A New Book on Mao: A Quick Q & A with Author Rebecca Karl
Rebecca Karl, who teaches at New York University and is known in Chinese studies circles as the author of important studies of nationalism during the final years of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) and the development of Marxist thought between the 1920s and the present, has a new book coming out soon. Titled Mao Zedong and China in the Twentieth-Century World: A Concise History, it’s being published (simultaneously in paperback and hardback editions) by Duke University Press. The publisher promises that it will provide readers with a “lively and concise historical account of Mao Zedong’s life and thought,” and it comes with advance praise from Stanford literary specialist Ban Wang and historian Delia Davin, whose many publications also include a short book about the Chinese Communist Party leader. Struck by the challenges Professor Karl has taken on, both of moving from writing for specialists to writing for general readers (that’s clearly the main target audience to her new book) and trying to cover such a big topic in a small number of pages (the book has just over 200 of them), I asked her to share her thoughts on these challenges and other subjects with followers of this blog
Rebecca Avery letter, Memphis, 1846
Letter from Rebecca Avery and other members of her family at Memphis, Tennessee, to her daughter Amanda A. Avery, c/o Mrs. Holcolm, La Grange, Tennessee, written on November 13, 1846. The other family members include Amanda\u27s sister Cornelia Estelle, an unidentifiable author and cousin Bob. Rebecca Avery notes how tired she is with her six student lodgers and two day boarders. “I hope you will catch a smart beau, for I want you all married.” Estelle (Stella) complains of a cough and wonders if it is consumption. Says she is tired looking after the boarders also. The unidentifiable writer notes that “poverty is a most niggardly rascally tormenting pestiferous scamp of a thing – that sticks tighter and bites harder than a thousand musketoes in a Mississippi swamp could possibly do.” Amanda Avery (1828-1916) was the daughter of Nathan Avery (1792-1846), a physician born in Lebanon, New York, who practiced in Bolivar and Memphis, and Rebecca Jones Rivers (1793-1847), whom he married in Montgomery County, Tennessee, in 1818. Their children included: William Thomas (1819-1880), Elizabeth Edmunds (1824-1916, who married Minor Meriwether), and Cornelia Estelle (1830-1919). Amanda married Nathaniel Macon Trezevant (1829-1912), a lawyer, in 1848.https://digitalcommons.memphis.edu/speccoll-mss-shelbycountytn2/1045/thumbnail.jp
Transcending boundaries: rethinking gender roles and sexual norms through transnational discourse in the literature, art, and social activism of Kindai Tokyo and bohemian New York, 1899-1932
This thesis uncovers and explores a transnational dialogue between moderns in New York and Tokyo in the early twentieth century through which intellectuals, writers, and activists explored their ideal social and sexual relationships in a rapidly changing and globalizing world. I argue that larger worldwide political and economic changes, in particular, Imperialism, commercialism, urbanism, and the first World War ultimately created then shaped the dialogue from one focused on exploring interracial relationships through art and literature in the first decade of the twentieth century to one centered around feminism, Neo-Malthusianism, and birth control activism by the 1920’s. However, the issue of increased female independence remained constant. By analyzing the roles of New York City and of Tokyo, of America and Japan, as constructed spaces that opened a set of possibilities for men and women in the early twentieth century and by situating writers Nagai Kafu and Winnifred Eaton, and social activists Shizue Ishimoto and Margaret Sanger as participants and cultural interpreters, this thesis illuminates how the transcendent intellectual boundaries of cities during this first period of globalization invited a re-examining of gender roles and social and sexual relationships in two cities portrayed as historically unconnected. This thesis employs the larger goal of breaking down the Orientalist binary between East and West by demonstrating that Tokyo intellectuals, artists and social critics were involved in a dialogue concerning non-normative gender roles and relationships usually only attributed to denizens of transatlantic cities like New York, London, and Paris.M.A.Includes bibliographical referencesIncludes vitaby Rebecca Hal

Rebecca Roanhorse: A mythogothic reading of Harvest
Rebecca Roanhorse’s short story Harvest appeared in the 2019 New Suns: A Collection of Stories by People of Color edited by Nisi Shawl. This story has received little to no critical attention. Roanhorse’s story is marked by its recourse to the figure of Deer Woman, a supernatural being common to many stories from Native American oral tradition. In this article, I will explore how myth and the gothic are melded together within the narrative of this short story in what I term the ‘mythogothic’. I will demonstrate how the mythogothic is integral to the founding of the shadow selves of the Native American protagonist Tansi. It is Roanhorse’s depiction of Tansi and Deer Woman’s killing spree that I will maintain challenges the founding myths of North American colonialism.
Contribution: This study contributes to scholarship on the work of author Rebecca Roanhorse and her employment of Native American oral tradition and myth as central to her narratives. It further provides a contribution to Gothic studies in the coining of the term the mythogothic as a tool with which to engage in a critical reading of narratives in which myth acts as a structuring device. Roanhorse’s short story Harvest has received little scholarly attention and using a gothic theoretical approach in conjunction with Native American scholar Gerald Vizenor’s trickster discourse allows for a fresh perspective and critical appreciation of the terror central to the story’s subversion of American colonial myth
The connection between the ESG rating and value creation : A study of listed companies between a Swedish and Norwegain context.
