Conditional Income Transfer Programs. The case of the Universal Child Allowance for Social Protection from the perspective of directors of secondary schools in the city of Esperanza
Fil: Longoni, Gisel Andrea.
This work studied the social policy Universal Child Allowance and its implementation in educational institutions in the city of Esperanza (Santa Fe). The questions that guide the study refer to: What knowledge do the institutional actors of the Universal Child Allowance have? What changes have occurred in the dynamics of the institutional organization since its implementation? There were changes? What difficulties does its implementation generate? What possibilities does it promote? How do institutional actors mean to the recipients of the Universal Child Allowance? The focus will be on the analysis of said social policy in the educational field as it represents one of the conditions required for its granting.
The methodological design used is flexible. Data collection techniques corresponding to the qualitative tradition are used, which make it possible to understand the assessments and meanings that social agents make regarding the implication of the Universal Child Allowance in the educational trajectories of young people
Discussion of "recommendations for Teaching a Successful Design-Based Course: Hydraulic Structure Design" by B. P. Tullis and S. L. Barfuss
Design-based courses often have more latitude with respect to implementing interesting and unique teaching styles and curricula; they can also provide opportunities for broader-context problem solving, thereby improving student learning. Deductive teaching methods are used extensively throughout math, science, and engineering curricula [i.e., students are taught the “how” (fundamental principles), and the “why” is learned by applying those principles through solving problems]. When students successfully grasp why something is important, they often become more engaged in developing and understanding the fundamentals underlying the solution (inductive teaching style). With some creativity and planning, design-based classes can offer a positive alternative learning environment that utilizes both deductive and inductive learning processes. Four keys for enhancing student-learning experiences in a design-based course are discussed. The recommendations and techniques presented herein come from the authors’ first-hand experiences developing and teaching a hydraulic structures design course at Utah State University
Mesenchymal stem cells and magnetic nanoparticles: in vitro studies and in vivo protocol validation for cellular homing into a target organ by magnetic fields
Mesenchymal stem cells-based immunosuppressive therapy in pancreatic islet transplantation.
Immunomodulation of allogenic response in pancreatic islet transplantation by mesenchymal stem cells
Magnetic carbon nanotubes: a new tool for shepherding mesenchymal stem cells by magnetic fields
We investigated the interaction between magnetic carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and their ability to guide these intravenously injected cells in living rats by using an external magnetic field.
MATERIALS & METHODS:
Multiwalled CNTs were used to treat MSCs derived from rat bone marrow. Cytotoxicity induced by nanotubes was studied using the WST-1 proliferation and Hoechest 33258 apoptosis assays. The effects of nanotubes on MSCs were evaluated by monitoring the effects on cellular growth rates, immunophenotyping and differentiation, and on the arrangement of cytoskeletal actin. MSCs loaded with nanotubes were injected in vivo in the portal vein of rats driving their localization in the liver by magnetic field. An histological analysis was performed on the liver, lungs and kidneys of all animals.
RESULTS:
CNTs did not affect cell viability and their ability to differentiate in osteocytes and adipocytes. Both the CNTs and the magnetic field did not alter the cell growth rate, phenotype and cytoskeletal conformation. CNTs, when exposed to magnetic fields, are able to shepherd MSCs towards the magnetic source in vitro. Moreover, the application of a magnetic field alters the biodistribution of CNT-labelled MSCs after intravenous injection into rats, increasing the accumulation of cells into the target organ (liver).
CONCLUSION:
Multiwalled CNTs hold the potential for use as nanodevices to improve therapeutic protocols for transplantation and homing of stem cells in vivo. This could pave the way for the development of new strategies for the manipulation/guidance of MSCs in regenerative medicine and cell transplantation
The Functional Evaluation of Eating Difficulties Scale: Study Protocol and Validation in Infants with Neurodevelopmental Impairments and Disabilities
IntroductionA reliable and accurate evaluation of oral-motor skills in newborns at risk for swallowing and feeding disorders is key to set the goals of effective early interventions. Although many tools are available to assess oral-motor skills in newborns, limited evidence exists for what pertains their reliability and their effectivity in predicting short- and long-term developmental outcomes in at-risk infants. The aim of the present study is to develop and provide a preliminary validation of a new clinically grounded tool [i.e., the Functional Evaluation of Eating Difficulties Scale (FEEDS)] specifically designed to be used with at-risk newborns and infants. The paper describes the steps of tool development and information on the reliability of the tool are provided.Methods/analysisThe FEEDS has been developed according to clinical evidence and expertise by a multidisciplinary team of professionals dealing with feeding problems in at-risk infants diagnosed with neurodevelopmental impairments and disabilities. The steps of FEEDS development are reported, together with a detailed description of items, scoring procedure, and clinical cutoff. The FEEDS has been applied to a relatively large sample of 0- to 12-month-old infants (N = 136) with neurodevelopmental disability, enrolled consecutively between 2004 and 2016 at the Scientific Institute IRCCS Eugenio Medea (Bosisio Parini, Italy), which is the main rehabilitation hospital for children with neurodevelopmental disabilities in Italy. Internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) and reliability (inter-rater agreement) have been assessed.Ethics and disseminationAll the procedures are consistent with the World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki (2013) and the FEEDS has been approved by the clinical committee of the Scientific Institute IRCCS Eugenio Medea. Further psychometric characteristics and evidence of the predictive validity of the FEEDS will be obtained on a larger sample and they will be reported in future publications from this group
