Using the quantum probability ranking principle to rank interdependent documents

    No full text
A known limitation of the Probability Ranking Principle (PRP) is that it does not cater for dependence between documents. Recently, the Quantum Probability Ranking Principle (QPRP) has been proposed, which implicitly captures dependencies between documents through “quantum interference”. This paper explores whether this new ranking principle leads to improved performance for subtopic retrieval, where novelty and diversity is required. In a thorough empirical investigation, models based on the PRP, as well as other recently proposed ranking strategies for subtopic retrieval (i.e. Maximal Marginal Relevance (MMR) and Portfolio Theory(PT)), are compared against the QPRP. On the given task, it is shown that the QPRP outperforms these other ranking strategies. And unlike MMR and PT, one of the main advantages of the QPRP is that no parameter estimation/tuning is required; making the QPRP both simple and effective. This research demonstrates that the application of quantum theory to problems within information retrieval can lead to significant improvements

Abstract : Flash gas bypass cycles shows a great potential for domestic applications, not only to refrigerators but also to air conditioners and heat pumps. The advantages of the removal of the flash gas in systems with R744 and R134a are known and proved promising. However to implement this new concept of cycle is necessary to fill the gaps in knowledge about the phenomenon of phase separation and design the phase separator. This study aims to understand the phenomenon of phase separation at T geometries of small diameter and develop a methodology for design gravitational separators aiming applications in domestic refrigeration. An experimental apparatus was constructed to allow studying separators using isobutane fluid, R600a. The impact separator configuration was examined. Two separators on the shape of T letter with internal diameters of 6.35 mm and 12.7 mm were studied and analyzed under typical conditions of domestic refrigeration. It was studied the mass flow rate range from 0.5 to 3.0 kg/h and quality from 10 to 25%. The first prototype managed to separate the phases with relative efficiency up to 1.5 kg/h, higher flow rates caused excessive drag of liquid to vapor branch. The separator with an internal diameter of 12.7mm showed high separation efficiency even when subjected to non-ideal conditions, liquid level above separator inlet. The mathematical model developed for the design of separators proved to be a good guide for the design of gravity separators for domestic refrigeration. The liquid level control is a major challenge to maintain the efficiency of phase separation; it was shown that in the absence of the liquid level, the vapor goes to the fluid branch, which is not desired

Automatic construction of known-item finding test beds

    No full text
This work is an initial study on the utility of automatically generated queries for evaluating known-item retrieval and how such queries compare to real queries. The main advantage of automatically generating queries is that for any given test collection numerous queries can be produced at minimal cost. For evaluation, this has huge ramifications as state-of-the-art algorithms can be tested on different types of generated queries which mimic particular querying styles that a user may adopt. Our approach draws upon previous research in IR which has probabilistically generated simulated queries for other purposes [2, 3]
