations justifying the profitability of their extraction. Additionally, the constantly growing demand and the current market situation cause that alternative resources of rare earth elements recovery are sought after. Therefore, the recovery and separation methods as well as recovery from the secondary sources are becoming more and more important. The following paper presents the possibilities of recovery and separation of rare earth elements from primary and secondary sources
Fixed-Bed Column Adsorption Studies: Comparison of Alginate-Based Adsorbents for La(III) Ions Recovery
The paper investigated the adsorption of the packed-bed column with the alginate-based adsorbents (ALG-based adsorbents) such as alginate-biochar, alginate-clinoptilolite, alginate-lignin, and alginate-cellulose for La(III) ions’ removal. Fixed-bed adsorption studies with various alginate-based adsorbents were carried out and compared to the La(III) ions adsorption. The columns were filled with ALG-based adsorbent beads of approximately 1.1 ± 0.005 mm spherical shapes. The effects of the inlet concentrations on the breakthrough curves were studied in terms of the adsorption performance of the ALG-based adsorbents. The experimental data were correlated with the Adams-Bohart, Yoon-Nelson, Thomas, and Wolborska models to determine the best operational parameters. Based on the comparison of R2 values, the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models were found to be more suitable than the Adams–Bohart and Wolborska models. In the desorption study, the ALG-based adsorbents packed columns showed the maximum desorption of La(III) just after passing 100 cm3 of 1 mol/dm3 HCl. Overall, the results show that ALG-based adsorbents could be used for continuous recovery of La(III) ions from aqueous solutions and were not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly
Combining Bayesian Networks and Fishbone Diagrams to Distinguish between Intentional Attacks and Accidental Technical Failures
Because of modern societies' dependence on industrial control systems, adequate response to system failures is essential. In order to take appropriate measures, it is crucial for operators to be able to distinguish between intentional attacks and accidental technical failures. However, adequate decision support for this matter is lacking. In this paper, we use Bayesian Networks (BNs) to distinguish between intentional attacks and accidental technical failures, based on contributory factors and observations (or test results). To facilitate knowledge elicitation, we use extended fishbone diagrams for discussions with experts, and then translate those into the BN formalism. We demonstrate the methodology using an example in a case study from the water management domain.Safety and Security Scienc
We are heading towards utopia, brother!
The film director is from the core of his work and his inner foundation permanently confronted with ?worlds, that don?t exist?, ?utopias?, that he must authentically (?lifely?) construct for his audience.
That?s the central proposition on which these three essays are based on. The papers try to confront the implied ?brother-director? ? who is perceived as an all-encompassing author, both of the audio-visual and the intellectual concept of the cinematic work - with the necessity to cope with the theme of the ?utopian community?, utopia as such.
Technocratic dreamer, brother director, is in the five films dealt with - Lost Horizon (Frank Capra), Muž z prvního století (Man in Outer Space; Oldřich Lipský), Avatar (James Cameron), The Village (M. Night Shyamalan) a The Mosquito Coast (Peter Weir) placed into a situation where he must ?represent the unrepresentable?. He must with all the potentials of the cinematic expression at his disposal materialize ?realized utopian world?.
The wide dispersion of the essayistic style then allows to the author of the paper ? who considers himself to be a film director as well ? to float freely in his topic and jump from ?the light? through ? the time? to the construction of ?the space? or ?the character?. This all with the possible generalization of the author?s propositions and metaphors in mind
Film Director and "the Worlds That Dont Exist"
Technokratický snílek, bratr režisér, je v pěti obmýšlených filmech Ztracený obzor (Lost Horizont; Frank Capra), Muž z prvního století (Oldřich Lipský), Avatar (James Cameron), Vesnice (The Village; M. Night Shyamalan) a Pobřeží moskytů (The Mosquito Coast) postaven před úkol ?zobrazit nezobrazitelné?. Zhmotnit pomocí celé škály možností kinematografického vyjadřování ?realizovaný utopický svět?.
Široký rozptyl esejistického stylu pak autorovi práce, který se rovněž považuje za filmového režiséra, umožňuje, aby se nechal volně unášet svým tématem a mohl se skokově zabývat tu ?světlem?, tu ?časem?, tu konstruováním ?prostoru? či ?postavy?... To vše při vědomí možného profesního zobecnění jím nastolených tezí a metafor. The film director is from the core of his work and his inner foundation permanently confronted with ?worlds, that don?t exist?, ?utopias?, that he must authentically (?lifely?) construct for his audience.

