Does board size matters? New evidence from a two-tier board system / Salim Darmadi
No full textThe objective of this study is to examine the association between board size and firm value using the setting of a developing economy that adopts a two-tier board system. Hence, the present study extends the existing literature
which heavily focuses on economies adopting unitary board structure. Employing a sample of non-financial companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), we perform regression analyses separately for the supervisory board and the management board. Using return on assets (ROA) and Tobin sQas measures of firm value, our results support the proposition that board size and firm value are positively associated. Across different models and estimation techniques, the relationship of board size to Tobin's Q is more robust than that to ROA. Our further analysis also reveals that larger board size is more likely to be employed by larger firms, which benefit from having larger boards. It is suggested that listed companies need to carefully arrange their board structure in their efforts to maximize firm value

No full textCumhuriyet Dönemi Türk edebiyatının önemli isimlerinden Salim Şengil, (1916-2005) ilk öyküsünü 1943 yılında yayımlamış, öykü başta olmak üzere tiyatro, anı ve antoloji türünde eserler vermiş çok yönlü bir şahsiyettir. Toplumcu gerçekçi çizgide eserler veren Salim Şengil, bu anlayışla ortaya koyduğu yapıtlarında estetik kaygıyı ön planda tutarak Türk edebiyatındaki yerini almayı başarmıştır. Yazarlığın yanında sanat ve edebiyat dergileri de çıkaran Şengil, bugün Türk edebiyatının tanınmış öykücülerine edebiyat dünyasının kapıları ilk açan isim olmuştur. Tüm bunlarla yetinmeyip çalışmayı düstur edinen sanatçı, yabancı dillerde yayımlar yaparak Türk kültürünü ve Türk millî değerlerini tüm dünyaya tanıtmayı hedeflemiştir. Bu çalışma, Salim Şengil'i "Hayatı, Eserleri ve Edebî Şahsiyeti" ekseninde inceleyerek Şengil'in, Türk edebiyatındaki yerini ve önemini tespit etmeyi amaçlamaktadır.An important character of Republic Period Turkish literature Salim Şengil (1916-2005) who is very versatile person, wrote his first short story in 1943, and produced many literary work as theatre, memoir and anthology and particularly short story. Salim Şengil produced works in socialist realism conception and managed to take his place in Turkish literature by prioritizing aesthetic concerns in those works. Along with authorship Şengil published art and literature magazines and became the one who paved the way for modern-day known story writers in Turkish literature. Apart from all these the author didn't confined himself from hardworking and published in foreign languages for the purpose to introduce Turkish culture and Turkish national values to whole world. No full textNo artigo, analisamos a retomada que Salim Miguel, um dos fundadores do Grupo Sul, empreendimento modernista que ganhou forma na Florianópolis de meados do século XX, faz de Mário de Andrade em três ensaios escritos na passagem da década de 1940 à de 1950. O crítico catarinense se vale do escritor paulistano para encenar as experiências que acometiam os jovens de Florianópolis em suas experimentações estéticas. No movimento, os textos deixam de se referir à obra de Mário de Andrade, e nos possibilitam compreender os meandros do modernismo florianopolitano a partir do que Salim Miguel rubrica sobre o autor de Macunaíma. In the paper, we analyzed the resumption that Salim Miguel, one of the founders of the South Group, a modernist venture happened in Florianopolis in the mid twentieth century, makes Mário de Andrade in three essays written between the 1940s and the 1950s. The literary critic of Santa Catarina uses the author to understand the experiences of the youth writers of Florianopolis in their aesthetic experiments. In the movement, the essays do not refer any more to Mario de Andrade\u27s Oeuvre, and considering what Salim asseverates about the author of Macunaíma, we can understand the intricacies of the modernism in Florianopolis

