Assessment of forest roads and art structures in terms of flood risk with the help of GIS (A case study from Tutunculer Forest Enterprise, Artvin)
In this study conducted for the evaluation of forest road and art structures with the help of Geographical Information Systems; The existing forest roads, dry and irrigated streams and the art structures built on these roads in the area within the boundaries of OİŞ were determined and processed on the digital land model. Forest road and art structures on digital terrain model; The distribution in the rivers and dry streams, the distribution according to the land slope classes, the distribution according to the northern and southern views and their distribution according to the increase in height are examined. After the distributions on the digital terrain model were analyzed with ArcGIS software, a hydraulic flood model was developed to analyze the study areas in terms of flood. Hydraulic model study was performed by using Hec-RAS software. Using cross-section data, creek and road routes within the boundaries of our work area Tütüncüler OİŞ were defined and cross-sectional profiles were created for each region. The first step of the geometric data entry process was completed by entering the roughness manning coefficient, stable current values, flow rate and hydrological values by taking into account the topographic, rainfall and forest functions of each region. As the second step, the characteristic data of the existing art structures were entered on the sections and water surface profiles were obtained. Water surface profiles were obtained and hydraulic flood model was completed. The flood model created with the Hec-RAS software was run to determine whether the existing forest road and the art structures on it are sufficient for flood risk. As a result of flood analysis; In the first region, 18 art structures were sufficient, 8 of them were insufficient, in the second region 17 art structures were sufficient, in the third region 6 art structures were sufficient and in the fourth region, 9 art structures were sufficient and 1 of them was inadequate. In addition, suggestions were made for the re-planning of the art structures according to the formed water surface profile
Effects of homocysteine on adipocyte differentiation and CD36 gene expression in 3T3-L1 adipocytes
Demir, Selim/0000-0002-1863-6280The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of homocysteine (Hcy), a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, stroke and obesity, on expression of CD36 that regulates uptake of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL) by adipocytes and differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells to adipocytes. Cell viability was determined using MTT assay, and density of triglycerides were measured with Oil Red O staining. the expression levels of CD36 were analyzed using SYBR green assay by quantitative RT-PCR. Our results showed that the addition of Hcy inhibited differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes in a dose-dependent manner without a significant cell toxicity (p 0.05) compared to differentiated adipocytes. Hcy reduced adipocyte differentiation, but had no effect on the expression level of CD36 in vitro conditions. the effect of Hcy on uptake and clearance of Ox-LDL by adipose tissue now needs to be investigated in vivo.Karadeniz Technical University Research FundThis study was supported by the Karadeniz Technical University Research Fund
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Circulating parameters of oxidative stress and hypoxia in normal pregnancy and HELLP syndrome
Demir, Selim/0000-0002-1863-6280Background. the HELLP syndrome (Hemolysis, Elevated Liver enzymes and Low Platelets) is a complication of severe pre-eclampsia, a condition characterized by oxidative stress elevation caused by disequilibrium between lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defense mechanisms, which, in turn, results in endothelial compromise and free radical-mediated cell damage. While several studies have examined the relationship between pre-eclampsia and oxidative stress, research investigating oxidative and hypoxic status in HELLP syndrome is limited. Objectives. the aim of this study was to compare the levels of oxidative stress markers - total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), oxidative stress index (OSI), and malondialdehyde (MDA) - and a hypoxia marker- carbonic anhydrase IX (CA IX) - in patients with HELLP syndrome and in healthy pregnant women. Material and methods. A total of 23 women with HELLP syndrome and 30 healthy pregnant women were included in the study. Serum levels of oxidative stress markers were determined using colorimetric methods, while serum levels of CA IX were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. Results. the TOS, OSI, MDA, and CA IX levels were significantly higher in women with HELLP syndrome than in the controls (p = 0.0001, p = 0.0001, p = 0.0001, and p = 0.008, respectively). Conclusions. Increased levels of oxidative stress and hypoxia markers in women with HELLP syndrome suggest that oxidative stress and hypoxia may be significantly involved in the pathophysiology of the disease. Furtherfollow-up studies are now needed to investigate the prognostic roles of these parameters in patients with HELLP syndrome
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
