“Polish” Pages of Daniel Stein, the Translator by L. Ulitskaya
The author of the article analyses “Polish” pages of Daniel Stein, the translator, one of the most disputable novels written by L. Ulitskaya. Complicated life of frontier (eastern and western) Polish lands shown through life stories of the characters is dealt with. The subjective images of Poland which appear in consciousness of the heroes are of the utmost importance for understand- ing the ideology of the novel. In general the image of Poland in L. Ulitskaya’s novel is connected with semantics of losses, and the break of characters’ real connections with their homeland can be understood as the evidence of trouble, disintegration of integrity

Existential problems in the prose of L. Ulytska (based on the novels “The Kukotsky Enigma” and “Daniel Stein, Interpreter”)
The dissertation is devoted to the study of the peculiarities of the implementation of existential problems in the prose works of one of the leading modern Russian writers Lyudmyla Ulytska on the example of her novels “The Kukotsky Enigma” and “Daniel Stein, Interpreter”. The relevance of the topic is caused, on the one hand, by the place and significance of L. Ulytska's work in the literary process of the late XX – early XXI centuries, and on the other – by the lack of researchers’ attention to the existential problems in the writer's works, which take more and more important place in her works of recent decades. The aim of the study is to characterize the peculiarities of the implementation of existential problems in L. Ulytska's novels “The Kukotsky Enigma” and “Daniel Stein, Interpreter”. In the dissertation, for the first time, based on a comprehensive analysis of existential problems in L. Ulytska's novels “The Kukotsky Enigma” and “Daniel Stein, Interpreter”, we have characterized the peculiarities of the implementation of existential problems in the writer's prose works; it has been proposed the typology of chronotope in the novel “The Kukotsky Enigma” and described the peculiarities of each of the selected types – infernal, oneiric, topographical and psychological; it has been established the intertextual connections of the novel “The Kukotsky Enigma” with Dante Alighieri’s “Divine Comedy” and the novel “Nausea” by the French existentialist philosopher J.-P. Sartre; it has beendescribed the role of “situations on the edge” in the novel “Daniel Stein, Interpreter”
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
