Volunteers and mega sporting events : developing a research framework
Interest in all aspects of the politics, financing, planning, management and operation of mega sporting events has been highlighted both by success stories and ongoing problems associated with Olympic Games, Football World Cups and other similar events. There is a growing literature that addresses these and related matters through both case history and comparative analyses. Within the context of mega sporting events, the issue of employment creation is an important motivator for host cities and features high on the political justification agenda for bids to host events. At the same time, the most significant working contribution to major mega events in sports, as in other areas, is provided by the very large numbers of volunteers who undertake tasks across the range of opportunities afforded by such events. Numbers of volunteers between 40,000 and 60,000 have been noted for some recent major events. Relatively little is known about these volunteers at mega sporting events and yet their contribution and wider impact is very significant, both to the events themselves and within the host community. This paper seeks to identify the evident gaps that exist in understanding areas such as what volunteers do at mega sporting events; who they are; what motivates them; how volunteering impacts upon their lives; what associated activities they do surrounding the event in the host city; and the extent to which volunteering is recidivistic. The paper concludes with the presentation of a tentative research framework agenda in order to guide future study of this important area

This report will treat the use of models to predict discoloured water events. Discoloured water events happen when sediment in drinking water pipes is resuspended. Plan BAn event is the most exciting and fastest growing industry related to leisure. Events can be viewed as part of the new wave of alternative tourism. This is the reason that tourism organizations in many countries actively promote events. An event induces tourists to participate. It makes them stay longer in the area which has held the event. An event generates jobs for the residents. The residents would need to develop an infrastructure to provide the many needed facilities. This study researched the economic impact of the Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) on the tourism and cinema industry in Busan, South Korea. The festival was developed with attractive characteristics as a cultural event. The finding of this study supports the positive economic impact, development of the cinema and tourism industries, and the attitude of residents before and after PIFF in Busan. Automatic identification of gait events using an instrumented sock
Abstract Background Textile-based transducers are an emerging technology in which piezo-resistive properties of materials are used to measure an applied strain. By incorporating these sensors into a sock, this technology offers the potential to detect critical events during the stance phase of the gait cycle. This could prove useful in several applications, such as functional electrical stimulation (FES) systems to assist gait. Methods We investigated the output of a knitted resistive strain sensor during walking and sought to determine the degree of similarity between the sensor output and the ankle angle in the sagittal plane. In addition, we investigated whether it would be possible to predict three key gait events, heel strike, heel lift and toe off, with a relatively straight-forward algorithm. This worked by predicting gait events to occur at fixed time offsets from specific peaks in the sensor signal. Results Our results showed that, for all subjects, the sensor output exhibited the same general characteristics as the ankle joint angle. However, there were large between-subjects differences in the degree of similarity between the two curves. Despite this variability, it was possible to accurately predict gait events using a simple algorithm. This algorithm displayed high levels of trial-to-trial repeatability. Conclusions This study demonstrates the potential of using textile-based transducers in future devices that provide active gait assistance.</p

Government Responsiveness in Race-Related Crisis Events
Government Responsiveness in Race-Related Crisis Events argues that decision-making in crisis events related to race and ethnicity (RRCEs) is distinctive based upon the historical treatment of people of color and current narratives surrounding race in the United States. The author presents racially sensitive crisis events, not as independent problems, but as symptoms of an underlying condition which began upon the country\u27s founding. She contends public officials will need to recognize and draw upon the interrelated nature of these crises for effective solutions and introduces a decision-making model for race-related crisis events. The author uses grounded theory and a critical race lens to explore the decision-making of public officials in Alabama, South Carolina, and Mississippi concerning the removal of the Confederate Flag from state grounds in the aftermath of the 2015 Charleston Church Shooting. Regular treatment with formoterol for chronic asthma: serious adverse events
