The role of secure attachment in promoting resilience among orphans
Abstract : Background: A number of children in South Africa grow up without one or both biological parents. The resilience of these children is threatened since they are exposed to many risks that interfere with their development. In other words, parental mortality limits the resources and capacities of families to create environments that enable children to develop well. Little is known about the processes that enable these orphaned children to cope resiliently. Aims: The major aim of this study was to establish the role which secure attachment plays in promoting resilience among orphan children (n=20; 8 black males and 12 black females). The sampling procedure used was a non-probability sampling called purposive sampling. In this type of sampling only elements that are relevant to the research purpose are included in the sample. Method: Three data collection methods were used. First, individual interviews were used to collect verbal data from the orphaned children. Secondly, focus group interviews were utilised to elicit more data from orphaned children who did not participate in the individual interviews. The individual interviews and focus group interviews were coded and grouped. Finally, the drawandwrite technique was used to collect more data. The participants were asked to make drawings of what enabled them to cope resiliently and to write short narratives explaining their drawings. The drawings were grouped according to major themes. Data Analysis: A content analysis of the drawings and narratives was also conducted. Three major themes emerged from the data, namely, spirituality, religion and faith; connection to others ( caregiver, social worker, peers, family members, pastors and teachers) and individual strengths (having a sense of humour, perseverance, having a sense of independence, having future hopes and dreams. These findings have implications for theory and practice. It is important to incorporate programmes into school curricula to provide these children with strategies and skills to deal with adversity. Also, clear policies at all iv levels of education be part in place in order to guide the teachers in South Africa by providing adequate support to the orphans.M.Ed. (Educational Psychology
On the crossroads: Gender and career-transitioning experiences of a young transgender employee
Background: Research in gender and sexuality studies focuses on the experiences of LGBTQI communities and how they are discriminated against in societies. Research on career transitioning has focused on how employees navigate their world of work, with fewer studies focusing on career transitioning with transgender employees in the workplace.
Objectives: This article aims to provide a unique perspective by delving into the career transition journey of a young transgender male-to-female employee. By exploring her experiences in the workplace, I hope to shed light on the challenges and triumphs of her journey.
Method: This article presents a qualitative, phenomenological case study exploring the lived experiences of Angel (pseudonym), a young transgender employee at an educational space, as she navigates gender identity and career transition crossroads. The study employed a face-to-face semi-structured interview as a data collection method.
Results: This article shows how Angel struggled to find and become herself in the workplace while navigating her gender and career transition. It demonstrates her lived experiences, the multiple faces of gender and career transitioning, and her journey of being at the workplace.
Conclusion: The findings reveal significant challenges faced by transgender employees, including discrimination, microaggressions, and systemic barriers. Training about transgender people and workplace inclusivity should be a strategic priority for organisations.
