The critical edition of the poetic works of Paulinus of Nola which is the main aim of this thesis is the first one since Hartel’s edition, realized at the end of the 19th century. It consists in a global study of the textual tradition of Paulinus of Nola, based on all known manuscripts, study which founds a criticism of attribution based too on metrical, literary, theological, and cultural aspects of Paulinus’ works. The philological and codicological aspects of the question, mostly ignored, have been the subject of a special study, for they often meet Ausonius’ textual history, known as particularly difficult. This edition, preceded by an introduction on textual history and stemmatic reconstruction, comes with, in front of it, the first full French translation. Annotation concentrates on problematics of textual drafting and history, and, through an apparatus of biblical and textual sources and parallels, on the place of Paulinus of Nola in the literary history of late Antiquity

This paper is concerned by a series of four epitaphs known as the Sylloge Elnonensis. It shows that, although they were written at or near Reims in the late 6th century, their author cannot be some local. Actually, there are good grounds to believe that this person was trained at Rome. Since the Sylloge is an exceptional witness to the early reception of Ausonius, this has consequences on what we know of the circulation of the collections of Ausonius' works before any manuscript known to us

Catherine Magne brought to light in 1994 a previously unknown rhythmical poem on the death of Maieul of Cluny ; unfortunately, because of an defect in editing, it went unnoticed. It is here newly edited from the unique known manuscript (Paris, BnF, lat. 5611). It is very likely that its author was Odilo of Cluny, even if some elements point to Jotsald of Saint-Claude

    Laurent de Noves pastiché ?

In the Vetus bibliotheca Floriacensis, there are two homilies on the repentant sinner in Luke 7 (according to the rubrics, ‘on Mary Magdalene'). The first is in fact an extract from the De paenitentia (or De duobus temporibus) of Laurentius, bishop of Novae, a somehow mysterious character once studied by Morin: he is most remarkable for his quite unorthodox opinions on the remission of sins and on the salvation, the former being (as Laurentius sees it) an effect not of Christ's sacrifice but of his baptism. The second homily looks very much like a pastiche of the first. It could have been produced within a Roman, Greak-speaking circle

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