Epidemiological evidence has suggested a link between beta(2)-agonists and increases in asthma mortality. There has been much debate about possible causal links for this association, and whether regular (daily) long-acting beta2-agonists are safe.ObjectivesThe aim of this review is to assess the risk of fatal and non-fatal serious adverse events in trials that randomised patients with chronic asthma to regular formoterol versus placebo or regular short-acting beta2-agonists.Search methodsWe identified trials using the Cochrane Airways Group Specialised Register of trials. We checked websites of clinical trial registers for unpublished trial data and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) submissions in relation to formoterol. The date of the most recent search was January 2012.Selection criteriaWe included controlled, parallel design clinical trials on patients of any age and severity of asthma if they randomised patients to treatment with regular formoterol and were of at least 12 weeks' duration. Concomitant use of inhaled corticosteroids was allowed, as long as this was not part of the randomised treatment regimen.Data collection and analysisTwo authors independently selected trials for inclusion in the review. One author extracted outcome data and the second author checked them. We sought unpublished data on mortality and serious adverse events.Main resultsThe review includes 22 studies (8032 participants) comparing regular formoterol to placebo and salbutamol. Non-fatal serious adverse event data could be obtained for all participants from published studies comparing formoterol and placebo but only 80% of those comparing formoterol with salbutamol or terbutaline.Three deaths occurred on regular formoterol and none on placebo; this difference was not statistically significant. It was not possible to assess disease-specific mortality in view of the small number of deaths. Non-fatal serious adverse events were significantly increased when regular formoterol was compared with placebo (Peto odds ratio (OR) 1.57; 95% CI 1.06 to 2.31). One extra serious adverse event occurred over 16 weeks for every 149 people treated with regular formoterol (95% CI 66 to 1407 people). The increase was larger in children than in adults, but the impact of age was not statistically significant. Data submitted to the FDA indicate that the increase in asthma-related serious adverse events remained significant in patients taking regular formoterol who were also on inhaled corticosteroids.No significant increase in fatal or non-fatal serious adverse events was found when regular formoterol was compared with regular salbutamol or terbutaline.Authors' conclusionsIn comparison with placebo, we have found an increased risk of serious adverse events with regular formoterol, and this does not appear to be abolished in patients taking inhaled corticosteroids. The effect on serious adverse events of regular formoterol in children was greater than the effect in adults, but the difference between age groups was not significant.Data on all-cause serious adverse events should be more fully reported in journal articles, and not combined with all severities of adverse events or limited to those events that are thought by the investigator to be drug-related
DIPG-43. CLINICAL AND MOLECULAR CHARACTERISTIC OF A NEW SUBTYPE OF DMG, H3K27-ALTERED WITH MAPK-ACTIVATING CO-DRIVER MUTATIONS
International audienceDiffuse midline gliomas (DMG) represent a big challenge in neuro-oncology. These tumors occur more frequently in children and are presently incurable. They are characterized by a K27M substitution in H3.1 or H3.3 histone tail or the overexpression of EZHIP (EZH Inhibitory Protein). These three alterations induce a global loss of trimethylation in H3K27 with a specific epigenic and transcriptomic remodeling. The additional oncogenic events and the clinical behavior are also distinct according to the driver event. Based on these differences, the H3K27-altered DMG is now classified in 4 subtypes by the latest edition of the WHO Classification of CNS tumors. Even with this new subclassification, the H3.3K27M subgroup still appears heterogenous. Recent publications reported that rare patients presenting a co-occurrence of H3.3K27M with BRAF or FGFR1 alterations tend to have a better prognosis. To better study the role of these co-driver alterations that activate the mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling, we assembled a large pediatric and adult cohort of H3K27-altered DMG comprising 25 new DMG patients mutated in FGFR1 or BRAFV600E and 37 previous cases from the literature. We performed a comprehensive histological, radiological, genomic, transcriptomic and DNA methylome analysis on this extended cohort. Interestingly, the results show clear differences with other DMG subtypes, including: specific DNA methylation profile, senescence signature, better overall survival (median around 3 years), older age at diagnosis, specific histological and radiological presentations with calcifications or more circumscribed tumors. Additionally, in specific cases, we show that the MAPK-activating mutation occurred subsequently to the histone H3K27M mutation. In conclusion, DMG, H3K27-altered harboring MAPK activating mutations represent a new subtype of DMG also frequent in adults, and deserve further attention with respect to specific therapeutic challenges
Residents’ support in major local events: Leeds Pride
This article examines the extent to which community participation and perceived impacts have an influence on residents’ support of major events, more specifically, the Leeds Pride celebration. The research examines the perspectives of 400 Leeds permanent residents. The study tests a structural equation model, which has its theoretical basis in Social Exchange Theory. It examines the constructs of community participation, perceived positive and negative impacts, and community support, including the actual participation of locals in the event. The findings reveal that the actual participation of locals to decision-making influences their perspectives on community participation. The support is influenced by views of the perceived impacts, whilst community participation has no direct influence. Conversely, the community involvement in decision-making considerably influences the perceived benefits and costs of the event, acting as a moderator, while the willingness of support is connected with the community’s participation. Finally, the article discusses theoretical and managerial aspects for major event planning and development
