This research is aimed to analyze experiential meaning breadth and grammatical complexity realization variations of W. Shakespeare’s King Lear and J. Crowther’s King Lear. This research tries to answer three questions. The first is how the experiential meaning breadth and grammatical complexity realization variations are represented in W. Shakespeare’s King Lear and its translation J. Crowther’s King Lear. The second is what contextual factors motivate the occurrence of the experiential meaning breadth and grammatical complexity realization variations in question. The third is what contextual effects resulted from the experiential meaning breadth and grammatical complexity realization variations in translation context. This research applied the descriptive qualitative method with the quantitative data to strengthen the findings. In conducting this research, the data were analyzed through some steps: reading the ST and the TT of the data, writing all clauses from both SE and TE in the data sheet, classifying and analyzing the data using experiential meaning breadth and grammatical complexity realization variation analysis based on the given parameter, and recapping the data on a table, describing the data in the table into words, analyzing field, tenor and mode of the texts to find out the motivating factors, and analyzing the motivating factors to find out the textual and contextual effects on the texts. The findings show that the average number of experiential meaning breadth variation which is placed in level “2” or “low” level and it is shown by the number of 12.18. Meanwhile, the average number of grammatical complexity realization variation is placed in level “1” or “very low” level and it is shown by the number of 9. Those low and very low variations show that the translation has achieved a high level of equivalence in meaning and realization variations, or this translation is translationally appropriate. Those variations are motivated by many factors. First, the intra-textual contexts, they are diction, contracted and archaic words, different spelling words, omission, grammatical principles, and paraphrase. Second, there are also many inter- textual motivating factors, i.e. inter-related text and situation value (field, tenor, and mode). Finally, the contextual effects which are caused by motivating factors are the readability effects towards the target readers of the two texts, in which the target text follows the grammatical rule of the present time and the purpose of creating the texts which is to entertain

From Admiration to Confrontation: Gunter Grass and the United States

Gunter Grass is. without doubt, the best known representative of postwar and contemporary German literature in the United States. A few random samples culled from reviews of Grass\u27s work in this country may suffice to illustrate this point. In 1964, on occasion of the English translation of Hundejahre (Dog Years), Newsweek wrote: Gunter Grass today is acknowledged as the author who put postwar German literature back in the world market. He is fast becoming a director of much of his country\u27s creative movement, a keeper of old myths and new methods. The Tin Drum, the novel that so far has determined Grass\u27s reception in this country-the voluminous and challenging The Flounder notwithstanding-was even credited with initiating the rebirth of German letters. The recent film version of The Tin Drum contributed to a revival of interest in the novel; in 1982 the novelist John Irving stated: Die Blechtrommel … has not been surpassed, it is the greatest novel by a living author.\u27\u27 Irving continued in his praise of the author of The Tin Drum by claiming that you can\u27t be well-read today if you haven\u27t read him. Gunter Grass is simply the most original and versatile writer alive. Although such lavish critical endorsement is not to be encountered in all quarters, at least one other segment of the reading public, the professional intermediaries of German literature, that is, the professors and teachers of German, seem to agree with Irving. In a literary opinion poll conducted by the Goethe Institute in Boston. Massachusetts, The Tin Drum ranked first among the professors\u27 favorite works of postwar German literature. Curiously, The Flounder attained second place-ahead of such redoubtable works as Thomas Mann\u27s Doctor Faustus, Heinrich Boll\u27s Group Portrait with Lady, and Max Frisch\u27s Homo Faber

Clustering remains a vibrant area of research in statistics. Although there are many books on this topic, there are relatively few that are well founded in the theoretical aspects. In Robust Cluster Analysis and Variable Selection, Gunter Ritter presents an overview of the theory and applications of probabilistic clustering and variable selection, synthesizing the key research results of the last 50 years. The author focuses on the robust clustering methods he found to be the most useful on simulated data and real-time applications. The book provides clear guidance for the varying needs of bo

A Mythic Journey: Gunter Grass\u27s Tin Drum

Although The Tin Drum has often been called one of the great novels of the 20th century, most critics have been baffled in attempting to draw its apparent chaos into a single literary framework. Here is the full-length study to penetrate the brilliance of Gunter Grass’s style and uncover the novel’s mythopoetic core. In A Mythic Journey: Gunter Grass\u27s Tin Drum, author Edward Diller convincingly demonstrates the still valid relationship between modern and classical literary criticism. By reading The Tin Drum as both modern myth and historical epic, he provides a profound and sensitive interpretation of one of the masterpieces of 20th century literature. Edward Diller is a professor of German at the University of Oregon.https://uknowledge.uky.edu/upk_german_literature/1001/thumbnail.jp