Numerical assessment of preloading strategies for jack-up vessels in cohesive soils
As the demand for renewable energy is constantly rising, more offshore wind farms are being built at sea to meet European targets towards sustainable energy transition. Van Oord’s offshore installation vessel Aeolus was purposely-built to transport and install foundations of offshore wind turbines. To ensure that the vessel remains competitive in a market that is changing rapidly, Van Oord decided to upgrade this vessel to expand its operational capabilities to work on soft soil seabed conditions.Equipped with moveable legs, the mobile jack-up vessel is able to elevate its hull out of the water and provide a stable work platform. Prior to each installation, the soil is preloaded by penetrating the spudcan footings into the soil under the self-weight of the structure, followed by progressively pumping sea water into the ballast tanks until the target preload is reached. Offshore industry guidelines follow the conventional bearing capacity theory to assess jack-up procedures. However, these conventional procedures are inadequate in incorporating all relevant mechanisms that contribute to the preloading behaviour in cohesive soils. The effect of consolidation around the spudcan footings on the soil strength and the viscous strain rate-dependent soil strength are two important aspects which are poorly described in the current guidelines. Using numerical modelling, a better understanding of these mechanisms is aimed for in order to evaluate spudcan bearing capacity in cohesive soils in a more detailed design. An axisymmetric finite element model of the spudcan foundation is constructed in PLAXIS 2D to assess the effects of consolidation and rate-dependence of soil strength on the use of different preloading strategies. As spudcan penetration is relatively fast and clay permeability is relatively low, consolidation effects are found to be insignificant during the preloading process. Contrary, viscous strain rate effects dominate the soil strength of clay in predominantly undrained conditions. Higher shear strengths are found for higher spudcan penetration rates. During the standard jacking process, when the target preload value is reached and the spudcan is stopped, a reduction of the leg load occurs due to decreasing viscous resistances, which must actively be brought back to the target preload value. In clay soils, this leads to further penetrations and multiple preload cycles are required before the spudcan response is stabilised. In terms of preloading duration, a rather slow spudcan penetration rate is therefore beneficial when using the standard jacking procedure.Alternatively, a different jacking procedure is assessed numerically, which adapts for these viscous strain rate effects by overshooting the target preload value by 10-15%, in order to reach the stable spudcan response more quickly. In this way, the spudcan is brought to the depth, which would have been reached by the creep-like additional penetrations in the iterative preload cycles under the target preload value. Once the load is reduced from the overshoot to the target preload value, it is likely that the preload can be sustained without additional penetrations and preload cycles. The overshooting jacking procedure reduces the required preloading time considerably for both spudcan penetration rates. The largest time savings are gained for the largest penetration rates. However, using this method, larger leg penetration predictions compared to the standard jacking procedure are observed for decreasing spudcan penetration rates. That is because in the standard jacking procedure, less creep-like additional penetrations are present when using a slow spudcan penetration rate. The overshooting jacking procedure can thus be considered beneficial for relatively fast spudcan penetration rates, both in term of preloading duration and spudcan penetrations.<br/
The Importance of Female Judge Representation in the Constitutional Court of Indonesia to Achieve Gender Equality during Judicial Review Procedure
The paper will discuss about how important the female judge representation in Indonesia’s Constitutional Court in order to achieve equality between genders during the process of judicial review. The Constitutional Court of Indonesia was created as a body that has the eligibility to review constitutionality under the constitution. One of the jurisdictions that the Constitutional Court of Indonesia has is to conduct judicial review. One of the elements that is needed to be achieved in the process is gender equality, in which a legislation not only guarantee lives of Indonesians as citizens with human rights, but also guarantee the equality of genders. This needs to be upheld in order to eliminate gender biased substances in legislations. Gender biased legislations will lead to disadvantages for genders. For example, the civil relations between a mother and a child born outside wedlock and the age limitation in marriage in the Indonesian Marriage Act. One of the solutions that can be done in order to eliminate gender bias clauses in legislations is by adding female representatives in the Constitutional Court. There is only one out of nine female judge listed in The Constitutional Court of Indonesia. This is seen as a problem, because in terms of reviewing clauses that give women disadvantages, there is only one woman perspectives in male-dominated panel. The research methodology used in this paper is through literature review by examining the process of judicial review. The author also uses literature review and juridical analysis to examine cases regarding gender-biased legislations. In order to examine the legislations, the author uses case study based on the judicial review verdict on the stated legislations. The author also uses literature review to examine secondary quantitative data on gender representations in the Constitutional Court
