Portfolio choice with time horizon risk

    No full text
I study the allocation problem of investors who hold their portfolio until a target wealth is attained. The strategy suppresses final wealth uncertainty but creates an investment time horizon risk. I begin with a simple mean variance model transposed in the duration domain, then study a dynamic portfolio choice problem with Generalized Expected Discounted Utility preferences. Using long-term US return data, I show in the mean variance model that a large amount of time horizon risk can be diversified away by investing a significant share of equities. In the dynamic model, more impatient investors are also more averse to timing risk and invest less in equities. The equity share is downward trending with accumulated wealth relative to its target. Intermittent Discounting

A novel theory of time discounting is proposed in which future consumption is less valuable than present consumption due to waiting costs. Waiting is intermittent as consumer's attention can be distracted away from future gratifications. The model unifies several properties of intertemporal preference like present bias, decreasing impatience or sub-additive discounting. A quantitative puzzle is presented, supported by preliminary experimental evidence, which shows how impatience over short delays may translate into excessive impatience over long delays. The wait-based model offers a solution to the puzzle, contrary to usual models of discounting. J.E.L. codes: D8, E2

    Efficient Scoring of Multiple-Choice Tests

This paper studies the optimal scoring of multiple choice tests by using standard estimation theory where obtained scores are efficient estimators of examinees' ability. The marks for wrong selections and omissions jointly minimize the mean square difference between obtained score and ability. Examinees are loss averse, ie. disproportionately weight the penalty for wrong selection in their utility function, which entails a preference for omission. With a limited number of items, it is efficient to incentivize the lowest able to omit as their answers essentially reflect noise. The shorter the test, the stronger the incentives to omit. Loss aversion improves estimators efficiency by inducing more omission, which reduces the need to bias the marks to foster omission. The model also sheds new lights on the statistical properties of two widely used scoring methods: number right and formula scoring. J.E.L. codes: A200, C930, D80

Households’ Investment in Equities over the Life Cycle

The increasing complexity of financial products offered to households and the recent financial inno-vations have revealed households’ vulnerability and their difficulty in making appropriate decisions. Tounderstand their behaviour, this thesis deals with household portfolio choice over their life cycle. It consistsof four chapters. Professional financial planners often advise savers that the fraction of wealth held in riskyassets should decline with age or the distance to retirement. Chapter 1 sheds light on this recommendation. We show that the investment profile based on this recommendation is not preferable to an investment profilewhose share invested in risky assets remains constant over time, due to the sensitivity of their performance tomarket and investment length. This led us to analyse the relationship between financial decisions and portfolioinertia in Chapter 2. It appears that the risky share is sensitive to market conditions, but mainly at the dateof subscription. Once the initial share has been selected, inertia of portfolio choice is observed as investorsrarely revise their position subsequently. However, in case of large swings in financial markets, portfolio inertiafalls, and even more so when market go down. The propensity to inertia is influenced by savers’ age, the time, and the subscription date of the contract. Chapter 3 examines how household risky share vary with age. Weshow that the share of capital invested in unit-linked funds chosen by the investor declines steadily. Chapter 4analyses household participation in financial markets and the impact of the economic environment on portfoliochoice. We show that institutional factors encourage investment in real estate at the expense of risky assets. In addition to their economic environment, household portfolio choices are influenced by demographic andsocial factors

Are Betting Markets Efficient? Evidence from European Football Championships

This article investigates the degree of efficiency of the European Football online betting market by using odds quoted by 12 bookmakers on 21 European championships over 11 years. We show that systematically picking out odds inferior to a threshold delivers a rate of return of 4.45% if best odds are selected across bookmakers and 2.78% if mean odds are used. This amounts to backing overwhelmingly favourites whose probability of winning exceeds 90%. Our results only exploit information contained in odds, are robust to the use of real-time data and different sample periods and hold under risk neutrality and expected utility preferences for realistic degrees of risk aversion. Transaction costs reduce profitability but only for small stake bets