The heat conductivities of some 70 oriented rock specimens taken from the field or subsurface were determined in various directions at about 94° C and atmospheric pressure. Some 500 individual measurements, duplicate measurements included, were carried out. The majority of the tested samples are slates from the Rheinische Schiefergebirge and the Harz (“Rhenoherzynikum”), a minor portion is made up of limestones from the Rheinische Schiefergebirge, metamorphic rocks from the central Eastern Alps and some other areas, and only some magmatic rocks were tested for comparison. The results of the heat conductivity measurements are presented in the tables 2–5. In most of the rocks investigated, especially in those showing planar and linear textures at the mesoscale, the heat conductivity is strongly controlled by the direction of measurement. These rocks are anisotropic with respect to the heat conductivity (and to other physical rock properties as well). The measurements of the heat conductivity in slates from the Rheinische Schiefergebirge showed considerable differences in different directions of the rock samples. In those slates, containing a transverse (“slaty”) cleavage (s1) besides the bedding planes (ss) (the typical roofing slates, e g.), the plane of the slaty cleavage turns out to be the best heat “insulator”, i. e., the direction of the least heat conductivity of the whole rock (k33) is oriented normally to s1 The direction of the greatest heat conductivity (k11 of these rocks lies within the plane of s1 and parallel to the intersection line of ss and s1, or parallel to the “Faser” (“longrain”), a lineation down dip of the slaty cleavage planes, only in some regionally restricted areas. The direction of the mean conductivity (k22) is oriented normally to k11 in the plane of s1. The anisotropy of heat conductivity in these slates (as well as in the mica schists and gneisses investigated) shows a orthorhombic symmetry. The tensor of the heat conductivity for these rocks, referred to the main axes, has the form In other “slates”, or better “shales” in the cases concerned, from the upper part of the Rhenohercynian sedimentary column, lacking any transverse cleavage at the mesoscale and rearrangements and new crystallization of the phyllosilicate minerals at the microscale, the bedding plane (ss) turns out to be the best heat “insulator”. Consequently, the direction of least heat conductivity (k33) in these rocks is normal to the bedding plane (ss). Within the bedding plane there is no preferred direction of heat conductivity (k11 = k22 > k33). Both slate types differing with respect to the anisotropy of heat conductivity with k33 ⊥ s1 and k33 ⊥ ss, resp., are linked by transitional stages. The results of heat conductivity measurements in slates from different tectonic frameworks (tectonic “environments”) of the Rhenoherzynikum presented here, reflect — in an indirect way — the various finite stages of the progressive fabric development within a relatively “shallow” orogen such as the Rheinische Schiefergebirge and the Harz, according to the author (Langheinrich 1964, 1976, 1978). Measurements of the heat conductivity of limestones from the Rheinische Schiefergebirge showing marked evidence of finite internal tectonic deformation demonstrated that these rocks are isotropic with regard to heat conductivity, presumably as a result of posttectonic annealing recrystallization of the rock forming calcite. Within the mica-schists and gneisses investigated the heat conductivity is always at a minimum normal to the s-planes (foliation) of these rocks, and at a maximum within the s-planes, mostly parallel to a lineation at mesoscale. Within this group of rocks the highest (k11) and lowest heat conductivity (k33) can differ by a factor of nearly 3 (table 4). All specimens of magmatites, only measured for comparison, showed near-perfect isotropy of heat conductivity. The whole-rock anisotropy of heat conductivity — considered under the conditions of experiment — is controlled by a number of factors. But the essential factors controlling this strong whole-rock anisotropy of the slates, mica-schists, and gneisses are the presence in considerable amounts of rock forming minerals with high individual anisotropies of heat conductivity, and the statistically preferred orientation of these minerals. The phyllosilicate minerals illite/muscovite with an “anisotropy factor” (k11/k33) of about 6 and chlorite (with a presumably similar “anisotrop factor”) play a major part. Quartz which shows some preferred crystal lattice orientation in some cases only plays a subordinate role with respect to the whole-rock anisotropy of heat conductivity. The “anisotropy factor” of quartz is about 1.7 (at room temperature). The statistically preferred orientation of some crystal lattices of the rock forming minerals with high individual anisotropies of heat conductivity was studied for a series of representative specimens of slates using a X-ray texture goniometer. The X-ray studies revealed excellent geometric correlations between the symmetries of the X-ray textures and the anisotropy of heat conductivity. Some 50 specimens of slates were selected for measurements of the propagation velocity of longitudinal ultrasonic pulses in various directions. Here, a perfect geometric correlation of the anisotropy of heat conductivity and the elastic anisotropy was found. Comparisons of the degree of crystallinity of illite and the anisotropy of heat conductivity in some slate specimens revealed no clear-cut correlation of these two parameters (see table 2). Before extending the data of heat conductivity and anisotropy of heat conductivity of rocks, determined under laboratory conditions, to “in situ” conditions a number of correction factors must be taken into account. These correction factors involve temperature conditions, the porosity of rocks, the kind of the pore fluids, the crack content (again a function of the stress conditions “in situ”), and others.
