Automatic classification of submerged macrophytes at Lake Constance using laser bathymetry point clouds
Submerged aquatic vegetation, also referred to as submerged macrophytes, provides important habitats and serves as a significant ecological indicator for assessing the condition of water bodies and for gaining insights into the impacts of climate change. In this study, we introduce a novel approach for the classification of submerged vegetation captured with bathymetric LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) as a basis for monitoring their state and change, and we validated the results against established monitoring techniques. Employing full-waveform airborne laser scanning, which is routinely used for topographic mapping and forestry applications on dry land, we extended its application to the detection of underwater vegetation in Lake Constance. The primary focus of this research lies in the automatic classification of bathymetric 3D LiDAR point clouds using a decision-based approach, distinguishing the three vegetation classes, (i) Low Vegetation, (ii) High Vegetation, and (iii) Vegetation Canopy, based on their height and other properties like local point density. The results reveal detailed 3D representations of submerged vegetation, enabling the identification of vegetation structures and the inference of vegetation types with reference to pre-existing knowledge. While the results within the training areas demonstrate high precision and alignment with the comparison data, the findings in independent test areas exhibit certain deficiencies that are likely addressable through corrective measures in the future

Roy Wagner died in September 2018. This article, written out of affection and admiration, shows the originality of Wagner’s thought and highlights its importance for understanding, not only current anthropology, increasingly influenced by his work, but also the anthropological machine and its great invention, culture. The article examines moments of his life and his tastes, and recounts anecdotes told by him to provide a better understanding of the disciplinary and theoretical links that Wagner estab-lished with authors like Claude Lévi-Strauss, Victor Turner, Gregory Bateson and Carlos Castaneda. The article concludes with an extensive bibliography for those who want to explore further the work of an author who is set to become a defining figure in the anthropology of the near future.
Deer mandible tools: an examination of Oneota modified mandibles from La Crosse County, Wisconsin
This study focuses on the modified deer mandibles that have been recovered at late prehistoric Oneota sites over the last few decades by the M.V.A.C. in La Crosse County, Wisconsin. The purpose of this study is to clarify through experimentation the function of Oneota tools made from deer mandibles.
Of the numerous deer mandibles and deer mandible fragments that have been recovered from Oneota context in the La Crosse locality there are a set of five deer mandibles, which show signs of heavy wear along the fracture of the bone marrow cavity where they were broken, presumably to obtain the marrow. These artifacts were found at the Pammel Creek site (47Lc61), the Valley View site (47Lc34), and the Gundersen Lutheran site (47Lc394), and the Sand Lake site (47Lc44). Experimental use demonstrated that the Oneota mandibles were identified as hide scrapers, which were used to soften leather for hide working
Hermann Wagner and the Illustrated German Flora. There are two authors of botanical publications with the name Hermann Wagner both born in 1824, one in Hadamar (Hesse), the other in Weißenfels (Saxony-Anhalt). For a long time it has been questionable who wrote the Illustrierte deutsche Flora (Illustrated German Flora) with the first edition 1869–1871. Evidence has been found that the author of this work was Hermann Wagner of Weißenfels who was a prolific writer especially of Natural History books for young people. In recent times even a third author, the geographer Hermann Wagner (1840–1929), has been claimed as author for the Flora. This is certainly a mistake
Dom Pedro II e Wagner
ABSTRACT
Dom Pedro II and Wagner. v. 19, n. 2, p. 215-232, jul./dez. 1991
Based on the autobiography of Wagner and the correspondence of Dom Pedro, the author evokes the great admiration that the Brazilian Emperor had for the German composer, including his having contributed financially to the construction of the Bayreuth which is dedicated exclusively to Wagner´s music, and having attended its inauguration in the company of the German Emperor. The author describes how Dom Pedro contributed indirectly to the thematic choice of the opera Tristão e Isolda, and led the composer to begin to write this work whose première was planned for Rio de Janeiro and dedicated to the Brazilian Emperor. The author comments on the motives which led Wagner to undertake such a project and analyses the errors caused by the precarious conditions of communication at the time, as well as the factors that impeded Wagner´s visit to Brazil.
