Describing typeforms: a designer's response
Get PDFThe paper sets out an overview of a pragmatic research investigation initiated within a doctoral enquiry, and which continues to inform design practice and pedagogy. Located within the fields of typography and information design, and very much concerned with design history, enquiry emphasized exploration of alternative design research methodologies in the production of a design outcome loaded with pedagogical ambition.
The issue being addressed within the investigation was the limited scope of existing typeface classificatory systems to adequately describe the diversity of forms represented within current type design practice and thus, recent acquisitions to an established teaching collection in London.
Addressing this issue unexpectedly came to utilize the researcher’s own design practice as a methodology for managing emergent enquiry, and for organizing and generating new knowledge through the employment of visual information management methods.
A primary outcome of the enquiry was a new framework for the description of typeforms. This new framework will be described in terms of its operation, divergence from existing models and potential for application
Multi-component approach to understanding modern sedimentation in the North Basin of Lake Turkana, Kenya
No full textThe North Basin of Lake Turkana is a detritally-dominated, highly variable depositional environment that receives contributions from the perennial Omo River as well as ephemeral streams such as the Ileret and Tulu Bor Rivers. Only through understanding of the behaviors and impacts of these two distinct fluvial styles can modern sedimentation in the North Basin be realistically characterized. Four short cores from the Ileret and Tulu Bor deltas were compared with bulk fluvial channel sand samples from each system to study differences in sediment mineralogy indicative of source lithology. These data were used to document how ephemeral, flashy-discharge flooding events are preserved in the sedimentary record of Lake Turkana. Processes such as sublacustrine wave reworking and in channel eolian reworking were examined in detail to gain more insight into how post-depositional processes alter the sedimentary record. The short cores are interpreted to represent one flooding event, with detrital clays settling out of suspension for the majority of the year when these rivers are not flowing. This study showed that ephemeral rivers make significant, localized contributions to the basin and as much as 51 cm of sediment can be deposited during one flooding event. The localized nature of these depocenters makes lake-wide correlations difficult across Lake Turkana. However, by being able to identify and distinguish between localized deposition and larger, basin-wide processes like Omo River flood plumes, it may one day be possible to link records from the North and South Basins of Lake Turkana. By connecting modern sedimentation to documented fluvial discharge events and climate fluctuation producing lake level rises and falls, palaeosedimentary records from the Holocene can be deciphered, giving valuable information about the history of Lake Turkana and the ecosystems that depend upon it.M. Gender and the politics of the gaze in Bronte's Wuthering Heights

O parâmetro teórico desta análise, o conceito do olhar masculino, é teorizado por Laura Mulvey no artigo "Prazer Visual e Cinema Narrativo" (1975) o qual critica a relação entre o olhar masculino e a imagem feminina do prazer visual moldado pela sociedade patriarcal. Através da crítica de Mulvey do prazer visual generizado em filmes, que pertence ao contexto do cinema clássico de Hollywood, articulo sua teoria em relação ao romance Wuthering Heights de Emily Brontë para examinar a dinâmica do olhar masculino em relação à personagem feminina Catherine. Este estudo teve também por objetivo analisar o quanto o paradigma teórico de Mulvey produzido para cinema poderia ser aplicado especificamente em um texto literário escrito no século XIX.The objective of this thesis is to present an analysis of whether Catherine's image has been shaped by the male gaze, how she contends with the three looks of the male gaze - the look of the characters, the look of the reader, and the look of the author - and finally, how the male gaze is broken. The theoretical parameter of this analysis, the concept of the male gaze, is theorized by Laura Mulvey in the article "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" (1975) which critiques the relation between the male gaze and the female image within the patriarchal molding of visual pleasure. Borrowing Mulvey's critique of the gendering of visual pleasure in films, which pertains to the context of classical Hollywood cinema, I have articulated her theory in relation to Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights, to examine the dynamics of the male gaze regarding the female character, Catherine. This study also aimed at examing the extent to which Mulvey's theoretical paradigm produced for cinema could be articulated specifically in relation to a literary text written in the nineteenth century

Relationship between objective measures of physical activity and weather: a longitudinal study
Get PDF Background The weather may be a barrier to physical activity but objective assessment of this hypothesis is lacking. Therefore we evaluated the effect of temperature, rain or snow, and wind speed on the daily physical activity of adults. Methods This report contains data from 25 males (BMI (mean ± SD): 28.7 ± 3.83 kg/m2) and 177 females (BMI: 29.2 ± 5.92 kg/m2) enrolled in an intervention to increase physical activity. Steps/day of the participants was measured by pedometer. Weather data were obtained from Environment Canada. A total of 8,125 observations were included in a mixed linear model analysis. Results Significant weather related variables (at the 5% level) impacting steps/day included: seasonal effects related to the interaction between weekday and month; mean temperature, total rainfall, interactions between gender, BMI and total snow, interactions between maximum wind speed and BMI, and the amount of snow on the ground. The estimated magnitudes for the various effects were modest, ranging from ~1% to ~20%. Thus for an average individual taking ~10,000 steps/day, weather-dependent changes in physical activity could reach 2,000 steps/day. Conclusion We conclude that weather had modest effects on physical activity of participants in an intervention to increase their activity. It should be stressed that these effects may be different for less or more motivated people. With this in mind, we suggest that the effect of weather on physical activity in the general population needs to be objectively assessed to better understand the barrier it poses, especially as it relates to outdoor recreation or work activities.</p
Developing Core Leadership Competencies for the Library Profession
Get PDFThe development of competencies, competency lists, or competency models has become a popular way to assess the strengths, needs, and potential contributions of individuals in an organization. The success of libraries as organizations is determined by the actions of the individuals who work in those libraries; the success of those individuals in carrying out the missions of those libraries is in large measure a reflection of the type and quality of leadership. Successful library leaders demonstrate certain skills that are instrumental in the delivery of desired outcomes. We usually think of the demonstration of these skills as competencies.
Creating a list of competencies for library leaders is a key objective envisioned in the strategic plan of the Library Leadership Administration and Management Association (LLAMA). This task was assigned to five members of the 2008 class of the American Library Association’s Emerging Leaders Program. The project is a critical first step toward a list of competencies or standards that would serve at least three types of users: library educators planning curricula, aspiring library leaders hoping to advance their careers, and experienced library leaders seeking to advance the profession. This article will provide an overview of the library literature addressing competency models, describe the process used to develop the competency model for library leadership, review competency models found in the literature of other professions, and discuss the proposed core competency model for leadership in our profession

I conducted research of the wedding planning industry throughout the United States then moving to Arizona and later to the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. I discuss the importance of wedding planners, the skills they bring as well as the knowledge they must have to offer their clients.
