Incorrect factual beliefs and political polarization
This analysis explores the correlation between incorrect factual beliefs about politics and political participation and polarization. Drawing on data from the German social survey (ALLBUS), we perform a cross-sectional analysis at individual level for the 2008, when fake news was not widespread yet. Results show that having incorrect knowledge of the state of the world positively correlates with low political participation and with the intention to vote for right-wing parties. We argue that individuals are not mislead by fake news because they lack of correct factual knowledge, but the consumption of fake news may be rather conditional upon political polarization
Three essays on the economic perspectives of false information
This thesis covers the debate about the political outcomes of false information online. The dissertation is composed of three articles. The first article sets the theoretical basis for the empirical analysis and proposes a cross-disciplinary classification of studies in the field. I identify five main groups of studies: the first group collects studies examining the spreading patterns of false information online; the second investigates the cognitive mechanisms underlying individuals’ information processing, which may lead to biased beliefs; the third covers analyses testing the efficacy of debunking in adjusting incorrect beliefs; the fourth encompasses studies aiming to identify successful automatic detection algorithms for false information; the last includes studies exploring the political outcomes of false information. The second article investigates how false information relates to the performances of the main parties across Italian provinces in the context of the 2018 political elections. I draw on geotagged Twitter data to build a measure of exposure to misleading contents and then match this information with other province-level data. Results suggest that false information played a role in the Italian political debate. I find that the index is positively and significantly associated with the performance of the Five Star Movement and negatively associated with the performance of the Democratic Party when the analysis is restricted to political disinformation or a subsample of pro-disinformation tweets. The third article investigates the impact of false information online on the 2019 European election in Italy. The first part of the paper carries out a cross-sectional analysis exploring how the exposure to false information on Twitter relates to the electoral outcomes. Results show a positive relationship with the performances of the Five Star Movement and the Democratic Party. In the second part of the paper, a First Difference analysis is performed exploiting data collected in the occasion of the 2018 political election, which confirms the association found for the Five Star Movement but not for the Democratic Party. I conclude arguing that these results are suggestive of the presence of online polarization and consistent with this literature

Vita, unità e ricerca dell'Illuminismo: Grundtvig e la costituzione danese
Few persons are as intimately and often connected to Danish democratic and national development than the Lutheran minister, poet, debater, historian and politician Nicolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig (1783-1872). He is typically celebrated for his radical ideas of freedom and thereby also connected to Danish constitutional development. In this article, the author analyses Grundtvig’s historical presentations and political publications and speeches in order to make a coherent picture of Grundtvig as a constitutional thinker focusing on his principal and historically founded views on constitution and the role of king, parliament and freedom in this regard. The author concludes that Grundtvig saw a legislative assembly as a threat to national unity and popular freedoms rather than a bulwark of it. Grundtvig’s own proposal for a parliament oddly enough divided the assembly in two in order to demonstrate that there was no conflict of interest within the people. His view on freedom distinguished between fundamental liberties and liberties, which had enlightenment at its goal – principally the freedom of the press. The latter could be limited to a certain group, since not all utterings were beneficial for enlightenment. The former, to which Grundtvig included freedom of religion and freedom of trade, should not be limited. Grundtvig’s claim to be part of Danish democratization has to some degree been based on his approach that already granted suffrage could not afterwards be pruned. This, however, was to Grundtvig a matter of national stability, and hin- drance of insurrection, not principal support of a broad suffrage.
This paper aims to investigate the figure of the young hero in the epic poems Teseide and Peregrinaggio di Rinaldo. Their author, the sculptor and poet Danese Cataneo (1508-1572), is known for L’Amor di Marfisa (1562), a poem that influenced Tasso’s poetry, as has been highlighted in many studies. The poems are transmitted in lacunose condition in manuscript Chig. I.VI.238 of the Vatican Library. They do, however, offer an interesting stimulus for reflection about the phenomenon of young epic heroes, since they present original stylistic and narrative solutions in the construction of their heroes’ childhood. In this article, the theme of the young hero in these poems is examined by addressing the birth of Theseus and his epiphanic childhood; the analogy between the education of the young hero and the education of the perfect prince and the ideal courtier; the “Bildungsroman” of the young Ruggiero (Rinaldo’s nephew), and finally the important moral purposes of the works.
