Thomas Rotch's marginalia in 'The miscellaneous works of David Humphreys'
David Humphreys book, The Miscellaneous Works' (1804) with Arvine Wales' name on the title page is the property of the Thomas and Charity Rotch Spring Hill Home, Massillon, Ohio. It is unclear if Wales was the original owner of the book or if the book was gifted to him by Thomas Rotch whose notes appear in the margins of several pages of the book, pages 345-346, in a chapter entitled, "Dissertation on the breed of Spanish Sheep called Merino." Rotch was living in Hartford Connecticut in 1804 when this book was published; Humphreys,(1752-1818) US Minister to Spain and a pioneer in the field of sheep farming imported one hundred merinos into the United States from Spain in 1802. He believed that this particular breed of sheep could improve livelihoods, agricultural practices and ensure national prosperity.
For historical analysis of Humphreys attempts to improve the economy of New England, see: Mark Sturges, "Fleecing Connecticut: David Humphreys and the Poetics of Sheep Farming." New England Quarterly, Vol. 87, No 3 (September 2014): 464-489
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
The Patriotism of David Humphreys: Nation, Narration, Orientalism and the Algerine Captivity Question
This paper has studied the patriotism of David Humphreys as it is revealed in his Orientalist vision of Algiers during the so-called Barbary captivity crisis. His patriotism works out as a narrative of America’s march towards a state of nationhood, which he does through his Orientalist appropriation of Algiers. This is related to his celebration of the ideals of the American nation in contrast to a demonization of Algiers. Therefore, his patriotic poems are considered as narratives of the United States as a nation of liberty and progress contrasted to Algiers as a slave and despotic power. Following Homi Bhabha’s idea of nationness, the paper has shown David Humphreys’s celebration of the American people’s march into the status of “freedom’s heirs” entitled with “the pursuit of happiness”. This is through the workings of the Institutions of the land for the promotion and protection of the ideals of justice, equality and freedom. As narration involves progress rather than regress, he adds that the United States is bestowed a “glorious future” as the people inherited the fundamental principle of the “love of nation” and the commitment to it body and soul. He brings these issues vividly through a contrast he draws with Algiers and the so-called “pirate race” as well as the European nations which tended to be tributary to Algiers and the assaults effected against the new nation.
The international coal industry : comments on the paper by David Humphreys and Keith Welham
This comment discusses in more detail one of the primary messages in the paper by David Humphreys and Keith Welham, namely the fundamental shift in the steam coal industry away from security of supply concerns and national focuses towards an international and cost-driven perspective. On the supply side this has meant an increased focus on mining productivity. By consulting recent research this comment reviews the sources of productivity growth in the coal industry and discusses the prospects for future improvements. The demand side of the steam coal market has also witnessed fundamental change as electric utilities have become more cost focused. In the 1970s and early 1980s nuclear was the main competitor to coal, but today the fiercest competition comes from gas. While coal benefits from the favourable economics of existing plants, gas use tends to be cheaper on a total cost basis and it is also environmentally more benign. The competition from gas therefore puts new and different competitive pressures on steam coal. Not only does coal procurement need to become more flexible and diverse; the negative perception of coal as a dirty fuel has to weaken as well.</p
A Connecticut Wit in Queen Maria’s Court: David Humphreys on the Happiness, Future Glory and Industry of America
For Helen Milner, "international political economy is a growth industry" (1998) and, according to the "growth stability theory", a stable and open world economy requires the dominance of one country, or leading power, to coordinate and discipline other countries and ensure the conditions conducive to economic growth. By most accounts, throughout the 19th century that hegemon was still Great Britain. Yet, as early as the 18th century, the United States were debating how to secure commerce and navigation in the Mediterranean Sea and prevent the Barbary pirates from entering the Atlantic, weighing whether, in Jefferson’s words, to obtain peace at any cost: "to obtain peace by purchasing it [or] to vindicate their commerce by arms" (1790). This paper aims to explore the ways in which David Humphreys, as both poet and politician, helped shape 19th-century American alterity into hegemony and how he did so from Lisbon, as First Minister from the United States of America to Portugal and Commissioner Plenipotentiary charged by George Washington with negotiating and concluding Treaties of Amity and Commerce with Tripoli and Algiers.
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
