V.S. Naipaul’s ?The Mystic Masseur?: A Study of Post- Colonial Myth and Reality

Abstract

The Mystic Masseur is one of the V.S. Naipaul’s finest comic creations in which we see immense sensibility, humour, success, politics and endless inventive imagination that have become the hallmarks of the author’s genius. It is Naipaul’s first novel that depicts the story of the rise of Ganesh Ramsumair, from failed primary teacher and struggling masseur to author, revered mystic and M.B.E. It is a journey memorable for its hilarious and bewildering success through politics. V.S. Naipaul has made the claim that the story of Ganesh Ramsumair is the history of their time. In each step of the career of Ganesh Ramsumair the author has satirized the rise of power of a representative of the country, called Trinidad which was about to achieve it’s independence from the British colonial rule in 1962.Beneath the muchness and manyness the author traces the romance and realism, imagination and fact of the ?rise? and ?decline? of Ganesh Ramsumair. The story of the novel is not only the life history of Ganesh Ramsumair; rather it is a story of social and economic life of the Indian islanders. The author shows his alienation and rootlessness of the people migrated from India to Trinidad. Here he puts stress on the importance of imagination for survivalThe question is whether the novel The Mystic Masseur depicts the real Trinidad, the question is answered in King’s observations in his book. ?Those familiar with Trinidadian history should recognize how Naipaul has used local events, characters and such politicians characters and such politicians as Uriah Butler, Albert Gomes, Arthur Cipriani and Naipaul’s two uncles, Rudranath and SimbhoonathCapildeo in his novel. Naipaul’s early fiction is based on memories of Trinidadian cultural and political life before he left for England in 1950.? (King 29) My paper proposes to examine how V.S. Naipaul usesthe post-colonial myth and reality in his novel The Mystic Masseu</p&gt

Regional growth and ICT in Italy: an analysis of SMEs versus large firms

    No full text
Among the (most important) reasons underlying the lack of convergence of some regions towards the national and the European Union average there has been the strong gap in technological endowment and innovation capacity. In this perspective, the requirements of the “knowledge-based economy” and the observed contribution of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to economic growth are very likely to have a significant impact upon regional growth: however, it is far from clear whether this effect will lead to greater convergence or, on the contrary, to stronger territorial polarization. From preliminary evidence, the new ICT paradigm is showing contradictory consequences, insofar as it seems to indicate more peculiar features and different transmission modalities than the ‘old’ technologies – for instance among SMEs. At the same time, the recent debate has focused on whether and to what extent such a technological shift can be viewed as “horizontal” – that is, able to propagate growth in the overall economic system, thus representing a “radical technological change” – or, rather, if it is a more limited and sector-specific type of progress. Yet, empirical evidence seems to reveal that ICT does not only show outstanding dynamics as a single industry, but also a great capacity to promote growth in other sectors, both traditional and technology-intensive; furthermore, the diffusion of the new technologies turns out to be highly spatially variable and externalities promoting the adoption of the new technology seem to be stronger at the sub-national level. Yet, the ICT spread does not affect uniformly different firms’ dimensional classes and geographical systems - which vary deeply in terms of access capacity, connection variety and absorptive attitude - possibly giving further impulse to (or helping to reduce) the gap between cores and peripheries. As in the case of the ‘old’ technologies, not all regions are expected to be on the cutting edge of the information and communication paradigm, but all need to understand and adapt to the network age, build the capacity to participate in it and take advantage of its increasing social and economic rewards. As recently argued, there is some evidence of a growing diversification of regional economic disparities, which is generating a sort of ‘patchwork’ of manifest differentials in the patterns of socio-economic development within the EU. Starting from these ongoing transformations, the aim of this paper is to look at the recent trends in labour productivity in both small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and large firms which are active in the ICT production. Ultimately, the objective is to shed some light on the role of ICT-producing industries on regional growth – and on regional gaps - in the Italian economy, traditionally characterised by geographical polarization and imbalances which are among the sharpest in the “Europe of regions”.

    Coauthor prediction for junior researchers

    No full text
Research collaboration can bring in different perspectives and generate more productive results. However, finding an appropriate collaborator can be difficult due to the lacking of sufficient information. Link prediction is a related technique for collaborator discovery; but its focus has been mostly on the core authors who have relatively more publications. We argue that junior researchers actually need more help in finding collaborators. Thus, in this paper, we focus on coauthor prediction for junior researchers. Most of the previous works on coauthor prediction considered global network feature and local network feature separately, or tried to combine local network feature and content feature. But we found a significant improvement by simply combing local network feature and global network feature. We further developed a regularization based approach to incorporate multiple features simultaneously. Experimental results demonstrated that this approach outperformed the simple linear combination of multiple features. We further showed that content features, which were proved to be useful in link prediction, can be easily integrated into our regularization approach. © 2013 Springer-Verlag

Showing the essential science structure of a scientific domain and its evolution

Category cocitation and its representation through social networks is proving to be a very adequate technique for the visualization and analysis of great scientific domains. Its combination with pathfinder networks using pruning values r=∞and q=n−1 makes manifest the essence of research in the domain represented, or what we might call the `most salient structure'. The possible loss of structural information, caused by aggressive pruning in peripheral areas of the networks, is overcome by creating heliocentric maps for each category. The depictions obtained with this procedure become tools of great usefulness in view of their capacity to reveal the evolution of a given scientific domain over time, to show differences and similarities between different domains, and to suggest possible new lines for development. This article presents the scientogram of the United States for the year 2002, identifying its essential structure. We also show the scientograms of China for the years 1990 and 2002, in order to study its particular national evolution. Finally, we try to detect patterns and tendencies in the three scientograms that would allow one to predict or flag the evolution of a scientific domain
