    Study of the evolution in space and time of water diffusion in a leaf through a sub-terahertz portable imaging system

    Among the non-destructive techniques capable of obtaining information on biological systems even in vivo, terahertz-based techniques are emerging due to their specificity to the water content, which can represent an important indicator of the presence of microorganisms and, in general, of the health status, particularly in plants. Nevertheless, the analysis of the extracted data (especially for images) and the exploitation of the potential of the technique for the study of the complex phenomena that occur in living tissues are still almost unexplored fields. In this work, the hydration status of leaves both in vivo and ex vivo was monitored continuously and non-destructively by acquiring videos in the sub-terahertz range through a portable imaging system. A model for describing the water flow in space and time in the midvein of a leaf is obtained which is suitable for the analysis of the data extracted from the portable sub-terahertz imaging system. These results show that terahertz-based technology can be used to study biological phenomena even in vivo; moreover, they pave the way for the introduction of a general method for the analysis of terahertz data based on surface fits in space and in time as well

    Photoinduced long-term memory effects in n-type organic perylene transistors.

    In this paper, the photoexcitation response of high mobility n-type organic field-effect transistors is analyzed. White light exposure of N,N_-dioctyl-3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic diimide _PTCDI-C8H_ transistors is demonstrated to promote the occurrence of metastable conductance states with very long retention times, similar to what has been previously reported for p-type compounds. Even in the absence of a gate-source voltage VGS, the complete recovery of the initial electrical condition can take up to 20 days. However, the initial state restoring is electrically controllable by the application of a positive VGS. These effects suggest that PTCDI-C8H is an interesting n-type material for the development of light-sensitive organic circuitry

    The development of terahertz based technology has given the opportunity for the realization of non destructive techniques capable of gaining meaningful information on delicate systems such as biological samples. Here, the health status of leaves in vivo has been monitored through a portable terahertz imaging system. The data have been extracted and analysed from the images acquired and compared with analogous results reported in the literature on similar systems. The possibilty of extracting additional information from the images regarding leaf details has also been explored

    Microphotoluminescence (μPL) measurements of bidimensional materials in a custom-made setup

    The continuously growing interest in the so called bidimensional (2D) materials has been accompanied by a parallel development of techniques specifically devoted to manipulating and measuring micro-sized objects. Here a flexible microphotoluminescence (mu PL) custommade setup has been built on purpose: every setup component has been optimized for 2D materials; an automatized system able to perform measurements in different positions of the sample and execute mapping have been made; the dependence of the mu PL intensity, peak center and other properties such as the Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM) on the position has been then extracted. The attention has been focused on WS2 and phosphorene. Optical response has been compared between Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) grown WS2 transferred on graphene and sapphire, especially focusing on the changes in the trion peak. Signatures have been found that can be attributed to photoluminescence from thick (more than five layers) phosphorene flakes

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
