    No full text
The purpose of this work is to clarify the complicated tradition of the poetical work of Serafino Ciminelli of L'Aquila, known as Serafino Aquilano. In the first half of the 16th century his verse was surprisingly successful. At present we have fifty-three known 16th century volumes published between 1502, the year of the first edition, and 1568. The main cities where his verse was widely read were Rome, Venice, Bologna, Milan and Florence. There are also many poems by Serafino Aquilano in miscellaneous manuscripts from the end of the 15th and early 16th centuries. He is the leader of the court poetry school, rightly acknowledged as a master of this genre, so much appreciated in the second half of the 15th century. His fame was such that he was credited with the authorship of many works which were not in fact his: this exaggeration in attributing poems to Serafino Aquilano is therefore the greatest obstacle to overcome when one wishes to approach the tradition of the works of this poet. Work on this thesis involved a full recensio of the printed volumes and manuscripts containing his sonnets and octaves. Sixty manuscripts and fifty-three 16th century books were found containing his works. A description and the incipit of each poem (with reference to the sheets or pages on which they appear) have been provided. The most important manuscripts are kept in the Vatican Apostolic Library, the Florence National Central Library, the Florence Riccardiana Library, the Paris National Library and the Modena Estense Library, but also in the Parma Palatine Library, the Mantua City Library and the Pesaro Oliveriana Library. All the documents were seen directly in the libraries concerned, and consultation of microfilms was resorted to only in very few cases. The main chapter of the thesis deals with study of tradition. The research which has been carried out up to now allows it to be stated that no autograph evidence, nor any evidence indicating the existence of autograph versions of Serafino Aquilano's verse, has come down to our own time, nor is there any manuscript collection which appears to have been compiled either by the author or even under his direct supervision. The works are mostly contained in miscellanies from the end of the 15th and the first half of the 16th centuries, and none of these anthologies includes all his poems: in other words, there is no collection which gathers together all the poems attributed to Serafino Aquilano by all sources. His texts, therefore, are mingled with works by other writers, are rarely accompanied by an attribution, and even when there is one it is not always reliable. The 16th century volumes published in the first half of the century play a primary role in the tradition of Serafino Aquilano's verse. The first edition which came out in Rome in 1502 appears to be reliably attributed to him, but the same cannot be said of the subsequent reprints, which add to the corpus of the first edition but include works wrongly ascribed to Serafino Aquilano. After concluding the study of the manuscripts and printed volumes, 112 sonnets and 250 octaves were attributed with certainty to the poet. The last part of the thesis contains a critical appreciation of the 112 sonnets. Each work is accompanied by a negative type criticism which records all the adiaphorous lessons, the lectiones singolares and the phono-morphological variations in the 15th and 16th century manuscripts and printed volumes

Type A botulinum toxin treatment for chronic anal fissure

    No full text
We read with great interest the systematic review on efficacy and safety of botulinum toxin treatment in patients with anal fissure by E. Yiannakopoulou. The manuscript is well written, complete and exhaustive. The review of the literature data is careful and rigorous. This systematic review aimed to answer several primary questions. The intention to give an answer to all these questions makes the paper even more interesting. We agree with the author that botulinum toxin consists of an alternative effective therapeutic modality for the treatment of anal fissure

Stalking of psychiatrists: Psychopathological characteristics and gender differences in an Italian sample

    No full text
Research has indicated that medical doctors and paramedics are at higher risk of being stalked than the general population. In particular, mental health care professionals alone represent one third of the victims of harassment. Because of the lack of studies in this specific sector, especially in Italy, in this study, we examined the stalking of psychiatrists by their patients, considering gender differences and the incidence of stalking in private practice and public mental health clinics in Rome. We found that the rate of stalking in private mental health settings is higher than that in public settings and that the perpetrators of stalking are mainly women who mostly target mental health professionals working in private practice. Implications of the findings are noted and discussed. © The Author(s) 2012

The cause of the pestilence in florence according to Serafino Razzi : notes on the manuscript "Life and death of Girolamo Savonarola"

    No full text
The death sentence of Girolamo Savonarola, accused of heresy and schismatic intentions, was carried out in 1498, in Florence. In the following years, Italy was hit by a plague epidemic and invaded by foreign armies. His followers, called "Piagnoni," related the two events, explaining the scourges as divine punishments for the prosecution of an alleged saint. This explanation is also found in the manuscript Vita e morte di Fra Girolamo Savonarola by Serafino Razzi, one of the leading figures of the Savonarolian movement. In this article, the reader will find a note concerning the vicissitudes of the manuscript, a note concerning its author, the transcription of some significant passages of the work, including the fragment that relates the killing of Savonarola to the plague which affected Florence and other Italian cities, and finally some reflections on the historical transformations of Catholicism