Handledare: Jan Svanberg. Datum: 2022 - Januari. Title: The connection between the ESG rating and value creation – a study of listed companies between a Swedish and Norwegain context. Level: Student thesis, final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration. Author: Robbie Afram Chamun och Rebecca Sundholm. Supervisor: Jan Svanberg. Date: 2022 - January. Aim: The interest in companies´ sustainability work has led to their valuation also being based on this phenomenon. A measure for sustainability as a basis to evaluate the companies´ CSR is the ESG score. By examining the connection between the ESG score and the companies’ value creation, from partly a Swedish context and partly a Norwegian one, studies are intended to show whether the connection exists. Furthermore, the study shows whether this connection differs between two contexts with different degrees of regulation. The purpose of the studies is therefore to investigate the connection between the ESG score and value creation for Swedish and Norwegian listed companies. Method: The research is based on a positivist research philosophy with a deductive approach and a quantitative research method. The execution of a longitudinal design meant that the research collected data from 68 companies over a period of 7 years. The data was collected from Refinitiv Eikon and was analyzed through the statistical programme SPSS. Result & Conclusion: The results of the study show that no significant connection between the ESG score and the companies' value creation exists. The study confirms that companies from a Swedish context receive higher ESG ratings than companies from a Norwegian one. Contribution of the thesis: By comparing Swedish and Norwegian public listed companies, the study has helped to fill the gap around the ESG score´s impact on companies´ value creation for these countries. The results of this study could not state that the ESG scores alone significantly affects the companies' value creation. Suggestions for future research: Future research should address how value creation is affected in the absence of ESG score. Key words: CSR disclosure, Value Creation, ESG, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
Title: The customer is always right, right? A quantitative study of the power imbalance in the real estate industry. Level: Final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration Author: Julia Häggström and Rebecca Odhe Supervisor: Jonas Molin Date: 2022 - June Aim: The purpose of this study is to examine the customer meeting in the real estate industry from a power perspective with regard to verbal, physical and sexual customer aggression. Furthermore, it will be investigated who is exposed to customer aggression with regard to gender, age, industry experience and salary system. Method: The study is of a quantitative nature and is characterized by a deductive approach. The data was collected by a web-based survey sent to 2 533 Swedish real estate agents, which was answered by a total of 198 respondents. The analyzes were performed in JASP, which consists of descriptive-, correlation-, factor- and network analysis. Results and conclusion: Of the results, two hypotheses were confirmed and three were rejected. The study states that customer aggressions are not due to a power imbalance in the business relationship. Women, young people and real estate agents with a shorter industry experience tend to experience that their salary system contributes to a power imbalance. Sweden's real estate industry is covered by multiple occasions or situations where customer aggression occurs. Women and younger people believe that they are particularly vulnerable due to their gender or age. It can also be stated that younger real estate agents are the ones who are most exposed to sexual customer aggression. Contribution of the thesis: This study contributes to newly developed knowledge about Swedish real estate agents' exposure to customers' aggressive and violent behavior. By making this problem visible, the thesis can also provide managers and supervisors with guidelines for what preventive measures may be needed and how these should be designed. Suggestions for future research: Suggestions for further research are to investigate the consequences from being exposed to customer aggression and the causes of aggressive customer behavior. In addition to this, great advantages are also seen with such a survey for educational purposes. Finally, it would be interesting to apply the Big Five to investigate if certain personality traits feel more vulnerable
The Sangamo Journal\u27s Rebecca and the Democratic Pets : Abraham Lincoln\u27s Interaction with Mormonism
It was not unusual for the Sangamo Journal, printed in Spring field Illinois, to comment on the Mormons during the 1840s: 137 articles mentioned the topic during the decade. What makes the September 2, 1842, issue of the Sangamo Journal notable was not its criticism of the Mormons, but rather the authorship of one of its editorials. Rebecca, who identified herself a farming widow in the county, expressed her discontent with the evil course of affairs in Il linois. Rebecca sarcastically remarked, A pretty mess they [the Democrats] have made of it. . . . This State Bank of Illinois will never become prosperous until the Whig party are in power. And look at the Mormons—\u27Democratic pets! A few days later, Rebecca sneered, \u27 This plan of securing gold for office holders\u27—was a trick, undoubtedly arranged before the election; even the Mormon votes could not have moved the party. When Rebecca\u27s additional sarcastic editorials resulted in an offended party\u27s challenging the alleged widow to a duel, Abraham Lincoln claimed author ship of the second letter: I did write the \u27Lost Township\u27 letter [by Rebecca ] which appeared in the Journal of the 2d inst
"Black Lamb and Grey Falcon" : remarks on the Balkan peregrinations of Rebecca West
West w ciągu kilku dziesięcioleci swej twórczości wielokrotnie zajmowała wyraziste stanowisko w fundamentalnie ważnych kwestiach – jako nastolatka broniła praw kobiet i potępiała kapitalistów, by w latach czterdziestych piętnować zdrajców, w kolejnej dekadzie komunistów, a w latach osiemdziesiątych zwolenników apartheidu. Black
This article is devoted to Rebecca West, who, as a fierce feminist and at the same time a literary critic, novelist, essayist, playwright, poet, biographer, reporter, political correspondent and author of wonderful letters, is still relatively unknown in Poland. Over the decades of her writing, West repeatedly took a strong stance on fundamentally important issues – as a teenager she defended women’s rights and condemned capitalists, to denounce traitors in the 1940s, communists in the next decade, and supporters of apartheid in the 1980s. Rebecca West’s Black Lamb and Grey Falcon is a masterpiece of travel reportage in which reference to history, descriptions of places, and characterizations of characters are bound together by the thread of the author’s personal experiences. In two extensive volumes, one of the most talented and insightful British female journalists of the twentieth century not only expanded and intensified the genre pattern of the travel book but also achieved a kind of apotheosis of the form. She was a writer who – as early as the 1930s – exposed harmful stereotypes, denounced the attempts of Western powers to paternalistically appropriate Europe, and thus sought to redraw the cultural map of the continent
