GENERALIZED PUNCTUAL HILBERT SCHEMES AND g-COMPLEX STRUCTURES
In this paper we define and analyze a generalization of the punctual Hilbert scheme of the plane which is associated to a simple complex Lie algebra g. Using this generalized punctual Hilbert scheme, we construct a new geometric structure on a surface, called a g-complex structure, generalizing complex structures and higher complex structures from a paper of V. Fock and the author. We investigate the geometry of the g-complex structure and define a moduli space which conjecturally is isomorphic to Hitchin's component of the character variety for the real split group G.Dans cet article on définit et analyse une généralisation du schéma de Hilbert ponctuel du plan, généralisation associée à une algèbre de Lie simple complexe g.
Étale tame vanishing cycles over
Comments are welcomeWe develop a theory of tame vanishing cycles for schemes over in the context of \'etale sheaves. We show some desired properties of this formalism, among which: a compatibility with tame vanishing cycles over a (strctly) henselian trait, a compatibility with the theory of tame vanishing cycles over , a compatibility with tensor product and with duality. In the last section, we prove that monodromy-invariant vanishing cycles, introduced by the second named author, are the homotopy fixed points with respect to a canonical continuous action of of tame vanishing cycles over
Open Court Basic Readers: Reading Is Fun.
A good example of a modern reader, with carefully chosen selections and attractive layout. Four fables are labelled as from Aesop: FG (72), TH (81), LM (90), and MSA (136). Also included are Tolstoy's The Rich Man and the Tailor (83) and the Jataka Tale, Granny and Her Elephant (124). The hare intends to nap when he lies down, sure that he would wake up in time to beat the tortoise (82). The tailor is female, and the rich man pays her precisely to stop singing; the fable is not about cares attached to riches. In the Jataka Tale, a good-natured pet elephant goes out and gets a job to help his aging owner. MSA has two unusual features: in the text, people laugh so hard at the carrying of the beast that they frighten the donkey, and in the illustration the laughing people are in the windows of buildings in town. What level is this book intended for? This is a hardbound book (hard cover)Marianne Carus, Thomas G. Anderson, and Howard R. Webbe

The resonances of the Capelli operators for small split orthosymplectic dual pairs
Let (G,G') be a reductive dual pair in Sp(W) with rank G ≤ rank G' and G' semisimple. The image of the Casimir element of the universal enveloping algebra of G' under the Weil representation ω is a Capelli operator. It is a hermitian operator acting on the smooth vectors of the representation space of ω. We compute the resonances of a natural multiple of a translation of this operator for small split orthosymplectic dual pairs. The corresponding resonance representations turn out to be GG'-modules in Howe's correspondence. We determine them explicitly
Linear independence of values of G-functions
Given any non-polynomial -function of radius of convergence , we consider the -functions for any integers and . For any fixed algebraic number such that and , and that the family contains infinitely many irrational numbers. This theorem applies in particular when is an hypergeometric series with rational parameters or a multiple polylogarithm, and it encompasses a previous result by the second author and Marcovecchio in the case of polylogarithms. The proof relies on an explicit construction of Pad\'e-type approximants. It makes use of results of Andr\'e, Chudnovsky and Katz on -operators, of a new linear independence criterion \`a la Nesterenko over number fields, of singularity analysis as well as of the saddle point method
Adapting authoritarianism: institutions and co-optation in Egypt and Syria
This PhD thesis compares Egypt and Syria’s authoritarian political systems. While the tendency in social science political research treats Egypt and Syria as similarly authoritarian, this research emphasizes differences between the two systems with special reference to institutions and co-optation. Rather than reducibly understanding Egypt and Syria as sharing similar histories, institutional arrangements, or ascribing to the oft-repeated convention that “Syria is Egypt but 10 years behind,” this thesis focuses on how events and individual histories shaped each states current institutional strengthens and weaknesses. Specifically, it explains the how varying institutional politicization or de-politicization affects each state’s capabilities for co-opting elite and non-elite individuals.
Beginning with a theoretical framework that considers the limited utility of democratization and transition theoretical approaches, the work underscores the persistence and durability of authoritarianism. Chapter two details the politicized institutional divergence between Egypt and Syria that began in the 1970s. Chapter three and four examines how institutional politicization or de-politicization affects elite and non-elite individual co-optation in Egypt and Syria. Chapter five discusses the study’s general conclusions and theoretical implications.
This thesis’s argument is that Egypt and Syria co-opt elites and non-elites differently because of the varying degrees of institutional politicization in each governance system. Rather than view one country as more politically developed than the other, this work argues that Syria’s political institutions are more politicized than their Egyptian counterparts. Syria’s political arena is, thus, described as politicized-patrimonialism. Syria’s politicized-patrimonial arena produces uneven co-optation of elites and non-elites as they are diffused through competing institutions. Conversely, the Egyptian political arena remains highly personalized as weak institutions and individuals are manipulated and molded according to the president’s ruling clique. This is referred to as personalized-patrimonialism. As a consequence, Egypt’s political establishment demonstrates more flexibility in ad hoc altering and adapting its arena depending on the emergence of crises.
This study’s theoretical implications suggest that, contrary to modernization and democratization theory’s adage that institutions lead to a political development, politicized institutions within a patrimonial order actually hinder regime adaptation because consensus is harder to achieve and maintain. It is within this context that Egypt’s de-politicized institutional framework advantages its top political elite. In this reading of Egyptian and Syrian politics, Egypt’s personalized political arena is more adaptable than Syria’s. These conclusions do not indicate that political reform is a process underway in either state
Amenability of groupoids arising from partial semigroup actions and topological higher rank graphs
We consider the amenability of groupoids equipped with a group valued cocycle with amenable kernel . We prove a general result which implies, in particular, that is amenable whenever is amenable and if there is countable set such that for all . We show that our result is applicable to groupoids arising from partial semigroup actions. We explore these actions in detail and show that these groupoids include those arising from directed graphs, higher rank graphs and even topological higher rank graphs. We believe our methods yield a nice alternative groupoid approach to these important constructions
