Predictors of mathematics in primary school: Magnitude comparison, verbal and spatial working memory measures

    No full text
We determined the relative importance of the so-called approximate number system (ANS), symbolic number comparison (SNC) and verbal and spatial short-term and working memory (WM) capacity for mathematics achievement in 1,254 Grade 2, 4 and 6 children. The large sample size assured high power and low false report probability and allowed us to determine effect sizes precisely. We used reading decoding as a control outcome measure to test whether findings were specific to mathematics. Bayesian analysis allowed us to provide support for both null and alternative hypotheses. We found very weak zero-order correlations between ANS measures and math achievement. These correlations were not specific to mathematics, became non-significant once intelligence was considered and ANS measures were not selected as predictors of math by regression models. In contrast, overall SNC accuracy and spatial WM measures were reliable and mostly specific predictors of math achievement. Verbal short-term and WM and SNC reaction time were predictors of both reading and math achievement. We conclude that ANS tasks are not suitable as measures of math development in school-age populations. In contrast, all other cognitive functions we studied are promising markers of mathematics development

This report provides the necessary sizing for the LN{sub 2} cooling coils in the D-Zero cryostats. Natural convection from finned tubes will be the means of cooling the cryostats and their contents until such time as liquid can be made by condensing. Each cryostat will contain three separate cooling runs. Two runs will be cooldown and the other steady state. These runs will be placed in each cryostat as shown in figure 3, 4a and 4b. By assuming a 100 K tube wall temperature, tube diameter (3/4-inch) and wall thickness (0.065-inch) and the total length of tube (2 x 2940-inch + 1463-inch), the heat transfer can be calculated. Table 1 was calculated from relations in 'Handbook of Heat transfer Fundamentals' for free convection, pages 6-34 through 6-40

No evidence for a core deficit in developmental dyscalculia or mathematical learning disabilities

Background: Two hypotheses were tested regarding the characteristics of children with mathematical learning disabilities (MLD): (a) that children with MLD would have a ‘core deficit’ in basic number processing skills; and (b) that children with MLD would be at the end of a developmental continuum and have impairments in many cognitive skills. Methods: From a large sample (N = 1,303) of typically developing children, we selected a group definable as having MLD. The children were given measures of basic number processing and domain-general constructs. Differences between the observed sample and a simulated population were estimated using Cohen’s d and Bayes factors. Receiver operating characteristic curves were plotted, and the area under the curve was computed to ascertain the diagnostic power of measures. Results: Results suggest that the differences between the MLD and control group can be defined along with general characteristics of the population rather than assuming single or multiple ‘core deficits’. None of the measures of interest exceeded the diagnostic power that could be derived via simulation from the dimensional characteristics of the general population. Conclusions: There is no evidence for core deficit(s) in MLD. We suggest that future research should focus on representative samples of typical populations and on carefully tested clinical samples confirming to the criteria of international diagnostic manuals. Clinical diagnoses require that MLD is persistent and resistant to intervention, so studies would deliver results less exposed to measurement fluctuations. Uniform diagnostic criteria would also allow for the easy cross-study comparison of samples overcoming a serious limitation of the current literature

Writing as improvisation of memory: Por los tiempos de Clemente Colling, by Felisberto Hernández

The study is primarily conducted from the perspective of musical improvisation as a process of writing and memory construction. Through a theoretical and critical approach – including comparisons with the work of Marcel Proust – the research examines how the text employs elements such as temporal fragmentation, involuntary memory, and the interplay between vision, blindness, and hearing to construct a singular narrative that, despite its fragmented nature, is neither random nor precarious. The study also explores the structural aspects of the novel, demonstrating how this flow of memories, combined with elements such as its unorthodox syntax and the pervasive atmosphere of mystery, shapes the textual fabric. Furthermore, the dissertation highlights the relationship between the author, his contemporaries, and the avant-garde, analyzing how he reconfigures concepts such as collage and displacement. Finally, it discusses the translation of the novel as a practice of improvisation and performanc

Investigating partial least squares discriminant analysis and hierarchical modelling of short wave infrared hyperspectral imaging data to distinguish production area and quality of rooibos (Aspalathus linearis)

Short wave infrared hyperspectral imaging was tested for its ability to distinguish rooibos tea (Aspalathus linearis) based on production area and quality grade, with the aim to replace time-consuming sensory analysis in the industry. The number of latent variables and model parameters of the calibration model were optimised by cross-validation. Classification error rates were used to evaluate the performance of the models in classifying rooibos based on production area and quality grade. The production area of rooibos was distinguished by applying a partial least square-discriminant analysis model with second derivative pre-processing, followed by mean centering and inclusion of nine LVs. The model could successfully distinguish between the two production areas and had a classification accuracy of 100% for the prediction set. To distinguish between different quality grades, a hierarchical model with second derivative pre-processing was developed. Grade A could be distinguished successfully from grades B, C and D (class BCD) with 100% accuracy and grade D could be distinguished from grades B and C (class BC) with 96% accuracy. However, the model was less accurate to distinguish between grade B and C samples, with prediction accuracies of 82 and 66% for B and C, respectively. Application of near infrared hyperspectral imaging therefore offers the potential to replace the use of sensory analysis in the rooibos tea industry to predict production area and quality grade of this herbal tea

Goodness-of-fit tests in semiparametric transformation models using the integrated regression function

    No full text
Consider the following semiparametric transformation model Λθ (Y) = m(X) + ε, where X is a d-dimensional covariate, Y is a univariate dependent variable and ε is an error term with zero mean and which is independent of X. We assume that m is an unknown regression function and that {Λθ : θ ∈ Θ} is a parametric family of strictly increasing functions. We use a profile likelihood estimator for the parameter θ and a local polynomial estimator for m. Our goal is to develop a new test for the parametric form of the regression functionm, which has power against local directional alternatives that converge to the null model at parametric rate, and to compare its performance to that of the test proposed by Colling and Van Keilegom (2016). The idea of the new test is to compare the integrated regression function estimated in a semiparametric way to the integrated regression function estimated under the null hypothesis. We consider two different test statistics, a Kolmogorov–Smirnov and a Cramér–von Mises type statistic, and establish the limiting distributions of these two test statistics under the null hypothesis and under a local alternative. We use a bootstrap procedure to approximate the critical values of the test statistics under the null hypothesis. Finally, a simulation study is carried out to illustrate the performance of our testing procedure, to compare this new test to the previous one and to see under which model conditions which test behaves the best. We also apply both methods on a real data set

This work presents the study of two step-down rectifiers, a single-phase and its three-phase version, in addition to develop the design and implementation of the three-phase rectifier proposed by Colling and Barbi. The main characteristics of these rectifiers are: to use of conventional switching cells, to allow the bidirectional energy transfer, through the inversion of the reference signal, to obtain an output voltage lower, equal or larger than the peak value of the input voltage and to achieve a reduction of input current THD and a high power factor. The converters are analyzed as a connection of independent subconverters, controlled by sliding mode with decentralized switching scheme. This control, allows to obtain a robust system and a straightforward implementation. Initially a revision of the proposed topologies that operate with differential load connected is done in the research of the Power Electronics Institute of the UFSC. Subsequently, mathematical analyses are shown, resulted from numerical simulations of the different proposed rectifiers and the experimental results of the rectifiers tests, for both, single-phase and three-phase versions implemented in this work
