The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

This dissertation studies the application of the unbonded strand systems in isostatic and hiperstatic beams of building structures, in accordance with the recommendations of the NBR6118:2003 code. The main objectives are summarized in presenting, commenting and suggesting project criteria for sizing and verifying these beams, and, after that, applying these criteria to some examples of calculation. The initial part of the research brings a revision of the prestressing degrees concepts, with special emphasis in partial prestressing, as well as the simplified consideration of the losses as a constant force throughout the tendon. Moreover, the representation of the post-tensioning by external equivalent loads and the method of balanced loads are discribed in details. It´s presented a proposal for verification of the resistant capacity of sections in the ultimate limit state ULS through an iterative process in electronic spread sheet. The definitions of BR6118:2003 for serviceability limit states SLS verifications, as control of crack width and control of deformation, are analyzed and, afterward, compared with the recommendations of eurocode EN1992:2004 and American code ACI318:2002. The second part initiates with the detailed presentation of the procedures for ULS and SLS verification of a reinforced concrete, single supported beam which presents deflection beyond the allowed value. Later, it is added to that same beam unbonded strands to solve the deflection problem. The second example of application analyzes the important influence of columns and slabs in the distribution of the post-tensioning efforts in the structure. The last example shows the differences between the isostatics and hiperstatics efforts gotten with the continuous beam and plane frame models, and its influence in the ultimate and serviceability limit states of the beam in study. If constant losses are admitted and if the method of equivalent loads are used with elastic models, to size and to verify continuous beams with partial prestressing becomes a relatively simple task

Pragmatic Case Studies as a Source of Unity in Applied Psychology

To unify or not to unify applied psychology: that is the question. In this article we review pendulum swings in the historical efforts to answer this question—from a comprehensive, positivist, “top-down,” deductive yes between the 1930s and the early 60s, to a postmodern no since then. A rationale and proposal for a limited, “bottom-up,” inductive yes in applied psychology is then presented, employing a case-based paradigm that integrates both positivist and postmodern themes and components. This paradigm is labeled “pragmatic psychology” and, its specific use of case studies, the “Pragmatic Case Study Method” (“PCS Method”). We call for the creation of peer-reviewed journal-databases of pragmatic case studies as a foundational source of unifying applied knowledge in our discipline. As one example, the potential of the PCS Method for unifying different angles of theoretical regard is illustrated in an area of applied psychology, psychotherapy, via the case of Mrs. B. The article then turns to the broader historical and epistemological arguments for the unifying nature of the PCS Method in both applied and basic psychology.Peer reviewe

Supernumerary chromosomes or Bs are additional dispensable elements that are present in some individuals in a given population of a given species. So far, they were estimated to be present in more than 15% of eukaryotes, including plants, fungi and animals. One of the main characteristics of Bs is that they do not recombine with the A complement, evolving independently of the rest of the genome. They also can accumulate along generations by not well-known evolutionary forces as results of drive by distortion of the normal Mendelian inheritance pattern. A very common feature for the B chromosomes is their heterochromatinization and accumulation of repetitive DNAs, which account for its evolution and differentiation in comparison to A complement. Functional genes mainly associated with division and chromosome regulation were also documented. Despite orthopterans present large number of species harboring B chromosomes, studies with recent approaches using the integration between genomic sequencing and physical chromosome mapping for better understanding about origin, composition, evolution and behavior are concentrated primarily on a few species. Here, our goal was to elucidate the molecular composition and possible ancestry of B chromosomes in different Neotropical grasshoppers, with an extension to understand the populational dynamics of the B chromosome of Abracris flavolineata. The present work had basically three main steps presented in three manuscripts. The first one, by satDNAs analysis, we provided support for intraspecific origin of the B chromosome of Rhammatocerus brasiliensis, Schistocerca rubiginosa and Xyleus discoideus angulatus, from small chromosomes, which appears to be a common feature for this group. The second chapter presented the uncommon euchromatic B chromosome of A. flavolineata that differentially to other Bs could be a young element, not enriched with repetitive DNA, showing Cnegative pattern and high resemblance with the A complement. These results obtained by genomic sequencing, bioinformatics and chromosome mapping, suggests an intraspecific origin of the B chromosome from L1 pair, probably passing through misdivision and isochromosome formation. Finally, in the third chapter two more Bs were found on A. flavolineata populations with different frequency and highly differentiated in composition. The evidences gathered by repeatome analysis reinforced that the Bs are young but in different stages of heterochromatinization, mainly due to intense amplification of satDNA repeats, as for the B from Argentina population. The B variant from Cabo/PE population presented more resemblance to the variant from Rio Claro/SP than to from Posadas/ARG. Moreover, the unique origin of the B variants of A. flavolineata populations is discussed.Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)CAPES: 001.FAPESP: 2011/19481-3.CNPq: 475308/2011-5.FAPESP: 2015/16661-1

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
