Development of hollow-core photonic bandgap fibres free of surface modes

Conventional optical fibres can only guide light in a high refractive index core by total internal reflection. By using total internal reflections it is not possible to guide light in an air core. Light guidance in air is of great interest for various technological and scientific applications and has only recently been possible with the advent of photonic band gap fibres. However, the transmission performance of silica/air hollow-core photonic bandgap fibres has until now been affected by the existence of surface modes. These surface modes couple with the air-guided mode in specific spectral ranges inside the bandgap simultaneously increasing the attenuation and dispersion of the air-guided mode and reducing the useable bandwidth of the fibre. Therefore, for many applications it is important to eliminate surface modes or at least reduce their impact on the air mode. The fabrication of the first hollow-core photonic bandgap fibre with no surface modes is presented in this thesis. The fibre has state-of-the-art attenuation over the full spectral width of the bandgap. As a result of the elimination of surface modes the fibre presents increased bandwidth, reduced dispersion and dispersion slope compared to previous hollow-core photonic bandgap fibers. These advances have been possible due to the development of a modified fabrication method which makes the production of low-loss hollow-core fibers both simpler and 5 to 6 times quicker than previously. This development makes hollow-core fibres with improved performance more readily available than ever before

In that brief beginning of XXI century, the mass movement returned inseveral Latin American countries, however, this popular movement isorphan of a theory that can give the basis for the major changes in favorof the majority, so this study intended to be a small brick in theorizingabout the changes that are occurring in an important player in LatinAmerica, the Republic of Ecuador. Aiming to fulfill this role, it workswith the following analytical problem: "How internal, external and regionalchanges, since 2007 (compared to the previous period, from 1980to 2007) affected the degree of autonomy of foreign policy country??Analytical problem was formulated thereby because it was observed thatinternational insertion chanced from 2007 to a differentiated andgrounded in discourse privileging at least theoretically, autonomy regardingdecision making and execution of foreign policy. The approachintroduced here aims to focus on relationships, processes and internationaleconomic structures and at the same time, address the relationshipbetween the classes within the Ecuadorian state, and the Ecuadorianstate relations with central countries and intergovernmental and multilateralorganizations. Propose analyzing autonomy in general terms andautonomy in foreign policy is something of extreme importance for theLatin American reality. Studying Ecuador's foreign policy is evidencedby comparing two time periods, namely 1980-2007 (the "long neoliberalnight") and 2007-2013 (the transformations with the coming to power ofRafael Correa). Initially we drill down into the theoretical and methodologicalperspectives that will guide the work on autonomy in foreignpolicy of the government of Rafael Correa and then investigate the systemicrelationships that characterize autonomy in foreign policy of thegovernment of Rafael Correa, in its economic and political demonstrations, and other, and finally look at how it produces the combinations ofeconomic relations and political relations in the context of the state apparatus. It is concluded that the changes of foreign policy must increasinglyface the challenges that appear of the combination of the processof inner transformation with the turbulence of the global market, withchanges in technological level and the complexity toward a socialistprogram processing

The medieval ‘scientia' of structures: the rules of Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón

Medieval builders didn't have a scientific structural theory, however gothic cathedrals were not build without a theory. Gothic masters had a ‘scientia', a body of knowledge which permitted the safe design of their buildings. The nature of this theory has not only a historical or erudite interest; perhaps something could be learned from the true masters of masonry architecture. Literary sources from the gothic period are scarce; in almost all we find structural rules to design the principal structural elements: walls, vaults (ribs and keystones) and, above all, buttresses. These rules (arithmetical or geometrical) conduced in most cases to a certain proportions independently of size, to geometrically similar designs (for example, the depth of a buttress is a fraction of the span). Very rarely, and this is the case with Rodrigo Gil, appeared arithmetical rules which lead to non-proportional designs (following Rodrigo's rule the buttresses become more slender in relation to the span as the size increases). These rules were a means to register stable forms. Proportional rules are, as has pointed Professor Heyman, essentially correct. It is a problem of stability and not of strength. Non-proportional rules express a finer adjustment to some non-proportional design problems: buttress design for the thin domical cross vaults (bóvedas baídas), boss design for the vaults themselves, and wall design for towers. The rules were deduced empirically, give correct dimensions, but above all draw our attention to some significant facts of design which so far have remained unnoticed
