Rationality and pluralism: the selected works of Windy Dryden
Leading psychologist, lecturer, and author Windy Dryden has compiled his most valuable writings on Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy from the last thirty five years. This collection reveals the thinking, concepts and practical experience that have made Dryden one of the most respected and cited REBT authorities of our time. Dryden has authored or edited over 195 books and established Europe's first Masters in REBT. While his primary allegiance remains with REBT, he has published extensively on CBT and the wider issues of psychotherapy. Dryden's pluralistic perspective on REBT comes through in such seminal pieces as: The therapeutic alliance in rational-emotive individual therapy Compromises in rational-emotive therapy Adapting CBT to a broad clientele Unconditional self-acceptance and self-compassio
Strange, but rational
In this title, highly respected author, Windy Dryden, discusses some of the ideas that are central to the theory underpinning rational emotive behaviour therapy (REBT). Founded in 1955 by Albert Ellis (1913-2007) and developed in the intervening years, REBT was the first approach to be created within what is now known as the cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) tradition
Windy City Opera's La Bohème: A Case Study of Producing Micro-Opera in Chicago
abstract: This research paper recounts the work done in founding an opera company and putting on its inaugural show. It also provides some of the insights acquired during the process, which may be helpful for other future opera producers in creating a framework and guideposts for starting their own companies. The paper consists of two main sections followed by several short appendices.
The first section methodically reconstructs the process by which Windy City Opera's La Bohème was brought to the stage. It covers the background experiences that prompted the author to found her own company, the research and decisions involved, and the interplay between the company's overall goals and the resources available for a first production. The business, casting, rehearsing, and marketing aspects are reviewed in detail, as well as several mistakes that were made during the process that afforded valuable learning opportunities.
The second section follows up on these and other opportunities by sketching an ideal plan that opera startups might follow; the principal topics are timeline, budgeting, fundraising, venue selection, personnel selection, and marketing.
The appendices consist of worksheets and materials meant to illustrate and supplement this written how-to guide, as well as a video of the Windy City Opera production of La Bohème.Dissertation/ThesisAppendix B - Budget WorksheetAppendix C - Artist Contract TemplateAppendix M - La Bohème - VideoDoctoral Dissertation Music 201
Improvement of cooling tower efficiency under windy conditions
The investigation is concerned with the cooling towers of thermal power stations as water coolers. The purpose of the work is to develop the devices improving the efficiency of cooling towers under windy conditions. The author has carried out experimental investigations in a wind tunnel and full-scale tests at existing cooling towers of thermal power stations using modern methods of measurement and control. The author has developed the refined modelling procedure, has performed the investigation of the process of effect of the wind flow on the air ascending current from the cooling tower at two-metre-high large-scale models set inside the natural wind flow and 0,5-m high models in a wind tunnel. The author has developed the devices arranged above the upper section of the cooling tower and air duct area improving the cooling tower efficiency under windy conditions. Data-driven optimal control for safe quadrotor navigation in windy environments
Creating autonomous Micro Aerial Vehicles for executing complex missions poses various challenges, including safe navigation in the presence of external wind disturbances. Most current navigation methods handle external wind disturbances through real-time estimation and rejection algorithms in the control stage, but lack safety guarantees in strong winds. Recent robust methods provide safety guarantees but can be overly conservative. With the availability of more powerful computing devices, data-driven control algorithms are becoming increasingly feasible. Combining Gaussian Process models with Model Predictive Control has shown to enhance safety and performance in various control applications. Moreover, Model Predictive Control has been extended to solve more complex optimization algorithms that combine trajectory generation and tracking, preventing reference trajectories that are risky and challenging to control in the presence of disturbances. This research aims to improve quadrotor navigation in windy environments by using Gaussian Processes to model wind disturbances. The Gaussian Process model is integrated with a Model Predictive Contouring Control formulation that combines trajectory generation and control into one optimization problem. A nominal model of the quadrotor is derived and the Gaussian Process disturbance model is trained with the quadrotor position as input and wind disturbance as output. The wind disturbance map, along with the nominal model, is implemented in the Model Predictive Contouring Controller to consider both the mean and uncertainty of the resulting probabilistic model. This study validates the use of Gaussian Processes to model complex wind disturbances in quadrotor navigation. The wind disturbance map is trained from available state information, with data collected using an optimal exploration design to minimize uncertainty and reduce exploration times. The hyperparameters involved in training the Gaussian Process model are discussed and the implementation of sparse Gaussian Processes is outlined to make it real-time feasible for the Model Predictive Contouring Control formulation. Including the prediction model by incorporating chance constraints results in improved tracking and increased robustness in cluttered environments compared to the nominal Model Predictive Contouring Control formulation. The proposed algorithm is shown to outperform state-of-the-art methods for safe quadrotor navigation in windy and cluttered environments, being able to handle more complex wind fields than existing methods while also being less conservative.Mechanical Engineering | Systems and Contro
Turning motion of a ship with single CPP and single rudder during stopping maneuver under windy condition
This paper describes the results of experimental and simulation studies that aimed at investigating the characteristics of the stopping motion of a ship with a single controllable pitch propeller (CPP) and single rudder. In a full-scale experiment, stopping tests were performed to compare the stopping motion between CPP ships and that of fixed pitch propeller (FPP) ships and the turning motion of a CPP ship was found to be less stable than that of a FPP ship, particularly under windy condition. A simulation study was also conducted to investigate the effect of wind on the stopping motion of CPP ships by which it can be proved that CPP ships are forced to turn her head windward and to drift leeward considerably under beam or quarter wind conditions. Based on the results of these full-scale and simulation studies, a method can be proposed to estimate the critical range of stopping maneuver without tug assistance and effective stopping maneuver for berthing and anchoring under windy condition
Coupled analysis of unsteady aerodynamics and vehicle motion of a road vehicle in windy conditions
The two-way coupling of full-scale vehicle motion and the surrounding turbulence motion has been realized on a developed unsteady aerodynamic simulator for a road vehicle. A large-eddy simulation (LES) technique has been applied to reproduce the unsteady turbulence motion, and an unstructured finite volume method has been adopted to explain the complicated geometry of a full-scale road vehicle. Three-degree-of-freedom equations of the vehicle's dynamic motion are incorporated into the developed LES code, and the motion is numerically reproduced by coupling the arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) method and Navier-Stokes equations in a non-inertial reference frame. The simulation code is implemented on a massively parallel processor to meet the demands of the large-scale, long-term aerodynamic simulations of full-scale road vehicles. As a typical application of the coupled analysis, an unsteady aerodynamics simulation of a simplified heavy-duty truck in windy conditions is demonstrated, and the effects of the unsteady aerodynamics on the truck's motion are investigated. The obtained results are compared with the results of a conventional quasi-steady analysis, and certain differences in the vehicle path and the yaw angle are identified. The effects of the transitional aerodynamics on variables related to driver's perception are significant. These results clearly indicate the importance of estimating the unsteady aerodynamic forces in a vehicle motion analysis. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
Nautical traffic simulation with multi-agent system
This paper describes a microscopic nautical traffic simulation model based on multi-agent system. The ship traffic is produced from the behavior of autonomous agents that represent ships. Especially, we look at the behaviors for collision avoidance in different encountering situations with different local environmental conditions. The behavior of the ships is simulated with a dynamic ship maneuvering model, taking into account the movements in different local circumstances. And we utilize AIS data for input in simulation, model validation, and model verification. Moreover, we use the ODD (Overview, Design concepts, Details) protocol as a framework for the detailed description of the model.Hydraulic EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience
