The popularity of smart mobile devices is growing every day. Censis-Ucsi Report on communication 2020 shows that in recent years tablets have doubled their circulation and are present in more than a quarter of Italian homes and in most cases the owners are families with children. Within this socio-technological scenario, parents find themselves experiencing a very delicate and complex choice, while on the one hand they buy mobile devices for the potential educational benefits at the same time they have little knowledge and few tools with which to evaluate the quality of applications. The choice of age-appropriate content is not sufficient to guarantee a qualitative selection of content itself. It is therefore necessary to have a standard recognized by the scientific community and an evaluation system capable of determining the quality and educational value of applications destinated for the childhood world

Resilience and successful community reintegration among female forensic psychiatric patients: a preliminary investigation

    No full text
Special Issue: Violent and Antisocial Behavior in WomenResearch on resiliency and recovery in forensic psychiatric patients is still limited. Information pertaining to factors associated with successful community reintegration would contribute to a more comprehensive assessment of functioning and informed treatment planning that fits within a recovery approach of service provision. Using a retrospective design involving file reviews and a 3-year follow-up period, the authors investigated the rate of successful/unsuccessful community reintegration (defined by the presence or absence of an absolute discharge/readmission to hospital) in female forensic psychiatric patients (N = 48). The study evaluated the extent to which the risk and protective factors captured in the Short-Term Assessment of Risk and Treatability (START) predicted a range of positive and negative outcomes in the study sample. Results showed that 47.9% of the women qualified as having successfully reintegrated into the community, with the remaining 52.1% qualifying as still being in recovery. Successful individuals possessed significantly more protective factors and significantly fewer risk factors than individuals still in recovery. Furthermore, both the vulnerability and the strength scale of the START demonstrated good predictive validity, however we did not find evidence of incremental validity of the strength scale. Background: NorthCape4000 (NC4000) is the most participated ultra-endurance cycling race. Eight healthy male Caucasian amateur cyclists were evaluated: (a) before starting the preparation period; (b) in the week preceding NC4000 (after the training period); (c) after NC4000 race, with the aim to identify the effects of ultra-cycling on body composition, aerobic capacity and biochemical parameters as well as on the differentiation of progenitor cells. Methods: Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) assessed body composition; cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) evaluated aerobic capacity. Differentiation of circulating progenitor cells was evaluated by analyzing the modulation in the expression of relevant transcription factors. In addition, in vitro experiments were performed to investigate the effects of sera of NC4000 participants on adipogenesis and myogenesis. The effects of NC4000 sera on Sestrins and Sirtuin modulation and the promotion of brown adipogenesis in progenitor cells was investigated as well. Two-tailed Student's paired-test was used to perform statistical analyses. Results: We observed fat mass decrease after training as well as after NC4000 performance; we also recorded that vitamin D and lipid profiles were affected by ultra-cycling. In addition, our findings demonstrated that post-NC4000 participant's pooled sera exerted a positive effect in stimulating myogenesis and in inducing brown adipogenesis in progenitor cells. Conclusions: The training program and Ultra-cycling lead to beneficial effects on body composition and biochemical lipid parameters, as well as changes in differentiation of progenitor cells, with significant increases in brown adipogenesis and in MYOD levels

Regulation of microRNAs in satellite cell renewal, muscle function, sarcopenia and the role of exercise

    No full text
Sarcopenia refers to a condition of progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and function associated with a higher risk of falls and fractures in older adults. Musculoskeletal aging leads to reduced muscle mass and strength, affecting the quality of life in elderly people. In recent years, several studies contributed to improve the knowledge of the pathophysiological alterations that lead to skeletal muscle dysfunction; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying sarcopenia are still not fully understood. Muscle development and homeostasis require a fine gene expression modulation by mechanisms in which microRNAs (miRNAs) play a crucial role. miRNAs modulate key steps of skeletal myogenesis including satellite cells renewal, skeletal muscle plasticity, and regeneration. Here, we provide an overview of the general aspects of muscle regeneration and miRNAs role in skeletal mass homeostasis and plasticity with a special interest in their expression in sarcopenia and skeletal muscle adaptation to exercise in the elderly

The word aesthetics comes from the Greek IO0NTKN or aisthesis and its mean-ing is tied to perception and also to the notion of what is sensitive or that which relates to sensitivity. When Baumgarten first used the word aesthetic in 1735, he described it as the science of beauty. In Courses in Aesthetics, pub-lished in 1835, Hegel describes his philosophy of art, the science of beauty, and more specifically, of artistic beauty, since it excludes natural beauty. He shows the relationship of poetry with other arts and explains precisely poet-ry#fs place as an art. In the Zibaldone di Pensieri (1817-1832), Leopardi de-velops his aesthetic ideas by creating a system of Fine Arts, speculating about the beautiful, the sublime, pleasure, simplicity and habit, novelty, imitation, the ugly, surprise, taste, among others. Therefore, the main objective of this thesis is to verify how the aesthetics of Hegel and Leopardi dialogue, espe-cially, the formulations about poetry. The analysis allowed noticing that there are similarities between the aesthetic approaches in poetry from the German philosopher and the Italian poet regarding the distinction between natural and beautiful, the imagination, the genius, the cheering of the old and the criticism of the Romantics, the taste, the ugliness, and simplicity. But the central point of convergence between the two scholars should be assigned to the imagina-tion, since in Leopardi it is also related to sensitivity and artistic creation. On the other hand, the divergent elements are the notion of beauty, poetry in the hierarchy of literary genres, the imitation and the sublime. Yet the concept of beauty is the main difference between Hegel and Leopardi, since the first moves on the grounds of spirit and history, and the second moves in the field of nature. In Hegel, the reflection is anchored in sensitive stimuli, in Leopardi on the other hand, in the habit

MALAT1 Expression Is Deregulated in miR-34a Knockout Cell Lines

    No full text
Background/Objectives: Non-coding microRNA-34a (miR-34a) regulates the expression of key factors involved in several cellular processes, such as differentiation, apoptosis, proliferation, cell cycle, and senescence. Deregulation of the expression of these factors is implicated in the onset and progression of several human diseases, including cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and pathologies associated with viral infections and inflammation. Despite numerous studies, the molecular mechanisms regulated by miR-34a remain to be fully understood. The present study aimed to generate miR-34a knockout cell lines to identify novel genes potentially regulated by its expression. Methods: We employed the CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing system to knock out the hsa-miR-34a gene in HeLa and 293T cell lines, two widely used models for studying molecular and cellular mechanisms. We compared proliferation rates and gene expression profiles via RNA-seq and qPCR analyses between the wild-type and miR-34a KO cell lines. Results: Knockout of miR-34a resulted in a decreased proliferation rate in both cell lines. Noteworthy, the ablation of miR-34a resulted in increased expression of the long non-coding RNA MALAT1. Additionally, miR-34a-5p silencing in the A375 melanoma cell line led to MALAT1 overexpression. Conclusions: Our findings support the role of the miR-34a/MALAT1 axis in regulating proliferation processes

“After being equals, is this the sequel?”: Vivian Fine’s Memoirs of Uliana Rooney as Artistic Commentary on Shifting Reactions to American Women’s Music

Although it has been acknowledged that American female modernist composers encountered obstacles to success, the nuanced and multi-faceted nature of these obstacles has yet to be fully examined. In this dissertation, I explore the worlds of Marion Bauer, Johanna Beyer, Vivian Fine, Miriam Gideon, and Ruth Crawford Seeger through the lenses of music history, reception history, and socio-linguistics in order to contribute a more thorough understanding of the obstacles women encountered. Before a note composed by a woman was ever heard, a battle was being waged with gendered identities. These identities are the starting point for my analysis of obstacles that threatened the careers of women modernists. In The Second Sex, Simone de Beauvoir says that society produces the creature that is woman. Drawing from this dictum, I explore ways in which socially-constructed identities were central to evaluations of women’s contributions. Using personal accounts and remembrances of the lives and careers of female modernists, I illustrate ways in which criticism of their music was also commentary on their potential or perceived lack thereof. I complicate the (mis)understanding that music composed by women was denigrated while that composed by men was praised. Women’s music was often praised but favorable evaluations were too often tempered by words that implicitly devalued their work, thereby contributing to their erasure from the canon. The second half of this dissertation examines Fine’s opera Memoirs of Uliana Rooney, which has received little scholarly attention. In it Fine provides a retrospective of obstacles that stymied twentieth-century women composers. Combining autobiography, fiction, and biography, Fine gives voice to the experiences of modernist women from her perspective as a woman enmeshed in the scene. In writing this work, Fine proclaimed she was “looking back into my life to see what happened.” Taking this statement at face value, I use Fine’s opera to initiate a heretofore unspoken conversation that recognizes women’s own perceptions of the challenges with which they were confronted and their strategies for emerging victoriously from the metaphorical minefield. I conclude with thoughts about the problems women are still faced with today and I suggest avenues for further research