Contribution: This case study contributes to our understanding of the complex intersections between gender transition and career development, highlighting unique challenges faced by transgender employees through discrimination, identity navigation, and systemic barriers. These insights can inform inclusive workplace policies and practices

Empowering learners using active learning in higher education institutions
Abstract: Higher education institutions are expected to produce skillful, problem solver, and competent graduates. This becomes possible when the instructors are using the appropriate teaching methodology and the learners are active and empowered in the teachinglearning process. In relation to this, constructivism theory emphasized that the learner is the center of the learning and the instructors playing an advising and facilitating role. In the teaching-learning process, when the learners are empowered using the appropriate teaching methodology, they feel a sense of confidence, capability, competence, and self-esteem, enabling them to meet life’s challenges more effectively. Therefore, a shift in theory (education theory) to a more student-centered approach using active learning is recommended because this approach has its own role to make the students creative and competent in their study. Thus, this chapter of a book tried to address the contribution of active learning in the empowerment of learners in higher education institutions
Modular/Block teaching : practices and challenges at Higher Education Institutions of Ethiopia
Abstract: The purpose of the study was to investigate the practices and challenges of modular/block teaching in higher education institutions of Ethiopia. A descriptive survey design was used with instructors and students. Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used to gather data and analysed quantitatively (descriptive and inferential statistics) and qualitatively (thematic analysis). The results showed variations in practice across different universities. It was found that modular/block teaching helps students to concentrate on one subject at a time but does not place emphasis on practical skills; this means that the theory and practice of the theory stay separate, which does not make learning credible. Additionally, it was found that due to the limited time given for one course, it was difficult to implement active learning. Generally, instructors and students faced challenges in the practice of modular/block teaching. Practically, the authors have made suggestions for the better implementation of modular/block teaching
Facebook as an instrument to enhance the career construction journeys of adolescent learners
Globally, the effects of Facebook® as a social media instrument are far-reaching for all, but more so for the 21st-century adolescent. Although most adolescents spend time on Facebook, this form of social media is inadequately used to enhance their teaching, learning and counselling experiences. Schools increasingly use Facebook for social engagement, or as a form of communication to parents and learners, thereby treating it as a notice board rather than an instrument for enhancing learning and development. While Facebook is used in the health and business sectors, few studies have explored the use of Facebook as an instrument for career development. Using a qualitative multiple case study design, this article explores the use of Facebook as an instrument that can enhance the career construction journeys of adolescent learners. Findings suggest that Facebook can contribute to career construction journeys. This study identified themes that are consistent with other career assessment instruments, such as the Career Interest Profile (CIP) and the Jung Personality Questionnaire (JPQ). The information found in Facebook profiles and statuses can be used as supplementary tools to identify alternative career narratives. Keywords: adolescents; career construction; career counselling; Facebook; social medi

School-Related Irrational Beliefs as Predictor of Academic Motivation Among Secondary School Learners
Learners' thoughts are important for academic motivation and learning in secondary schools. Specifically, this study aims to determine the extent to which school-related irrational beliefs influence academic motivation among secondary school students. Using a multi-stage random sampling technique, 740 secondary school students of both genders were selected as a sample: 303 boys and 437 girls. The Irrational Beliefs Inventory (IBI) and the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) were used for data collection. In order to answer research questions, mean scores, standard deviations, and Pearson product moment correlation analysis were used while the hypotheses were tested using regression analysis at 0.05 level of significance. A statistically significant relationship was found between irrational beliefs and academic motivation among secondary school learners. A key recommendation of the study is that secondary school psychologists should teach learners on the adverse impact of irrational beliefs
Conflict in J.M. Ntsime's drama-text "Pelo e ja Serati"
Thesis (MA)--PU for CHE, 1999The aim of this study is to investigate conflict as a literary technique in general, and in J. M. Ntsime's play, Pelo e ja Serati, in particular. The discussion will focus on the structural causes and the effect of conflict in drama.
The study comprises seven chapters. The aim, scope and methods of research are
outlined and motivated in chapter one. The second chapter provides background about Ntsime's text. This mise en scene includes a plot summary, discussion of the genre of the play as well as information about the cast of characters. The chapter further considers some of the aspects upon which conflict relies, including characterisation, naming and setting. The third chapter offers some theoretical perspectives on conflict in general. These serve to determine the nature of conflict and its importance in drama.
Chapter four deals with the structural analysis of conflict in Pelo e ja Serati. Emphasis is placed on the internal structure of conflict, to demonstrate its vital role in the development of dramatic action, from the beginning of the play through to its conclusion. Chapter five explores the relationship between dialogue and conflict in the play. It explores the ways in which dialogue develops and sustains conflict,
Chapter six focuses on the style of the author. It discusses general stylistic
techniques, including poetic language, imagery, proverbs and idioms. Particular
attention was given to the use of these devices in Pelo e ja Serati and the manner
in which they develop and sustain the conflict. Chapter seven revisits the main points of the study. By way of conclusion, I argued that the moral and ethical lessons portrayed by Ntsime in Pelo e ja Serati remain relevant to today's reader/audience.Master