Quaderni di Serafino Gubbio operatore: the mechanized world and the cinema in Pirandello

Tomando como base os textos dos principais críticos da obra de Pirandello e daqueles que trataram das mudanças da obra de arte na sociedade industrial, apresentamos considerações que demonstram a preocupação pirandelliana não só com o humano, mas também com o futuro da arte e do teatro numa sociedade alienada pelas máquinas, o que faz do autor um dos maiores pensadores do século XX.Luigi Pirandello is a remarkable and definite presence in the literature of the twenty century, as one of the mainly representative authors of the italian Decadentismo, not only as a dramaturge field in which he is wordly famous but also with his innovative and significant opus. The present work proposes to analyze the authors poetic, that destroy the 19th century prevalent way of work, and it has as theme the fragmentation of the subject, the alienation and the relativity of the modern world, a crisis of everything that is absolute. To prove this point we have analyzed one of the mainly pirandellianos romances, Quaderni di Serafino Gubbio operatore, opus that brings his serious and careful thoughts about crisis in the modern world generated by technological progress brought by industrial civilization that has had as consequence the mechanization and acceleration of the life rhythm in big metropolis. The work contains within something which we understand to be the fundamental themes of his opus: value crisis in the mechanized and modern world and the invasion of technology in the field of arts, represented by the cinema. Taking as basis the texts of Pirandellos mainly critics and the texts of those who treated the changes that had been occurred in the work of arts inside the industrial society, we present considerations that can demonstrate pirandellianas preoccupation, not only with the human being, but also with the future of art and theatre in a society that had been alienated by machines what transforms the author in one of the greatest philosopher of the twenty century

Marulić in a Preacher's Compendium by Serafino Razzi: A Contribution to the Reception of De institutione

    No full text
The Dominican Serafino Razzi is far better known in Croatia as the author of the first printed history of Dubrovnik than as a compiler of lives of saints and Dominican brothers and author of moral and religious works such as the Giardino d'essempi overo fiori delle vite de 'santi, printed in Brescia, in 1607. The mentioned work appeared as a result of Razzi’s pastoral activity. Namely, ever since Aristotle, the exemplum was considered an instrument of rhetoric argumentation. The reason lies in its suggestiveness, for using exemplum an able rhetor could teach and motivate without using theory or making deductions. Christian preachers were fully aware of the value of suggestive examples. Razzi, himself a preacher in the Florentine church of St Mark, used exemples in his sermons and collected a vast number of them over the years. Spurred by some friends, he eventually dicided to have them printed and made available for college preachers, who with the Giardino d'essempi got new handy examples to employ in their sermons on virtues and vices. The aim of course, was to increase the psychological and moral effect of sermons, as well as the number of works of practical piety. Drawing on known and unknown sources, Razzi compiled a true florilegium (» The appeal of saintly examples and that of sundry flowers are equally irresistible«). This mosaical work lacks organic structure and rests entirely upon a number of moral and ascetic themes arranged in alphabetical order (adulterio, astinenza, avaritia, bestemia ... ), incorporating unequal numbers of examples. They total 768, falling under 85 titles. Their sources are quoted either at the beginning or at the end of the texts. What makes this work interesting to us is the fact that 69 examples come from Marulić's De institutione, which puts him shoulder to shoulder with St Jerome, Pope Gregory, Bonaventura, Cassian, Luis de Granada, Bernard or Voragine. Also, stressing in the preface Marulić' s De institutione as well as its Italian translation and taking from it an impressive number of examples (1/11) and almost the whole of the chapter IV, 7-8, Razzi proves that Marulić's authority was particularly great in the time after the Council of Trent

Purpose To compare macular thickness before and after cataract surgery and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in pediatric eyes. Design Retrospective cohort study. Setting University Eye Clinic, San Giuseppe Hospital, University of Milan, Milan, Italy. Methods The study analyzed spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) images of the macula in pediatric eyes in which cataract surgery had been performed and that were examined preoperatively and 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months postoperatively. Results The mean age of the 11 patients (11 eyes) was 5.8 years ± 2.2 (SD) (range 3 to 14 years). The mean macular thickness at 1 month and 3 months was significantly higher than at baseline (273.7 ± 26.8 μm and 266.0 ± 22.8 μm, respectively, versus 244.8 ± 19.5 μm; P .05 versus baseline). Conclusions Spectral-domain OCT was useful in evaluating the macular changes in the eyes of a cohort of pediatric patients 3 years and older. Cystoid macular edema was not observed during the 12-month follow-up. Financial Disclosure No author has a financial or proprietary interest in any material or method mentioned
