Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Get PDFQuesta tesi di dottorato analizza il genere della monografia accademica di ambito umanistico, e in particolare la sua declinazione digitale, proponendo una nuova strategia di pubblicazione che prevede il ripensamento di forme e modelli della tradizione a stampa. Partendo dalla specificità del medium digitale e dalle implicazioni che da essa derivano, lo studio attraversa un ampio spazio di questioni legate alla testualità, all’editoria, all’impatto delle nuove tecnologie nel ciclo di creazione e fruizione dei prodotti della ricerca ecc., giungendo a ideare un modello di produzione e pubblicazione adeguato al contesto accademico ed editoriale italiano. Questo modello descrive la monografia digitale come oggetto scientifico singolo ed epistemologicamente connotato, tentando di delinearne l’impostazione, i tratti salienti, i modi di ideazione e produzione; amplia poi il focus su questioni macro-strutturali di pubblicazione delle monografie stesse tramite piattaforma digitale, in un contesto editoriale di raccolta, sistematizzazione, accesso e valutazione.This doctoral thesis analyzes the genre of the academic monograph in the humanities, and in particular its digital variation, proposing a new publication strategy that rethinks forms and models of the printed tradition. Starting from the specificity of the digital medium and its implications, the study crosses a wide range of issues related to textuality, publishing, the impact of new technologies in the cycle of creation and use of research products etc., arriving to devise a production and publication model suitable for the Italian academic and editorial context. This model describes the digital monograph as a single scientific object epistemologically connoted, attempting to outline its setting, the salient features, the ways of conception and production; then broadens the focus on macro-structural issues of publication of the monographs themselves via digital platform in an editorial context of collection, systemisation, access and evaluation
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. The monograph deals with the optical devices of nineteenth-twentieth century Italy, and how the first immersive experiences contributed to modify some historical-cultural and artistic-literary aspects of our country. Moreover, Riva argues that the analog “virtual experiences” examined represent the progenitors of today's virtual and augmented reality experiences. This contribution examines Shadow Plays as an example of a digital monograph, in which content and “container” are inseparable and equally functional to the success of the research output.Shadow Plays: virtual realities in an Analog World è la monografia digitale di Massimo Riva pubblicata da Stanford University Press nella collana dedicata ai progetti digitali. Lo studio si occupa dei dispositivi ottici dell’Italia otto-novecentesca, e di come le prime esperienze immersive abbiano contribuito a modificare alcuni aspetti storico-culturali e artistico-letterari del nostro Paese. No full textThe article examines the digitization of a part of the Piero Camporesi collection, providing a general overview of the workflow, from digital acquisition to publication in the Digital Library of the Department of Classical Philology and Italian Studies. The methodological choices underlying the entire process and some issues related to the enhancement of the digital heritage obtained are taken into account. In this framework, the focus is on the scholar’s rare and ancient books: through the exploration of the library volumes, thematic ideas and suggestions are provided, useful for further analyzes and insights. Il contributo prende in esame il lavoro di digitalizzazione di una parte del fondo Piero Camporesi, fornendo un quadro generale del flusso di lavoro, dall’acquisizione digitale alla pubblicazione sulla Digital Library del Dipartimento di Filologia Classica e Italianistica. Si dà conto delle scelte metodologiche sottostanti all’intero processo e di alcune questioni legate alla valorizzazione del patrimonio digitale ottenuto. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
