The author reflects on the relations between democracy and Catholicism, with special emphasis on the tensions experienced in our country. In that sense, the author believes that the relationship has been crossed by a mutual distrust. Thus, unraveling some of the nodes of this complicated relationship, says Bosca, moreover, diagnosing the etiology of this unhealthy relationship may shed some light that allows a deeper understanding of a field furrowed of misunderstandings and confusions, which more than once have become factors of tragedy. However, the author argues that the analysis of religion in its relation to politics shall be dispensed with its supernatural nature, so that it is not reduced to a purely sociological, historical or political approach

Abstract: The article studies the importance of Jacques Maritain's philosophy in shaping the humanist Christian thinking. The author draws a historical overview, starting in the 1930s in Argentina, when the influence of Catholicism in the country’s social life became consolidated. Bosca also describes how Argentine philosophers, for whom liberal democracy was a heresy threatening the authoritarian order they advocated, received Maritain's philosophy. However, history would eventually confirm the ideas of the French philosopher, during the pontificate of Pius XII, and later in Pope Paul VI's encyclicals. Ultimately, it became one of the foundations of Christian personalism in the pontificate of John Paul II, who notes the profound accordance of the Maritainian thinking with the great project of the Magisterium of the Church

Early detection and information extraction for weather-induced floods using social media streams

    No full text
Today we are using an unprecedented wealth of social media platforms to generate and share information regarding a wide class of events, which include extreme meteorological conditions and natural hazards such as floods. This paper proposes an automated set of services that start from the availability of weather forecasts, including both an event detection technique and a selective information retrieval from on-line social media. The envisioned services aim to provide qualitative feedback for meteorological models, detect the occurrence of an emergency event and extract informative content that can be used to complement the situational awareness. We implement such services and evaluate them during a recent weather induced flood. Our approach could be highly beneficial for monitoring agencies and meteorological offices, who act in the early warning phase, and also for authorities and first responders, who manage the emergency response phase

Citation: Scoglio, C. M., Bosca, C., Riad, M. H., Sahneh, F. D., Britch, S. C., Cohnstaedt, L. W., & Linthicum, K. J. (2016). Biologically Informed Individual-Based Network Model for Rift Valley Fever in the US and Evaluation of Mitigation Strategies. Plos One, 11(9), 26. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0162759Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonotic disease endemic in sub-Saharan Africa with periodic outbreaks in human and animal populations. Mosquitoes are the primary disease vectors; however, Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) can also spread by direct contact with infected tissues. The transmission cycle is complex, involving humans, livestock, and multiple species of mosquitoes. The epidemiology of RVFV in endemic areas is strongly affected by climatic conditions and environmental variables. In this research, we adapt and use a network-based modeling framework to simulate the transmission of RVFV among hypothetical cattle operations in Kansas, US. Our model considers geo-located livestock populations at the individual level while incorporating the role of mosquito populations and the environment at a coarse resolution. Extensive simulations show the flexibility of our modeling framework when applied to specific scenarios to quantitatively evaluate the efficacy of mosquito control and livestock movement regulations in reducing the extent and intensity of RVF outbreaks in the United States

The work deals with the theory and praxis of Salesian social and educational activities for children and youth. The attention is paid to common characteristics of the Salesians of Don Bosco community and its activities all over the world and in the Czech republic. The part of the work is focused on the life and work of Saint John Bosco, as the founder of Salesian congregation, and his pedagogical conception. The conception, called The Preventive System, is introduced in detail as well as its practical use in the Salesian youth centre in Prague. The author presents the work partly based on her own experience, Salesian pedagogical work observation in the oratory and interviews with educators in the youth centre. The work points out the singularity of the Salesian work for young people.Katedra věd o výchověDokončená práce s úspěšnou obhajobouDokončená práce s úspěšnou obhajobo

Art&Emotion experiment description The Art & Emotions dataset was collected in the scope of EU funded research project SPICE (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/870811) with the goal of investigating the relationship between art and emotions and collecting written data (User Generated Content) in the domain of arts in all the languages of the SPICE project (fi, en, es, he, it). The data was collected through a set of Google Forms (one for each language) and it was used in the project (along the other datasets collected by museums in the different project use cases) in order to train and test Emotion Detection Models within the project. The experiment consists of 12 artworks, chosen from a group of artworks provided by the GAM Museum of Turin (https://www.gamtorino.it/) one of the project partners. Each artwork is presented in a different section of the form; for each of the artworks, the user is asked to answer 5 open questions: 1. What do you see in this picture? Write what strikes you most in this image. 2. What does this artwork make you think about? Write the thoughts and memories that the picture evokes. 3. How does this painting make you feel? Write the feelings and emotions that the picture evokes in you 4. What title would you give to this artwork? 5. Now choose one or more emoji to associate with your feelings looking at this artwork. You can also select "other" and insert other emojis by copying them from this link: https://emojipedia.org/ For each of the artworks, the user can decide whether to skip to the next artwork, if he does not like the one in front of him or go back to the previous artworks and modify the answers. It is not mandatory to fill all the questions for a given artwork. The question about emotions is left open so as not to force the person to choose emotions from a list of tags which are the tags of a model (e.g. Plutchik), but leaving him free to express the different shades of emotions that can be felt. Before getting to the heart of the experiment, with the artworks sections, the user is asked to leave some personal information (anonymously), to help us getting an idea of the type of users who participated in the experiment. The questions are: Age (open) Gender (male, female, prefer not to say, other (open)) How would you define your relationship with art? My job is related to the art world I am passionate about the art I am a little interested in art I am not interested in art 4. Do you like going to museums or art exhibitions? I like to visit museums frequently I go occasionally to museums or art exhibitions I rarely visit museums or art exhibitions --------------------- Dataset structure: FI.csv: form data (personal data + open questions) in Finnish (UTF-8) EN.csv: form data (personal data + open questions) in English (UTF-8) ES.csv: form data (personal data + open questions) in Spanish (UTF-8) HE.csv: form data (personal data + open questions) in Hebrew (UTF-8) IT.csv: form data (personal data + open questions) in Italian (UTF-8) artworks.csv: the list of artworks including title, author, picture name (the pictures can be found in pictures.zip) and the mapping between the columns in the form data and the questions about that artwork pictures.zip: the jpeg of the artworksThe dataset was created within the scope of EU funded research project SPICE (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/870811
