D. Manuel I: o homem "real" e o herói "construído”
A presente dissertação, D. Manuel I ─ o homem “real” e o herói “construído”,
Sobretudo a
This dissertation, D. Manuel I — the “royal” man and the “built” hero, aims to
illustrate the role of the Crónica do Felicíssimo Rei D. Manuel and Ordenações
Manuelinas in building the historical and literary memory of this King. Therefore, this
dissertation had as a starting point the portrait of the King D. Manuel I, seen from two aspects:
on one, the construction of his image in the Crónica do Felicíssimo Rei D. Manuel, and on
the other the manner in which he projects himself as King, lord of order and law, in
Ordenações Manuelinas.
The reign of D. Manuel I, from 1495 to 1521, is one of the wealthiest periods in
portuguese history, and the most beloved king, as dubbed by Damião de Góis, was in fact the
protagonist of one of the most emblematic historical periods of the Lusitanian empire.
Especially the literary work Crónica do Felicíssimo Rei D. Manuel, requested by his son D.
Henrique, who intended to perpetuate the heroic feats of the King as an active character in
the history of Portugal, allows for na insight into the troubled life of the King, his reign and,
consequently, his Kingdom which was not limited to a portion of the Iberian Peninsula but
rather part of a vaster, worldwide empire.
If on one hand the Crónica do Felicíssimo Rei D. Manuel presents a factual
description, (albeit often embellished), of the reign of King Manuel I, the Ordenações
Manuelinas transport us to the hard reality of the kingdom and to the way the sovereign
fulfills his duties as a legislator. Hence, from the Chronicle of Damião de Góis and the
Ordenações Manuelinas, we strive to observe the construction of the image of the monarchhero by the chronicler, in opposition to the monarch-man that the Ordenações shape, and the
image of the sovereign that both works present, converging or diverging, perpetuating in
subsequent history and literature
D. Manuel, a Índia e o Brasil
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