Il a publié cinq romans et deux récits: Le Chien d Ulysse (2001, Prix Goncourt du premier roman), La Kahéna (2003, Prix Tropiques), Autoportrait avec Grenade (2004), Tuez-les tous (2006), Le Silence de Mahomet (2008), Le grand frère (2010), Amours et aventures de Sindbad le Marin (2010) et Moi, Khaled Kelkal (2012), ainsi qu un recueil de nouvelles intitulé Les douze contes de minuit (2007). Dès Le Chien d Ulysse , Salim Bachi se fait le chroniqueur de son pays en racontant l histoire de l Algérie pendant la décennie noire des années 90. Dans d autres livres, il s intéresse à des événements historiques importants qui ont marqué le monde entier, comme les attentats du 11 septembre 2001. Ce sont les modalités (imaginaires, stylistiques, narratives, etc.) de cette présence de l Histoire dans l œuvre de cet auteur que nous tentons d analyser dans notre thèse.Salim Bachi, a contemporary Algerian author, is one of the most promising writers of his generation. Machine Learning-based Author Identification for Social Media Forensics
No full textSocial media have gained extreme popularity due to the explosive growth of cyberinfrastructures, mobile devices, Internet technologies, and services. However, they also provide potential anonymity, which in turn harbors hacker forums, carding shops, underground marketplace, dark websites, and so on. As a result, social media have become the playground of cyber threat actors who conduct various malicious operations such as selling stolen cards, disseminating misinformation, propagating hacking tools, spreading malware samples, planning cyberattacks, and organizing trolling campaigns. Therefore, it is urgent to study effective methods that can identify the authors behind the digital text in order to enable forensic analysis, enhance security, and reduce social media misuse. In recent years, machine learning-based author identification has become a promising solution to identify the author of text. However, it is still an underexplored research field in social media forensics. This thesis investigates machine learning-based author identification subfields, including author attribution, author verification, author clustering, and their applications to social media forensics.
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) has traditionally been used for legitimate purposes. Yet, cyber threat actors extensively abuse it to generate a wide range of illegal content and perform malicious behaviors due to its potential anonymity and popularity among hackers. Unfortunately, author identification research in IRC remains a largely underexplored area. In this thesis, we first present our automatic social media monitoring and threat detection method that can effectively collect data for author identification tasks and then present a novel author attribution framework and its application to IRC. It consists of a holistic feature extraction model and an ensemble of ensembles for multi-class classification. We then bring a novel author verification framework under the principle of one-class learning to effectively verify the authorship of IRC texts.
This research also examines author clustering for social media forensics. Most author identification studies focus on author attribution and author verification, while the author clustering research is largely ignored. Meanwhile, cyber threat actors widely make use of Twitter to create alias accounts for numerous malicious purposes, especially in trolling campaigns and misinformation propagations. Thus, developing an effective author clustering method for Twitter is urgent. In this research, we developed a novel unsupervised learning-based author clustering framework and its application to Twitter. We delivered the capability to identify the group among many Twitter aliases even without prior knowledge of the number of authors.
We address the effectiveness and demonstrate the feasibility of our author identification frameworks through diverse experiments. Our author attribution approach can achieve more than 90% attribution accuracy given hundreds of candidates in the author attribution experiments. In the author verification experiments, over 70% of author cases, our author verification approach can achieve more than 99% AUC. In the author clustering experiments given more than one hundred unlabeled text samples, our author clustering approach attains an average accuracy of 81.93% when knowing the number of authors and an average accuracy of 74.78% without prior knowledge of the number of authors

Available at https://doi.org/10.1177/1440783312440755The academic literature on the use of television shows in sociology education has successfully highlighted the value of the practice, but has not afforded any examples from seminar teaching. This article contributes to the discussion by demonstrating how The Simpsons, an American animated television sitcom, assists in teaching sociology seminars. The article suggests that using The Simpsons in group-based, participatory teaching and the learning environments of seminars helps students to understand sociological theories and develop their sociological imagination. It shows the application of the cartoon series to seminars of a Sociology of Belonging module and tests the value of the practice by drawing on responses to student satisfaction surveys and in-class observations. The results illustrate that the cartoon helps to highlight sociological theories and improve students’ sociological imagination. The research concludes that the sociology curriculum would benefit from developing particular ways of using The Simpsons according to course content.Peer reviewe

pesantren. Same with KH. Yusuf Salim Faqih, who has a role in the Baitul Arqom Al�Islami boarding school, is the background of this research. The discussion of this research
includes the biography of KH. Yusuf Salim Faqih during his lifetime, the role of KH. Yusuf
Salim Faqih in the development of Islamic boarding schools with the establishment of the
Arabic Language Institute, and the development of education at the Baitul Arqom Al�Islami Islamic boarding school from 1982 to 2009. The purpose of this research is to
determine the role of KH. Yusuf Salim Faqih in the development of the Baitul Arqom Al�Islami boarding school. The method in this study is the historical method, which has four
stages, namely: heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Through
this research it is known that, first, KH. Yusuf Salim Faqih is the 4th leader at the Baitul
Arqom Al-Islami boarding school, KH. Yusuf Salim founded the Arabic Language
Institute in 1982. Second, with the establishment of the Arabic Language Institute, it
brought changes to Islamic boarding schools. Third, during its development, Islamic
boarding schools changed the curriculum at least twice, the first from 1982 to 1992 using
the 1984 curriculum. From 1992 to 2009, Islamic boarding schools replaced the
curriculum with the 1994 curriculum. During this period there were changes, classrooms
increased every year. the year, in 1986 the establishment of the high school of syari'ah
science (STIS). The conclusion that researchers can get is regarding the role played by
KH. Yuusf Salim Faqih during a change at the Baitul Arqom Al-Islami boarding school.
The recommendation given by the author is that students can research the Baitul Arqom
boarding school because there are still many things that have not been discussed and
researched
