Ruins of the past: the use and perception of abandoned structures in the Maya lowlands
Travix W. Stanton and Aline Magnoni, editors.Includes bibliographical references and index. From the Formative to the present, Maya peoples have continuously built, altered, abandoned, and re-used structures, imbuing them with new meanings at each transformation. Ruins of the Past is the first volume to focus on how previously built structures in the Maya Lowlands were used and perceived by later peoples, exploring the topic through concepts of landscape, place, and memory.--Book jacket.Foreword / Wendy Ashmore -- Places of remembrance: the use and perception of abandoned structures in the Maya lowlands / Travis W. Comparative study of in-vitro autofluorescence of normal versus non-melanoma-skin-cancer cells at different excitation wavelengths
: In this experimental study the autofluorescence of squamous carcinoma cells, stimulated by 6 different excitation wavelengths in the range 280-533 nm, has been compared with the autofluorescence of normal control keratinocytes. Skin cells were cultivated in vitro, to isolate their characteristic autofluorescence form the more complex one that would be originated by the complete skin tissue. Autofluorescence spectra in the visible range were complemented by absorption measurements. It was observed that the control cells showed characteristic emission (and absorption) structures due to typical endogenous chromophores [FAD and NAD(P)H, lipo-pigments, porphyrins], that were severely dumped in pathological cells. The autofluorescence spectra were then elaborated by multivariate analysis: after a first exploratory data analysis by means of Principal Component Analysis, the whole dataset was used to develop classification models using partial least squares-discriminant analysis, to differentiate between normal and pathological cells. This permitted us to identify the most suitable fluorescence spectral interval, in the 550-670 nm range, to discriminate between normal and pathological behavior, independently on the excitation wavelength

Effect of total extracorporeal circulation time in miocardic revascularization surgery on urinary urea nitrogen loss
Press as a scope of power: a reading of Memories of the recorder Isaías Caminha, by Lima Barreto.
After reading the novel, Recordações do escrivão Isaías Caminha, by the writer Lima Barreto, the work tries to discuss its representation made by the press as a scope of power. . In the first chapter the author presents what she considers to be the most important in the fortune critique of the romance since its publication until nowadays. In the next chapter the history of Lima Barreto as a journalist is approached, his attempts to join the professional journalism , his contribution towards the small press, symbolized by the working class and trade unions, as well as the history of the newspaper Correio da Manhã, which was founded by Edmundo Bittencourt and represented in the form of literary in the novel Recordações do escrivão Isaías Caminha. Finally, in the last chapter an analysis of the romance is done to show accurately how the narrator-writer Isaías Caminha builds the image while dissects the anatomy of what Lima Barreto called the fourth power , in other words, the Brazilian press its contemporary
Connecting Theory and Practice in LIS: The Training Model of the Information Resource Centers
The traditional LIS education is also essential as it provides the foundation for our profession. Also, the LIS theory explores the history and evolution of the librarianship in different era. The library science educators do review the LIS courses from time to time, because it isn’t one time job. As the nature of information sources changes, the sophistication of information technology advances, and the quantity of knowledge explodes; the job market of librarians itself demands revision and expansion in the curricula of the LIS.
Even if the curriculum of an LIS school is up to the mark, the institution is required to train its new information professionals. Every type of library (i.e. public, academic, or special etc.) has to impart a proper training to its employees for better performance and productivity.
At the same time, it is true that not all the libraries or their parent institutions can afford the expensive and sophisticated training model of the IRCs. However, if they put the professional training on priority and spend some resources and time on it, they can get best out of their employees. One way is to arrange the in-house training sessions at their libraries. Moreover, the libraries of the same kind or in the same region can coordinate training on different LIS modules. The Internet is itself a good learning, teaching and training tool. The information professional can improve the professional skills through reading the professional literature, becoming a member of professional association, and consulting the value added professional websites
This study was carried out in the Chavantes Reservoir Middle Paranapanema River, SP/PR, Brazil, to evaluate the role of the longitudinal compartmentalization of this large reservoir in the species distribution, resource partitioning and trophic structure of fish assemblages. Fish were collected every three months from October/2005 to July/2006, with gill nets in six sites along the longitudinal gradient of the reservoir, represented by two lotic (ITA and VER), two transitional (PAR e FAR) and two lentic ones (BAR e RCL). We registered 57 fish species in the reservoir. The chapter 1 presents the distribution, abundance and biomass of fish species, with analysis of species diversity (H’), evenness (E), β diversity, and cluster of the six sites based on the abundance of fish species. The chapter 2 presents the diet composition, trophic organization, niche breadth and niche overlap of 44 species from the fish assemblages. In the chapter 3 was evaluated the trophic structure of assemblages, based in the variation of abundance and biomass of 36 species belonging to 9 trophic guilds. The results indicate that 1) fish assemblages differ in species composition, abundance and diversity along the longitudinal gradient; 2) the diet of fish species is important in their segregation along the sites, affected by the high consumption of detritus, aquatic insects and vegetal matter in the lotic and transitional sites and by fish in the lentic ones; 3) great number of species present high trophic specialization, due to the low values of niche breadth; 4) the low niche overlap observed between pairs indicate that species partition food resources, with no evidence of competition; 5) the high abundance of detritivorous and insectivorous sustain great biomass of piscivorous in many sites. All the results reinforce that longitudinal compartmentalization and environmental aspects of each site are important...
