    No full text
Objectives: This single-center, randomized clinical trial evaluated and compared retainer bonding among different methods and adhesives in terms of periodontal status and failure rates.Materials and Methods: A total of 100 patients from the orthodontic department of Pamukkale University were randomly assigned to the following 4 groups: group 1, direct bonding (DB) with two-step adhesive; group 2, DB with one-step adhesive; group 3, indirect bonding (IDB) with two-step adhesive; and group 4, IDB with one-step adhesive. Eligibility criteria included good finishing results and oral hygiene, no periodontal or systemic problems, and no missing anterior teeth or restorations. Randomization was carried out using computer-generated random numbers with allocation concealment by opaque, sealed envelopes. The main outcomes were plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), and calculus index (CI) recorded at bonding, 6 months (T1), and 12 months (T2) after bonding. A secondary outcome was failure rate. The periodontal outcome assessor was blinded. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U-test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and chi-square test. Results: PI and GI increased with time in all study groups, but there were no significant differences among groups at any time point. A small amount of calculus was observed in all study groups, with the increase in CI for group 3 significantly greater at the T2-T1 time interval (P , .05). There were no significant differences between groups for 12-month failure rates. Conclusions: The one-step retainer adhesive was similar in terms of periodontal status and failure rate. Therefore, a one-step adhesive can be used during bonding, regardless of technique. (Angle Orthod. 2022;93:57-65.

    No full text
The aim of this study was to investigate the extraction of anthocyanins from the fruits of Caucasian blueberry (Vaccinium arctostaphylos L.) and examine the colour stability of anthocyanins encapsulated through spray drying in model systems. The trials were conducted to determine the optimal conditions for anthocyanin extraction using an ultrasonic water bath at temperatures of 25, 50 and 75°C. The ideal anthocyanin extraction occurred at 25°C using 100% acetone in an ultrasonic bath for 15 min at 35 kHz. Anthocyanin concentrations were evaluated using the pH differential method. The extracted anthocyanins were encapsulated through spray drying with maltodextrin as the encapsulating material. The encapsulation efficiency was 80.4 ± 0.20%, and the anthocyanin retention rate was 83.0 ± 0.76%. The coloured capsules were added to model systems with pH values of 4.50, 5.00, 5.50 and 6.00. The colour values (L* 50.16 ± 0.05, a* 4.08 ± 0.04, b* −9.35 ± 0.01, H° 293.57 ± 0.15, C* 10.20 ± 0.03) were measured during varying storage conditions. The results showed, that colour loss began on the fifth day and this was accelerated with higher temperatures and pH values. It was found that encapsulation significantly preserved the stability of the blue colour and the loss of the blue colour followed first-order reaction kinetics. The study showed that the blue colour of microcapsules was best preserved at pH 5.00 at 25°C. In this case, the measured total colour change (∆E) was 5.86, the activation energy (Ea) was 37.64 kJ/mol, and the half-life (t1/2) was determined to be 19.08 days. © 2024 The Author(s). No full text
Objective: To evaluate the role of hand-wrist radiographs (HWRs) in the assessment of growth and development based on the cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) method and to determine whether clinical experience levels would affect the decision-making process. Materials and Methods: The lateral cephalometric radiographs and HWRs of 48 patients aged 11 to 16 years were assessed in this study. The clinicians first determined the growth stage by the CVM method based on lateral cephalometric images (T1). Then, the clinicians filled out the same questionnaire with HWRs on each question (T2). Subsequently, the clinicians were divided into groups according to their experience levels. Intraclass correlation coefficients were calculated to evaluate intraobserver agreements. The data were analyzed with chi-square or Fisher-Freeman-Halton Exact tests for intergroup comparisons. Results: For all evaluators, the percentage of agreement changed minimally after T2. The most experienced clinicians demonstrated the most consistent decisions for overall CVM stages at both evaluations. Concerning each stage, the percentages of changed decisions showed no significant differences between the groups except for stages CS4 and CS5. There were significant differences between the rates of agreement for CS3 in each group from T1 to T2 (p0.05). Conclusion: The level of orthodontic experience affects the decision-making process. The presence of HWRs provided no advantage in the assessment of CVM

