    Herramientas para la gestión de los bosques mixtos e irregulares del Estado de Durango, México

    La Sierra Madre Occidental (SMO) es una región de gran interés ecológico debido a su alta heterogeneidad ambiental atribuida a su elevada diversidad fisiográfica y climática. Dentro de esta región se ubica el estado de Durango (71.5% de su superficie), que está considerado como la más importante reserva nacional forestal, generando entre el 25 y 30% de la producción maderable, con un total de 1.5 millones de m3 de madera en rollo anuales, además de ser una fuente importante de servicios ambientales. El manejo forestal en la región se ha enfocado en las últimas tres décadas hacia rodales irregulares para el aprovechamiento de las especies maderables de alto valor comercial, principalmente del genero Pinus. El manejo de estos bosques requiere de herramientas cuantitativas confiables para predecir los niveles de crecimiento y rendimiento maderable, controlar la densidad del rodal y programar los aclareos, estimar las clases de productos a obtener, y optimizar el turno comercial. Para llevar a cabo lo anterior se requiere de información confiable del ecosistema para una estimación precisa que permita, además, calcular parámetros ambientales como la captura de carbono y tener en cuenta factores como el efecto invernadero, mediante la modelización del cambio climático. En el presente trabajo se desarrollaron diversas herramientas de gestión para los bosques mixtos e irregulares de Durango. En primer lugar se desarrollaron unos Diagramas para el Manejo de la Densidad del rodal (DMD), que representan una herramienta de gran utilidad, ya que ante la falta de modelos dinámicos, permiten simular distintas alternativas de gestión en este tipo de masas a lo largo del turno. También se caracterizaron y modelizaron las distribuciones diamétricas del rodal, con la función de densidad de probabilidad (FPD) Weibull, usando los procedimientos de recuperación y predicción de parámetros. Además, se han ajustado relaciones altura-diámetro generalizadas utilizando la técnica de los modelos mixtos. Finalmente, se construyó un modelo de árbol individual para describir su crecimiento para las especies del genero Pinus, también utilizando los modelos mixtos con información procedente de los cilindros de crecimiento de los inventarios temporales convencionales. La información utilizada proviene de dos fuentes: (i) parcelas temporales de muestreo de los recursos forestales maderables, a partir de las cuales se construyeron los DMD y el modelo de crecimiento en diámetro; y, (ii) parcelas permanentes de investigación silvícola, que fueron utilizadas para describir las relaciones altura-diámetro y modelizar las estructuras diamétricas del rodal. Los DMD se construyeron, por un lado, para las especies de coníferas y latifoliadas en dos condiciones de productividad; adicionalmente se construyeron otros dos DMD que incluyen todas las especies presentes en el rodal (coníferas + latifoliadas) para cada nivel de productividad y, finalmente, un último DMD fue elaborado como la suma de los dos niveles de productividad para todas las especies presentes en el rodal. En la modelización de los parámetros de la FDP Weibull estimados por el método de momentos se asumió que el parámetro de localización () corresponde con el diámetro mínimo inventariable de la distribución, en tanto que el parámetro de escala ( ) fue modelizado usando el procedimiento de predicción de parámetros (PPM) a través de un modelo de regresión lineal simple que lo relaciona con el diámetro medio cuadrático y con la altura dominante del rodal y, finalmente, el parámetro de forma () fue recuperado indirectamente por el método de momentos a través de la predicción del diámetro medio del rodal. Con este procedimiento se logró que el 70.5% de las parcelas superaran el test de bondad del ajuste de Kolmogorov-Smirnov para el grupo de especies de coníferas y el 68.2% de las parcelas para el grupo de especies de latifoliadas. Al modelizar la relación altura-diámetro, la expresión generalizada del modelo base de Bertalanffy-Richards presentó los mejores estadísticos de ajuste para predecir la altura total de las especies estudiadas de todas las ecuaciones evaluadas. Por último, en la construcción del modelo mixto de crecimiento en diámetro se incluyeron covariables que actúan al nivel de árbol y rodal para explicar la variabilidad observada. En la calibración del modelo los mejores resultados se lograron con la información del crecimiento radial de los últimos 10 años de los dos árboles de diámetro normal más cercano a los cuartiles 50 y 75 de la distribución diamétrica del rodal

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
