An Author Profiling Approach Based on Language-dependent Content and Stylometric Features

    No full text
We describe the approach that we submitted to the 2015 PAN competition for the author profiling task. The task consists in predicting some attributes of an author analyzing a set of his/her Twitter tweets. We consider several sets of stylometric and content features, and different decision algorithms: we use a different combination of features and decision algorithm for each language-attribute pair, hence treating it as an individual problem

Italian influences at the court of James VI: the case of William Fowler

    No full text
In this essay the author analyses the role of William Fowler, intellectual, translator, poet and spy, at the court of James VI of Scotland. In the early years of his reign, the King called at his court a literary coterie of Scottish and English writers, encouraging not only original and occasional compositions, but also literary translation. The essay shows that, while the King and most of his poetic followers showed a predilection for the translation of contemporary French works, Fowler turned his attention to Italian classic and contemporary works, translating Petrarch's Trionfi, Machiavelli's Prince, but also a number of minor works such as Giordano Bruno's sonnets or the Lamenti of musical tradition. The essay therefore re-locates Fowler's position in the Scottish early modern literary revival, and his role in Scoto-Italian cultural relations

Curation of the lichen and bryophyte collection in the Ronald L. Jones herbarium

Lichens and bryophytes are often considered ‘cryptograms’, which are organisms that are difficult to identify by morphology alone. They are also difficult to curate in traditional herbaria as they are often not pressed into a two-dimensional format as other plants are. This project developed a method to curate the lichen and bryophyte collections in the Ronald L. Jones (EKY) herbarium, which is the largest repository of scientifically documented plants in the state. This is a great scientific resource for local botanists and international botanists that seek to observe properly curated and imaged records or use occurrences in their scientific research and conservation practices. In the EKY herbarium, many ‘cryptograms’ are in need of curation. This project helped address these needs by inventorying the cryptograms, testing a newly developed mounting protocol, and integrating into the SERNEC database to share these collections globally

Currently, the dental educational model brings the perspective of the balance between technical excellence and social relevance. It is supported by dialogical strategies and interactive methodologies in an active teaching-learning process. The teacher is considered a facilitator of the process of knowledge construction. Among the methods of teaching and learning, there are those that are based on information and communication technologies (ICT) as a new possibility to education developing new skills, such as: ability to face the new, creativity, autonomy and communication. Within this context this research which aims to demonstrate the path of building an application to studying the determinants of dental caries and its operational characteristics, and demonstrate the use of ICT as tools to support the teaching-learning process in dentistry. The application was developed by an interdisciplinary work, which was attended by Dentistry, Information Systems and Design professionals. Dentistry researchers provided the theoretical framework that oriented the rules for the application development. The professionals in the areas of Information Systems and Design have coded the system using technologies with CSS HTML and Java to the structural development of the pages, Java Script for the interactivity and MySQL for the database. The application was used by students from the 3rdd year of the Federal University of Santa Catarina Dental School, in a Public Oral Health course, in the context of an elementary school. Its use was reported by a qualitative study with the dental students. Data collection was conducted through the focus group technique and data analysis was carried out following the Content Analysis statements, utilizing NVivo 9.0® software. The results showed the advantages of using ICTs in dental education as basic tools and facilitators of teaching-learning process. It was revealed the importance and the potential of the ICT's use to face the demands of constant advances of technology and the fast expansion of scientific knowledge

Interferenze sistemiche: letteratura e sistema letterario nel romanzo tedesco contemporaneo

Since the beginning of the new millennium it has become increasingly common to find fictional works, especially in prose, having the literary system – that’s is, the set of mechanisms, functions and people underpinning the production, distribution and communication of literature – as a main theme. In the German speaking area this particular type of narrative has assumed the name of Literaturbetriebsroman (novel of the literary system). Texts that are part of this new literary genre do not restrain themselves to a mere of the author representation, but rather, they highlight and elaborate, through the literary medium, a real interference, or to use Niklas Luhmann’s terminology, an irritation between the system of literature and its environment. This essay aims to show how the contemporary Literaturbetriebsroman (since 2000) can be seen as a particular literary translation of the interference exerted by the literary system on its primary object, that’s to say literature. Using three novels (Tod eines Kritikers by M. Walser, Besteller by K. Modick and Tod in Turin by J. Brandt) it will also be shown which kind of interferences between literature and literary system are prone to be fictionalized and how literary works such as the Literaturbetriebsroman actually play an active role in the shaping of the literary field

Cognitive Biases and Gaze Direction: An Experimental Study

This paper investigates the validity of the model of dual processing by means of eyetracking methods. In this theoretical framework, gaze direction may be a revealing signal of how automatic detection is modified or sustained by controlled search. We performed an experiment by using a stylized decisional framework, i.e. informational cascade, proposed by economists to investigate the rationality of imitative behavior. Our main result is that automatic detection as revealed by gaze direction is driven by mechanisms that are dependent on cognitive biases. In particular, we find significant statistical correlation between subjects’ first fixation and their revealed patterns of choice. Our findings support the hypothesis that the process of automatic detection is not independent on cognitive processes.informational cascades, overconfidence, eye-tracking, information processing, cognitive biases

BUILDING INTERSUBJECTIVITY AT A DISTANCE DURING THE COLLABORATIVE WRITING OF FAIRYTAILS.

    No full text
This paper introduces intersubjectivity as a concept playing a crucial role in collaborative tasks, even when performed between partners at a distance. Two 5th grade classes from two European countries (Italy and Greece), collaborated in writing fairytales inspired by philosophically relevant issues. The software supporting the task is an asynchronous virtual environment. Videos recorded in the Italian class and materials posted on the platform were analyzed using qualitative approaches and discourse analysis. The case-study discussed shows how the construction of intersubjectivity at a distance is a complex process involving many aspects. The main results highlight how participants: (a) use the narrative structure as a pre-requisite to build an intersubjective space where partners representation plays an important role; (b) exploit to a high degree the intellectual reasoning needed to accomplish the task in a truly collaborative way; (b) attain a fine tuning of reflective and metacognitive skills fostering a genuine interdependency during the task. Within this process, computer mediation amplifies the partners ‘‘presence’’ all through the creative writing process, expanding [Bruner, J., 2002. Making stories: law, literature, life. Farrar Straus & Giroux] definition of writing as an activity where the ‘‘audience’’ plays a fundamental role as a ‘‘co-author’’

This book is the updated Spanish version of the work that its author published in 2015, in Naples, with Editorial Científica, prepared by Professor Gabrielle Fornasari and his disciple Alessandra Macillo, entitled Elementi di Filosofía giuridico-penale; it is in line with the lessons of the course that Professor Guzmán Dalbora gave in July 2013 at the Doctorate in Comparative and European Studies at the University of Trento.