Objectives: To evaluate the effects of different lingual retainers on periodontal health and stability of mandibular anterior teeth at the 1-year follow-up. Materials and Methods: One hundred thirty-two patients were randomly allocated to four groups using different lingual retainers: group 1, 0.016 x 0.022-in dead-soft wire; group 2, 0.0215-in 5-strand stainless steel wire; group 3, 0.014 x 0.014-in computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing nitinol retainer (Memotain); group 4, connected bonding pads. Plaque, gingival, and calculus indexes were used to evaluate periodontal health, and Little's irregularity index, intercanine width, and arch length measurements were performed to evaluate stability. All measurements were performed at each time point (debonding and 3, 6, 9, and 12 months). Results: The mean value of the gingival index obtained in group 3 was lower than the mean value for all other groups. The mean value of the calculus index was the lowest in group 3, and there was a significant difference between group 3 and groups 1 and 2. No differences were found among the groups in terms of plaque index, intercanine width, and arch length. The least irregularity was obtained in groups 2 and 3. There were no significant differences between these groups and groups 1 and 4. Conclusions: Gingival inflammation and calculus accumulation were the lowest in group 3 (Memotain). The irregularity for Memotain and stainless steel retainers was less than or the other groups. However, no clinically significant worsening of periodontal health or relapse were seen in any groups after 1 year.Pamukkale University [2018DISF005]We would like to thank Hande Senol for her statistical support. Lisansüstü Eğitim Enstitüsü, Temel Eğitim Ana Bilim Dalı, Sınıf Eğitimi Bilim DalıBu çalışmanın amacı, ülkemizde de hızla önem kazanmaya başlayan çocuk edebiyatının önemli yazarlarından biri olan Serpil Ural'ın çocuk kitaplarını, değerler eğitimi ve bu değerlerin eserlerinde işleniş biçimi açısından incelemektir. Çalışmada, nitel araştırma yöntemi bağlamında doküman incelemesi ve içerik analizi tekniği kullanılmıştır. Bu alanda yazarın 21 çocuk kitabı incelenmiştir. Araştırmada öncelikle 2018 Türkçe Dersi Öğretim Programı'ndaki (1-8. Sınıf) kök değerler (adalet, dostluk, dürüstlük, öz denetim, sabır, saygı, sevgi, sorumluluk, vatanseverlik, yardımseverlik) ve bu kök değerlere bağlı olarak kazandırılması istenen alt değerler baz alınarak 31 değerin yer aldığı bir liste oluşturulmuştur. 21 çocuk kitabı okunarak olay örgüsü, kahramanlar, dil ve anlatım, kitabın önemi adlı başlıklarda incelemeler yapılmış ve kitabın içeriği listede yer alan değerler bakımından analiz edilmiştir. Yapılan incelemeler sonucunda elde edilen veriler not edilmiş ve tablolaştırılmıştır. August 2019, 171 page The aim of this study is to examine the children's books of Serpil Ural, one of the important authors of children's literature which are rapidly gaining importance in our country in terms of values education and the way these values are argued in her works. In the study, document analysis and content analysis techniques were used in the context of qualitative research method. In this field, the author's 21 children's books were examined. In the research, a list of 31 values has been created based on the basic values, primarily the values (justice, friendship, honesty, self-control, patience, respect, responsibility, patriotism, helpfulness) in 2018 Turkish language curriculum (1-8. Grade) and the lower values that are required to be acquired related to those basic values. The 21 children's book was read and examined in the titles of story line, characters, language and expression, importance of the book, and the content of the book was analyzed in terms of the values included in the list. The data obtained as a result of the anlaysis were noted and tabulated. For each value, a separate title is opened, and the way the values defined in the corresponding value argued in the books is sampled with quotations from the books and the results of the values are reached. As a result of the research, it was concluded that Serpil Ural's children's books can be taught at preschool and basic education level and can be used as a useful educational material in the transfer of individual and social values. The most argued values in the works were " peace" values, and the least argued values were "curiosity/research", "love science and knowledge", "letters", "diligence", "stand at your word" values. The simple, plain, comprehensible language used in the books both made it easy to read and set a good example of transferring of our mother tongue to children in the best way. The role model is presented to the children by giving them historical awareness/national consciousness and love of Homeland through exemplary personalities. The author conveyed even the battle scenes with great ingenuity, purging them of violence. It is noticed that any bad words and slang that would be a bad example to children were not used. In her works, evil characters are surely penalised and contained. In these aspects, it is concluded that the author's works can be used pedagogically as an important teaching material in the transmission of values education, especially in the basic education of children

Recent resonance results measured with the ALICE detector at the LHC

    No full text
Resonances are extremely short lived particles (τ ∼ 10-23 s). Due to their lifetime, they may decay, re-scatter and regenerate between chemical and kinetic freeze-outs. For this reason, they are very significant probes to understand the evolution of the medium and particle production mechanism in heavy ion collisions. Different than other particles, resonance properties such as mass, width and yield can be modified by the medium created in the relativistic collisions. Moreover, comparison of resonances produced in different collisions provide evidences about possible in medium effects and system size dependency of their production. ALICE (A Large Heavy Ion Experiment) is one of the detectors at the LHC specifically designed to investigate the features of the quark gluon plasma (QGP). In this proceeding, the recent ALICE resonance results in pp, p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC energies are presented. © 2017 Author(s)

Seeking Environmental Awareness in Postmodern Fictions

    No full text
The author posits that postmodern fictions can create environmental awareness, as they incorporate ecological issues in their narratives in a dialogic interaction with their textual strategies as well as disclose how the discursive constructions of nature shape and condition the human valuation and understanding of the environment. Postmodern fictions also transcend false dichotomies in a process of writing that self-consciously interrelates texts and contexts
