Control aspects of synchronous machines in power systems applications
Developments in control design methods for power systems have continually been made during the last ten years, and the present thesis seeks to make its contribution to this pattern of work. In so doing, it develops electrical machine mathematical models on which the subsequent designs are based. The formulations relate specifically to those from which computer programs may be readily developed and particular importance has been attached to the systematic marshalling of plant and network equations for the subsequent and efficient solution by computer methods. Methods of model reduction and state transformation are described and these are used to manipulate the system models into the form appropriate to the regulator design algorithm. The regulator-design algorithm is described in which a systematic numerical technique is used to predetermine the performance criterionJ = C(xtQx + u )dt. The constraints imposed on the system response by the design specification are associated with the movement of the eigenvalue locations to give actual values for the elements of Q. The algorithm described, for the linear single-input system, is based on the sensitivity of the elements of Q to shifts in the eigenvalue locations to produce a performance criterion for improved system stability. The resulting algorithm is applied to the design of an a.c. turbo generator excitation control and is shown to give a system that has advantages over a controller designed using conventional techniques. The thesis is supported by four published papers in which the author of the present thesis is joint author. One reports on the development of the design algorithm and the others deal with computational aspects of control design and its-application to power systems; computer listings are presented in the papers. In addition, the author's work has been presented at two conferences for which published records exist.</p
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Geschändete Natur, verdorbene Menschheit
In this contribution to the book Narrative der Deponie the main intention is to follow a thematic-string which concerns “social" disasters resulting from human groups fighting over territory and polluting the environment. In the last years a lot of Italian writers have published books on Ecothriller and Mafia/Thriller Themes: Carlo Lucarelli, who is also author of some TV Programs as “Blu Notte” wrote a short novel of about 100 pages, Navi a perdere (Ships to be lost), on the problem of the draining away of toxic waste material in the sea, showing how is it possible to hide the truth under the surface of hypocrisy; also Massimo Carlotto has published with Francesco Abate the novel L’albero dei microchip (The microchip tree), which concerns a travel in the obscure world of the international criminality as a kind of enquiry-book. Francesco Abate has connected the military activity in the largest experimental training area for military forces in Europe, Perdas de Fogu (Sardegna- Italy), that is also a Secret Military Zone, with the increasing of leukemic pathologies and cancer in this part of Italy. These are only some of the examples brought into the analysis of the present essay.Dieser Beitrag hat nicht nur das Ziel, über den italienischen Eco-Thriller der Nuller- und Zehnerjahre nach der Jahrtausendwende zu informieren. Er will auch die Initiativen der Erkundung und Bekämpfung von Umweltzerstörungen in den Blick nehmen, die sich einer Art Tauziehen zwischen dem Schutz des nationalen Territoriums und der Ausübung krimineller mafiöser Machenschaften in Italien ausgesetzt sehen
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
David Christopher Gadsby - Bibliography from David Christopher Gadsby. 26 March 1947—9 March 2019
Over nearly five decades, David Christopher Gadsby pioneered biophysical research that advanced our mechanistic understanding of ion-transporting proteins in biological membranes. His passion for hands-on do-it-yourself electrophysiology, his depth of analytical rigor, and his idiosyncratic scientific aesthetic expanded the edge of discovery in two areas: the electrical character of the Na+ pump, and the molecular workings of ‘cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator’ (CFTR), the chloride ion channel whose mutations cause cystic fibrosis. His approach was flavoured by an appreciation for common underlying features between these ostensibly distinct types of membrane-transport systems. While David's focus was first on the basic molecular biophysics of a problem, he was always attuned to implications of his discoveries for human health. Based in New York at The Rockefeller University throughout his independent scientific career, and at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, as a squid-season research-scientist, he was proficient in wrestling with problems spanning a wide swath of membrane biology: from determinants of the cardiac electrical waveform, to microsecond-timescale ionic currents in squid axons, to details of structure–mechanism relations in membrane pump and ion-channel proteins. He wore his eminence lightly and never distanced himself from the laboratory, where he often performed experiments with his own hands right up to his retirement. His reserved scientific personality, which demanded equally from his colleagues and himself immaculate data, unclouded logic, and substantive pertinence to the issues at hand, contrasted with his palpable joy in a good experiment and in his sea-loving life outside the lab
