Public Security User Interfaces Supporting Spontaneous Engagement with IT Security
Publisher Copyright: Copyright © 2024 held by the owner/author(s).We introduce the concept of Public Security User Interfaces as an innovative approach to enhancing cybersecurity awareness and promoting security behavior change among users in public spaces. We envision these interfaces as dynamic platforms that leverage interactive elements and contextual cues to deliver timely security information and guidance to users. We identify four key objectives: raising awareness, triggering actions, providing control, and sparking conversation. Drawing upon Sasse et al.'s Security Learning Curve, we outline the stages for supporting users in adopting new security-related routines into habits, encompassing knowledge, concordance, self-efficacy, implementation, embedding, and secure behavior. Insights from research on public displays and spontaneous interactions inform the design of public security user interfaces tailored to different environments and user groups. Furthermore, we propose research questions pertaining to stakeholders, content, user interface design, and effects on users and discuss challenges as well as limitations. Introducing public security user interfaces to bridge the gap between cybersecurity experts and lay users sets the stage for future research and development in this emerging field.Peer reviewe

The Institutionalisation of a Creative Practice: Changing Roles of Regional Design in Dutch National Planning
This chapter discusses the organisational setting of regional design in the realms of spatial planning and territorial governance. As a starting point, it argues that rules on how imagined design solutions function in an abstract, simplified ‘planning world’ are an important regional design product. When focusing on these rules, regional design practice resembles discretionary action. As such, it aims to improve planning decisions by judging the implications of planning frameworks when applied to particular situations. This implies that the involvement of actors in design practice requires careful consideration. As in any form of legitimate rule-building, a critical distance between those who initiate practices and conduct design, and those who judge the quality and relevance of design outcomes is essential. On the basis of these considerations the chapter investigates regional design practices that occurred between the 1980s and 2010s in the context of Dutch national planning. It shows how they transformed from being a form of professional advocacy, criticising planning, into a practice that was pragmatically used to implement a national planning agenda. The chapter concludes by discussing this institutionalisation of a creative practice in the Netherlands, reflecting upon the implications of these outcomes for territorial governance in particular.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Spatial Planning and Strateg
Beyond Deterrence: A Systematic Review of the Role of Autonomous Motivation in Organizational Security Behavior Studies
peer reviewedWhat drives employees to ensure security when handling information assets in organizations? There is growing interest from the security behavior community in how autonomous motivators shape employees’ security-related behaviors. To reconcile the scattered viewpoints on autonomous motivation and synthesize findings from studies utilizing various theoretical frameworks, we systematically reviewed relevant publications. We present a preregistered literature review that investigated (a) what forms of autonomous motivation have been examined in organizational security contexts, (b) which behaviors/behavioral intentions are related to autonomous motivators, and (c) how autonomous motivation affects employees’ security behaviors. Based on an initial set of 432 papers, filtered down to 45 studies, we identified 17 unique autonomous motivators and three types of related security behaviors. This review not only develops a refined taxonomy of autonomous motivation related to security behaviors but also charts a path forward for future research on autonomous motivation in human-centered security.U-AGR-6035 - IAS AES Anti-phishing - SCHILTZ Christine8.