This dissertation focuses on the effect of population ageing on wealth inequality. The first article uses an OLG Model to assess the effect of the demographic transition in France on economic growth since the 19th century. It reconstructs female labour force participation in both the labour market and domestic production to get a better understanding of the key events leading to women’s progressive inclusion within the market economy. In addition, it performs an intergenerational analysis by cohort and gender, and challenges widespread theories on baby-boomers. Finally, it examines the evolution of lifetime income gender inequalities. The second article evaluates the effects of imputed rent taxation in France (a tax that was in force between 1914-1965) to restore wealth equity across and within generations. This is of particular importance in the current context of unprecedented rise of real estate market prices. Over the past two decades, homeowners have realised significant income gains, while younger generations have faced major difficulties to accumulate wealth. Finally, the third article uses a Difference-in Difference approach to assess the effects the Balladur Reform of 1993 and the Fillon Reform of 2003, two major recent pension reforms in France, on indebtedness among retirees. Results shed light on the characteristics of the retirees affected by each reform in terms of educational and financial background: underline that both reforms increased private debt levels among the low-educated and those not having financial difficulties at least once during the last five years. Moreover, a strong significance is found among privateworkers and aligned regimes having had structural debt during the last years

Notation efficace des questions à choix multiples

International audienceThis paper studies the optimal scoring of multiple choice tests in which the marks for wrong selections and omissions jointly minimize the mean square dierence between score and examinees' abilities. Examinees are loss averse and, as a result, reluctant to risk answers on the basis of their knowledge. I nd that it is ecient to incentivize the lowest able to omit, except when the test has a very large number of items. The mark for omission is positive when the test size is limited and negative when it is large. Loss aversion generally improves estimators eciency by spontaneously inducing more omission and thereby reducing the need to bias the mark upward to encourage omission. The model sheds light on the statistical properties of two widely used scoring methods, Number right scoring and Formula scoring.

Survivors' pensions in France : Pension wealth, pension reforms impacts and standard of living of pensioners

This thesis examines survivors’ pensions in France by focusing on the implicit patrimonial dimension of pension rights. Indeed, pension rights are a component of the wealth of insured persons, considered as an implicit saving also called Pension wealth (PW). After examining in Chapter 1 the wide heterogeneity of rules governing the openness and service of survivors’ pensions between schemes, as well as the logic underlying survivors’ pensions between the private and public sectors, we show, in Chapter 2, that calculated Pension wealth is higher on average in public sector schemes due to the higher qualifications of the spouses deceased in these schemes and the more favorable retirement benefit conditions. Moreover, inequality in the distribution of Pension wealth is smaller than that generally observed on the real wealth of households, but Pension wealth is distributed differently according to the previous sector of activity of the deceased spouse. On the other hand, several factors, other than the survivor’s pension, would explain the level of Pension wealth. In Chapter 3, we show that the increase in the duration of insurance caused by the 1993 and 2003 reforms has significantly reduced Pension wealth for derived pensioners right whose deceased spouse had validated at least 60 quarters of contribution, but was affected by thoses measures. Finally, in Chapter 4, we show that survivors’ schemes on average allow widows and widowers to maintain their standard of living prior to the death of their spouses, although there are differences depending on whether the deceased was a private sector executive, a non-executive wage earner or a civil servant of the State

With more than two million holders, the Plan d’Épargne Retraite Populaire (PERP), introduced in 2003, occupies a central position among French funded retirementsavings instruments. We examine its redistributive power by calculating the return on a PERP for standard situations that vary according to socio-occupational category, sex, and marginal tax bracket. We use the concept of internal rate of return (IRR), i. e., the discount rate at which the present value of total expected returns will match the total cost of the investment. The return gaps are wider between socio-occupational categories than between sexes. Among men, managers and higher-level intellectual occupations display a 0.9-point gap in returns with blue-collar workers. That translates into a difference of about 17% in annuities and tax savings for the two groups. The gap is narrower for women because of the smaller inequality in life expectancy. Other inequalities are due to the PERP tax regime, which exempts contributions from income tax while holders are economically active, then taxes annuities during retirement. It introduces yield gaps of up to 0.75 points between tax brackets. Tax gains do not rise in a linear profi le with income but fluctuate depending on whether or not holders move into a lower tax bracket on retirement. It is thus hard to characterize the impact of taxation as regressive or progressive. An alternative tax regime consisting in partial taxation of both contributions and annuities is more progressive but erodes the return— thereby reducing the attractiveness of saving for retirement. Direr Alexis.
