Dale Carnegie Training: The Effects on Self-esteem

    No full text
Self-esteem can have an effect on social anxiety, shyness and social withdrawal and more. In this study self-esteem and other factors were measured in two groups of young people (N = 98), with the mean age of 22.8 years. The groups were an experimental group that was taking part in Dale Carnegie training and a control group that had never taken part in such training. The experimental group was measured at three different time points; before Dale Carnegie training, in the last class of training and three months after the training, but the control group was measured at one time point. Within the experimental group, there was a significant difference between self-esteem, social anxiety and shyness and social withdrawal at the three different time points. That indicates that Dale Carnegie training does increase self-esteem significantly and it maintains higher three months after the training has taken place

The use of Dale Carnegie training by law enforcement agencies : a comparative analysis of Dale Carnegie trained and non-Dale Carnegie trained officers within community policing oriented departments

The purpose of this research was to present a comparison of attitudes between Dale Carnegie Trained and non-Carnegie trained officers within Community Policing oriented law enforcement agencies. McAllen Police Department (McAllen, Texas) and Michigan State University's Department of Public Safety were examined. Community Policing agencies were chosen, predicated upon the inherent need for human relations training evidenced within Community Policing's philosophy of police/community partnership and interactive problem solving. Dependent variables examined were officers! attitudes toward job satisfaction, job-related stress, willingness to interact with the citizenry, and departments' stated missions and goals. Data indicated no statistically significant attitudinal differences with respect to job satisfaction, job-related stress, and departmental goals. A difference was indicated for willingness to interact with citizenry. Although this significant result might prove valuable to Community Policing agencies, additional research is suggested to understand how Dale Carnegie Training affects behavior in addition to attitude.Thesis (M.S.)--Michigan State University. Almennt mælast karlmenn með hærra sjálfsálit en konur. Markmið rannsóknarinnar var að rannsaka þennan kynjamun í sjálfsáliti með því að bera saman kynin fyrir og eftir 8 vikna Dale Carnegie námskeið á Íslandi og við samanburðarhóp. Samanburðarhópurinn samanstóð af einstaklingum sem höfðu ekki lokið Dale Carnegie námskeiði og tilgáturnar voru annarvegar að það væri meiri kynjamunur á sjálfsáliti hjá samanburðarhópnum en hjá þeim sem hafa lokið Dale Carnegie námskeiði og hins vegar að það væri minni kynjamismunur á sjálfsáliti hjá þátttakendum sem höfðu lokið Dale Carnegie námskeiði. Boðið var upp á nafnlaus og ópersónugreinanlega spurningarkönnun sem innihélt meðal annars Rosenberg spurningarlista sem mælir sjálfsálit. Svör þátttakendanna (N=87) gáfu til kynna að tilgáturnar stæðust ekki og að það sé meiri kynjamismunur á sjálfsáliti eftir námskeið og minni kynjamismunur í samanburðarhópnum. Lykilorð: Sjálfsálit, kynjamismunur, Dale Carnegie þjálfunMales have been reported to have higher self-esteem compared to females. This study aimed to test this gender difference by comparing the genders before and after an 8-week Dale Carnegie training in Iceland and to a comparison group. The comparison group consisted of individuals who had not attended Dale Carnegie training before. The first hypothesis was that there would be a greater gender difference in selfesteem between participants in the comparison group compared to the participants that finished Dale Carnegie training. The second hypothesis was that there would be a lesser gender difference between the participants who had completed the Dale Carnegie training. A nameless and unidentifiable questionnaire was offered to participants that in part consisted of The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (SES) which measured self-esteem. Results from participants (N=87) did not support the hypothesis and suggested that there was a greater gender difference between the participants that had completed the Dale Carnegie training where the females had higher self-esteem than males and that the gender difference was smaller between the participants who had not yet received training where males score higher in self-esteem.
